Gary W Tallent is a poster child for under appreciated bass players everywhere - even among bass players. Tremendous player who came up with tremendous parts, this being one of his best. Thank you, Troy, for what I can only describe as a brutally faithful rendition.

Absolutely correct! I played two gigs with a Springsteen cover band and learned a lot of his bass parts. Virtually none were simple -- all had lots of thought put into creating them.

I became a RUSH Disciple starting in April of 1975! Cut Biology Class to go hear an album a buddy of mine said was far more important than my education and that was all I needed to hear! "Fly By Night" changed EVERYTHING for this knucklehead and pointed me on a musical path that I still walk today! I of course loved MANY other artists and Bands too...but RUSH became Family to me. I did buy and really enjoy the Born To Run Album. Bruce's music after this album I did not really follow but in the 90's Bruce's album "Tunnel Of Love" became a staple in my music play loops. And the song "Secret Garden" is a keeper in my collection. Being a huge Steely Dan, David Bowie, "Early Elton John" (from 1970 to around 1975) and a ton more, it's so easy to forget just how many great tunes from these Artists and Bands were such an influence on my musical journey! On a side note, I did have to do a Detention and get three Whacks from my Football Coach after I cut Biology to hear "Dirk, Lerxst and the Professor"...but was well worth it! LOLOL Like you Troy, there were "Some Acts" that annoyed me so naturally I refused to listen to anything they did. Years later I found how idiotic that thinking was after hearing some tunes from those very "Acts" and thinking...."Chit, this is pretty damn good" Live and learn like everyone...LOLOL Have a Safe 4th with your Bride Miss Lynn and as always I absolutely DIG IT when you make time to chat with The Fans after you Deliver The Goods Musically! Cheers From Ohio and Keep Strutting!

My introduction to Rush was the "All the World's a Stage" album. My friend got it by mistake from a record club thinking he was ordering a Mahogany Rush album. I spent many days at home learning those songs while cutting school. The reason I had to repeat the 9th grade wasn't because my grades were bad, it was because I had not attended the minimum number of days at school that was required by law. I think I'd missed 85 days. I really hated school.

Im Brazilian and Springsteen was never a huge thing here, since only 2 songs became massive hits here. Born in the USA ( cultural colonization of the Reagan era at its best) and Streets of Philadelphia. But somehow I came across this amazing song during a very depressive time in my life and it became a battle himn for me. A song that unfortunately takes a quality kind of band I never had, to be performed. You sir, are a master.

I'm not 100% sure of the part you mean. Is it over that crazy bass drum pattern, before the ascending, chromatic line? If so, I'm doing more than is actually there. I'm following along a bit more closely with the drums than the bass actually is on the isolated recording. Sometimes my ears fill in the blanks and I wish I'd listened to the isolated track before I recorded my video. Thanks!

Troy, you and I seem to be cut from the same cloth as far as our taste in music goes and how we have evolved. I too was and am a huge Rush fan (as well as UFO, Aerosmith, etc) and a lot of that had to do with not liking what everyone else was listening to. I joined a cover band twenty years ago and developed an appreciation for a lot of songs I never would have seen myself playing in my youth, Born To Run included. I love your rendition of the song and will be copying some of your parts just like I did with Closer To The Heart, which I never could have learned without your video! Thanks again for all you do, you are helping bass players the world over to improve their playing through learning songs that they never would have been able to otherwise! I'd love to see videos of your grooves on some other bass heavy songs that I never would have liked in my formative years: Midnight Train to Georgia, Silly Love Songs, and of course anything UFO! Stay well, all the best!

This song was an American classic the day it was released. 😁 Nowadays, it’s ICONIC. (Sort of like American Girl by Tom Petty.) Springsteen/E street albums are great, but the live shows are the absolute best I’ve been to. (And I’m a huge Yes/Genesis fan). Gary Tallent is a major favorite bassist of mine, melodically underpinning a BIG band with 3-4 guitars, 2 keyboardists, sax player, etc. Thanks for posting this great rendition, Love it!

Thanks for giving it a chance, Jake. I wouldn't consider myself a fan either, but I thought the bass-line was cooler than I'd ever given it credit for being. Actually, my tone is my tone and, for the most part, it doesn't change at all from song to song. Once I get my settings to where I want them I don't touch anything and record whatever song's I'm doing with the same sound. What changes is how the bass sits in with the original recording. It's hit or miss and some songs just work better than others.

Great Job. I recall getting kicked out of my high school library for enthusiastically playing along to this on an improvised drum kit while the school radio station played this. We were able to "tune in" on headphones that we got at the front desk and (if memory serves me right) and plugged in at a handful of specially wired tables. I don't know if it was low powered FM (I think it was) or if the tables had been hard wired into one of the schools PA channels. Either way It was pretty high tech. This was in '75. Long before Walkmans. Now please tell us about your featured bass. Is that a custom build? It is a beautiful looking & sounding instrument.

Wow, that library sounds like it was way ahead of its time. The bass was built by the fellow who's been working on my basses for the last 5 years, or so. His name is Joe Kruse of MBJ Guitars. I actually did play the upright for around two years in middle school. I really didn’t think anything translated from upright to electric bass, but I’ve been told, by people who know better, that a couple of good habits did cross over.

The pick up is from an old Guild bass… like the ones I often play in my videos.

I sit in as a bass player occasionally. No one can tell until a real bass player watches.

Bruce's entire catalogue is considered American classics by us younger generations, and I'm in my 30s haha. I have always thought of him as classic rock. I know Rush is progressive rock, but I still kinda lump them in with classic rock as well to be honest.

I should have known that. I consider Ruch more Classic than Progressive myself.

Not a Bruce fan but you play everything well, Troy! Check out some new collab vids on my channel with a great guitarist from Serbia. Wolfman, the Serbian Shredder! LOL

Bass part is great and at the same time I’m still hating Bruce’s voice
