PVC board has way better bonding when scuffed. Use fiberglass resin thickened with cabosil for bonding to wood/ fiberglass / carbon fiber surfaces. Use router to round edges then lightly sand with 220 to perfection. Also can be painted with epoxy when sanded with 220. I run mechanic dept. for a world class yacht builder and we went away from starboard and now just buy 4' by 8' sheets of 1/2" and 3/4" PVC board for all our mechanical/electrical mounts. PVC board is also cheaper.

It’s a great product for marine applications. Tip: Never cross-cut any material using a table saw as seen in this video. Use a miter saw or a cross cut sled with a table saw. Very dangerous cross cutting against the fence like that.

Very good advice- I learned this the hard way in my 20's trying to cut a square panel on a table saw. Ended up with a bruised rib and a little meat missing from my index finger. Luckily there was no permanent damage ans all i have to remind me of it is a 1/2" long scar on my finger and no worse for wear. lesson learned.

Notes: learn to scribe in order to match an uneven surface......It’s simple to do - every carpenter/ tiler knows how - Your Starboard pieces will match any uneven/ curved/ or intricate shape perfectly..... Finally - running a straight, razor on edge (or run the edge through a jointer - if you have one) Razor scraping the edge of the starboard BEFORE you rout will give you a perfectly machined edge.... Best

For panels & dressy areas I'm an acrylic guy. For cabinetry/structural components i use starboard & for cleats & reinforcements, mounting blocks to fiberglass etc. I use pvc board it bonds amazingly with 5200 and you can fasten (screw) your starboard to pvc. Also pvc board is available at HD & very light weight & inexpensive. You know starboard bends & is rugged but if you scribe the surface or score it well enough you can snap it clean apart. You can also router the edges, sand the texture off finishing with a 600grit & polish to a smooth shiny finish. With a gameplan, tools. determination, & creativity your possibilities are endless. Peace Y'all

The “Stern Saver” transducer mounting block is has 4 or 6 holes in the side glued to the boat to provide mechanical adhesion with a 2 part epoxy. Just fill the holes with epoxy and leave a small hump at each screw hole and push it on they have been in use for years with no issues so I think it will work ok if there's a decent texture to stick too. If you need to glue down something to make a support to screw too get a 1x2 piece of vinyl trim from HD it is also waterproof but can glued down and screwed into.

I work with this material for a living and have done this for years. HDPE is weldable with a hot air gun. My boat has many things welded with this stuff. You heat it to a temperatures where it becomes gummy/sticky before it starts getting clear. If it is so hot that it becomes clear it will NOT stick to the mating pieces.

I just recently got into boating and being a snow plower, we have a high density plastic snow plow blades that is used for interlock driveways, instead of standard steel plow blades that is going to chip the interlock brick corners. Once these blades are worn down we just set them aside. But now I found out these can be used as an alternative for starboard. They are generally at least 1/2" thick and after fully worn down, is still at least 3 inches wide.

I've been using Starboard since it came on the market, and THANK YOU for the tips! I've used it for many of the same type things you have shown. I prefer to use my router when I can, as I get a cleaner edge. (I wish it was a bit less $$$$ 'pricey')... I LOVE JB Weld for all kind of projects, and didn't know about the 'Starboard' JB Weld until seeing this. You are a virtual Walking Encyclopedia Of Great Information! (and also a big thanks to 'dpgoveride', (I'll be checking out his channel)...

Awesome and yeah, idk why it's so pricey lol you can get a full 4X8 sheet here at Home Depot for $220, but I think that's a rarity and most hardware store up north don't carry it like that lol thank you! Ha, idk about that but I try to give out what I've learned :)

The timing is great! As I have said before, I’m going to rewire my boat soon and have been getting items together for this project. Another item I will be needing crossed off the list. Not sure if pvc board will work better for this but worth checking it out. There is not a video that you guys have put out that isn’t of some kind of help. Great work 👍👍👍👍👍. Stay safe out there! And thanks 😎

PVC board works great as well, it is a lot softer though, so if it's in a "high traffic" area, where it will be getting bumped and scratched, it will scratch a lot easier. But we use both a lot, and the PVC is way cheaper as well, which is a benefit :)

Born Again Boating, great I can use pvc for the inside of the helm to mount fuse box and shelves and starboard for outside mounting. Does starboard work as a cutting board also? Would like to make a custom one for the boat? Great help!

Hey, stay awesome! Have you ever seen it used as a bow pulpit for 25 footer? thinking .75 or 1"

Yeah starboard is nice, but crazy expensive. Even ordering off of Amazon with discounted prices a 2 ft by 4 ft piece of the stuff at 3/4 in is nearly $300. Whereas an entire 4x8 sheet of wood texture PVC board is about 200. Not to mention it's easier to bond PVC because of glues that are made specifically for PVC. HDPE barely sticks to anything, and even though some epoxies will work with it, if you want to make a solid seam with a waterproof Bond you're better off with the PVC as there are specific cements that make the pieces into one piece like bonding acrylic.

A 4x8 sheet of starboard is $700. So factor THAT into your starboard project. 😅 Anyone who sells it should cut it down to the size you need, but it's still more expensive than wood. If you're worried about wood rot, then don't use softwood pine! You can build your project out of a nice hardwood, like red oak. Hardwoods don't rot. They're much more durable than softwood. Termites don't eat hardwoods. And hardwood is still cheaper than starboard. Just some food for thought.

I cut a new dash instrument panel this spring out of starboard. The old dash had etching for the toggle switch labels. I can't find new labels for my new dash at the moment and was looking for some ideas.

Try hard plastic engraved name tags from a Staples or Office supply. You can have a color background and color font. Then you can glue them on the dash panel with JB weld.

Yeah, what @Galileo Galilee said, otherwise I would say call boatoutfitters or someone like that :) You could also etch them in, but idk how good that would look :/
