Thank you soooo much for this video. This is exactly what I needed. I now know why I get a little pool at the edge. I was brushing straight across and off the edge. So the side I drag my brush off pools or leaves little bubbles. Even if I do it really lightly. I see that you don’t drag your brush off. Love you videos Kim. Thanks for all your tips.

You are so welcome! Thank you for watching (as usual) :) Yes exactly, I kind of fan it a little every time I go or come up to the edge and then pull it out across the piece - no pooling or or bubbling! Thank you so much!

Love, love love your channel!!… Love how clear, descriptive and to the point you are. You’re an excellent teacher and I’ve already learned so much from you. I’m hooked! Question: You make a reference to the finish still being on the top in certain areas. Is that something you determine by touch?

Thank you so much! No you can typically see it and I know because I have not gone through all the grits of sandpaper that I need to - so I know I have further sanding and finish to remove

This is a great instructional video for top coating. I am having trouble with my GF water based Satin top coat over a wash over maple top table. I am now on my 6th application because I am not ever p,eased with the way it looks. Either I missed spots, had stroke marks (using a foam brush) or saw uneven lines when dry ( shouldn’t see that) or maybe not enough on foam brush?So I keep redoing but now it’s getting shiny which I don’t like. How can I start over without ruining the wash. I really don’t want to take to bare wood. I now have Zibra brush so I will use that now. What would you suggest? I think there are too many coats on it now. What do you think of orbital sanding it with 220(or higher) to remove streaking. I have spent far too much time on this table top, this is so frustrating but I can’t stop now. It’s a beautiful 100yr old pure Maple table and it’s gotta go! Fusion pedestal base with Cast Iron and Algonquin wash over top

I am a newbie and I very much appreciate your videos, you are precise and clear with instructions and your work is amazing. The top of this dress is magnificent. Is the top coat you used water based? if not, what do you clean your brush with? (mineral spirits?)
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! Yes this is a water based topcoat - I only use water based now. Easy clean up, easier to work with, less toxic and levels better and you can thin with water! So just soap and water clean up - If you using oil I don't recommend using a super expensive brush as it is hard to clean out even with mineral spirits

@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks again, I also prefer water-based paints (Flusion so far). I tried oil-based stain and I wasn't pleased with my work plus fumes gave me a headache, windows open and all. Cheers!

@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
Not too much on this one, it all depends on the wooed species, if it does though just knock it down with an extra fine grit sanding pad or 0000 steel wool

Hi, I have painted a piece with Fusion Mineral paint and put SFO on it and it looks beautiful however I wish to add more sheen, can I use a satin water base polycrylic over SFO or should I use an oil based top coat?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique Жыл бұрын
Hi! You have options. You can add the SFO on the natural, you can add an oil base poly and if you wait 72 hours min (SFO can take longer to dry depending on climate) you can add a water based poly over the top as well (I have done this many times. You can absolutely add water over oil as long as you yield the dry time on the label (each oil based product will vary)

How long do you let latex paint dry before top coat?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique Жыл бұрын
Hi I don’t use latex paint on furniture. I use water based acrylic paints for the most part and depending on your climate 2-3 hours is usually sufficient

Well, mine didn’t turn out like yours so now I’ve got to start over with sanding top. When u diluted paint, was it more water than paint?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
Each time I do this its different, deepening on the wood species I am working with, how sheer I want it or if I want it more apparent and less blended. For this one I did about a 50/50 wash, wiping back immediately and I only did one pass with the wash

Do you sand the last coat of top coat? If so what with?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
No - I never sand the last coat, sanding in between alleviates that feeling of roughness or initial raised grain. The only thing I have ever done on a final finish if I really need to is take a brown paper sack/lunch bag and rub over it - it will make it nice and smooth without etching or scratching or dulling the surface

Wow. So helpful. Have a couple questions.... #1. Do you never put top coat over a semi gloss, gloss, or satin paint finish? #2. My problem with top coats is that my edges where I go across with my brush are SO HARD to get snooth. I am always having issues with the ends of rows. Its never consistent. What am I doing wrong? Going to heavy handed? Too fast?
@BorninaBarnBoutique
@BorninaBarnBoutique 2 жыл бұрын
So all furniture paints I use and most on the market do not come in sheens like say paint from the hardware store. Some have built in topcoats with mostly an eggshell or satin sheen and you can put an additional topcoat on them, but I don't use household type paint that has the different levels of sheen you are talking about. I hope that answers that question! :) As you see me do in the video, its almost like I feather the edges, to ensure no pooling or dripping. If that is happening you have too much product and quite possibly need to have a lighter hand as well, I work pretty fast, so I am sure its not that (Sometimes I need to be slower just for the sake of making a mistake) :)

I’m getting ready to paint a dresser and chest, for myself, and most likely white. Thanks for the info that top coating white isn’t a good idea. Do you work on your garage? It’s gets too hot here to work in my garage so I’ll be painting inside my house which will dictate what brand/type of products I can use. Any recommendations? Ty PS I’m a new subbie.

Of course! I do - well it is my workshop (not our garage) all year round. Most all water based paints are easy to use indoors (most don't have real odors and most are no VOC or low VOC's) so they are pretty safe to work with. My top paints are - Fusion Mineral Paint, Lilly Moon Paint, Country Chic and Melange ONE

Great video got a quick question off topic do you ever run across small furniture like chairs ,coffee tables etc. Pieces that don’t bring that much money but are in great condition and solid wood For very low price or free My question is do you pass on them or take a chance just asking for myself because I question buying it or not thank you so much

Thanks so much! I do not anymore. They just aren't worth the time it takes for the small profit. The only time I buy or take free small pieces is when I am going to use for a video and then I may try and sell or I donate them
