I think That old outside strip of transom could be best removed with the 4 inch grinder with a chain saw blade. Yes, they do make 4 inch chainsaw blades that will work on a grinder! Wood totem pole carvers use them a lot. I think I saw one at harbor freight. My gosh be careful it could bite off a hand in a heart beat.

Grinder tip of the day, never have grinder plugged in while changing the blade. The Estwing hammer if you measure the length it should be 16 inches. Its a framing hammer you can use the length to layout your stud wall framing in a house, 16" on center. But you probably know all this.

You mention the dangers of cleaning the remaining plywood in which you use the grinder and the C7 blade. Obviously, it's an accident waiting to happen. My thinking is trying a palm router with an offset base and a spiral router bit or similar. Maybe starting with a shallow depth first run and increasing depths as needed. Should be safer to say the least.

Everglades???? just a shot keep up the good work. Quick question, On my grady White the hull ID is not the Aluminum plate like yours, How should I retain the original fiberglass stamping when I go to replace my transom in the future?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Close, it's a Sea Vee :) no worries, thank you! Sometimes you can cut around it and keep from glassing that portion. Or you can write them down and just have a plate made, it's not expensive, you can even router them into a little plate yourself! Just as long as there is a permanent fixture of the ID there so if you ever get stopped by the Coast Guard of FWC, it's there. Don't ask me how I know, but if they see a new transom they will look for it ;) and believe it or not, it is a ticket-able offense lol

I see you upgraded to the super high performance Tennis safety shoes! ;) I also like how you drag your 110v cord through standing water, that was a special moment! :) As far as the transom, I would have used a plunging router with an assortment of dado blades. You cut a clean line around the edge and the router would have had a clean and easy cut. Would have taken about 10 minutes to clean that wood out (make sure to use the carbide bits and not the cheap ones). Just my .02 EU
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 жыл бұрын
Hahah, yes, nothing but the best personal protection equipment around here lol and about the 110, it's not like it's 220 ;) lol you know you're the second person to suggest the router! You say things like "clean and easy cut" and "10 minutes" and now I'm thinking about how to be able to get every bodies suggestions before spending two hours in a fiberglass dust cloud! :) Because that probably would have been way faster!
@grumpysailor8132
@grumpysailor8132 5 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating Well, you did cut a nice straight line around the entire perimeter of the transom... I really thought you were prepping it to use a Router last week after the cut out. The router is also a good tool if you install/replace hardware screwed into a fiberglass sandwich deck. You route out the wood/balsa/GRP sandwich material and fill with epoxy/GRP and re-drill your new waterproof through deck hole. Works like sliced bread ;)

I was going to, but now I'm kind of thinking it might be best to have a removable livewell on the platform bracket and have all that open fishing room in the back!

I was going to suggest an oscillating cut off tool for the transom, but you have one and I’m sure you have tried that. Then I thought maybe a dado blade on a circular saw, but you can’t get the saw flush against the glass to cut straight down. How about using an adjustable heal bar to pound under the wood instead of a standard pry bar? Like one of these. Well, the last trim I tried the oscillating saw I thought it was going slower, but maybe I need to try it again, every body keeps suggesting it. So maybe I just had a bad blade on it and was frustrated, could be just creating more work than needs to be done lol Those pry bars might be a better fit than the standard ones, never tried that either! I'm realizing how nice it is to have all of you to give all of these great suggestions! I wish I could read the comments before doing the work and making the video lol Thank you!

Get em! Haha, thank you! Yeah, we've noticed when you get more thumbs up KZbin will push the video for longer :) We saw @Graham Stephan keep asking for thumbs up in all of his videos and his channel really took off. Obviously after a lot longer and producing a lot more videos in a different niche. But at the same time, it's worth a shot right? Figured we'd try it :) Plus, we don't have to put all of that stuff at the end of the video, just sprinkle it in the middle and that way it's not like a sales pitch at the end of the video lol Just trying new things and figuring out how to make a better video for everybody :) Just a hint on next weeks video, ;) for anybody who reads the comments lol, working on getting everything ordered for after we get the transom done so trying to figure out if a longer video like everybody wants will work when taking a bunch of measurements and figuring out how much $$Cash$$ it's going to cost to order all of the wire and pumps and stuff :) I want to try and get up to about 12 min like everyone wants, I don't think the 20 min vid train is for us, just because I don't want to just stretch stuff out and be a bore ya know! But 12 mins seems to be a good number

@@BornAgainBoating I don't have that fancy stuff with microsoft movie maker. And yeah it all works, all the ''asking'' (the public has a short attention span) but at the same time I forget about all that stuff when I'm behind the camera.....the reason after 10 years, I'm still a lost in the back of the youtube dark cloud. I said that as sarcasm, I know everything online today is a social score of likes or dislikes. and thats a real shame. youtube is great, but also under fire, big time! I watch DangarStu in Australia, he's rebuilding a steel trawler. 20 minutes is EZ, for him and still leaves stuff out. LONG isn't a bad thing, in my opinion. Way more work for your team, sounds like you have help. I have zero. I've put 8hrs into edits, uploads, etc. and still get thumbs down haters who take all this for granted. Its work, plain and simple doing one, let alone 2,3,or 4 a week.
@BornAgainBoating

@@CaptDavesSportfishing No worries man! Nothing fancy, I use Adobe Premiere it comes in Adobe CC, it costs $50 a month. You can see through all the videos that it's taken me over a year to learn how to use it! The "asking" is hard to figure out how and when to stick it all in. Lol I wouldn't say that though man, you've got over 8K subs, that's really good and yeah, it's hard to figure out all the algorithms. I watch Dangar too! lol That steel trawler is another animal though lol I know he can do the 20 minutes and even up into the 30s! Oh ha! I wish I had a team lol, I've got two gopros that I stick up around when working and then sometimes have the one in my hand! My wife does our facebook and instagram but the videos, the voice overs, edits, music, thumbnails, titles, keywords, tags, description, the whole shabang, is done the same way you are doing it :) It's extremely hard, and yeah, 8 hours is a good day for a video! You're totally right though, a lot of people don't realize the amount of work that it takes to make a video. Put it this way, Tuesdays are a late day for me because of the comments at night, but normally I'm in bed by 8 with a cup of coffee made and next to my bed. My alarms is at the foot of the bed so I have to get up to turn it off, but it goes off a little bit before 3, I slam the coffee and sleep for about 10 min or so until I have to get up jacked on coffee and rushing to the bathroom. Then it's working on the videos and all that stuff until work at 8 AM! So the haters will always be there, but they don't really matter, they aren't doing anything. You just keep at it and work on figuring out how to make a better product that will better serve more people to build your community!

@@BornAgainBoating there's one I believe they actually call a carving saw. It's small and light weight. The bar it wide at the back and narrow out onto the tip. Makes for better control in areas you need to be careful in. As always if you decide to go with that, be cautious of the kick back. It's more of a kick up. You'll understand once you use it. Chainsaw is a chainsaw no matter the size. I would get an old ladies g or a doner boat and do a little practice with it to get the feel for it. Once you have it down. You'll never use your grinder for that job again.

@@BornAgainBoating I used one myself on a bass boat transom. Makes short work of that job. There's a product out of Florida call seacast. It's a liquid that epoxy that cures bullet proof hard. There's several shops even using it to replace stringers. It's a little pricey but you'll never replace the transom or stringers again. There's a few KZbin videos on it with the guys using chainsaws to remove the old wood. Check it out!.

This is how I do transoms but I have never used synthetic yet. The boat would have to be the very high end before I would spend money like that. Usually, 3/8 wood and multiple layers rough it up so the resin can stick to it. Epoxy if big horsepower used. I put 150hp on a 16ft boat and used polyester resin and stress cracks from asshole to breakfast I lean heavily toward west system epoxy now. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGmvYYKMn7uEr6s

@@BornAgainBoating like 20ft boat low-end boat I would use wood way cheaper. But I would seriously consider epoxy resin. A transom should last 20 years min 30 if done right. By that time who cares. 10 gallons of poly to do stringers in that boat imagine the cost in West sys.

This drives me absolutely crazy. The next person that I see re do a transom by cutting the outside skin is gonna get the dummy award. Always always always cut the splash well out from inside the boat even if you have to cut the rear corners of the gunwale off. Always always always leave the outside molded skin of the transom to bond your new core to. This is just stupid. Feel free to comment or contact me for real fiberglass advise. By the way i build lifetime boats that never break in Maui Hawaii.
