I think the new colors are pretty neat, definitely better than the pure black, but the yolk was better before in my opinion. The fact that it's a weak-point in the game should be highlighted in the design, so I think the bright yellow would be a lot better to indicate that it is important. Additionally it could also have a weak glow to it, so that even in low-light situations the player would be able to see the weak-point easily

The yellowish color and texture you are talking about at the beggining of the video reminds me of the dead bodies medical students and overall people who work on the medical field use. I think it would actually be better to have the yolk be brighter than the rest, otherwise it doesn't really stand out, it just looks like a face. I also posted a few notes on the last video but I was pretty late so I'll just include them here again: for the armored neonate, I think it would be cool to have it's idle animation include the hand lovingly stroking it's own yoke, that would be pretty uncomfortable. Also, I think that it being on its knees like that implies a level of intamcy I don't like lmao, which in this case is a good thing

Im preety sure you dodged "cum monster" meme preety closely. In my opinion you should try the idea of makeing skin semi-translucent with alot of veins peering teough. It could look very disturming on a large sufface area of their sides. You could also experiment with their cores (aka. Egg yolk) emiting light. (Similarly to eyes of the witnesses) Idea being that undeveloped ones need some sort of light to percieve their surroundings properly. If it worked sort of like a flashlight it could also give player a clear idea where monsters are looking and instantly introduce a mechanic of stealth to their desighn.

Ive been loving these horror themed videos. For the neonates I think combining both ideas would be even better, what you did now is great but I enjoyed the black and yellow too. My first thought was covering them in a sort of black goop, like rotten amniotic fluid but more viscous. More stringy and drippy than just completely coated onto the character, similar in consistency to the goop already on the model. With plenty of large gaps and maybe some vein-like structures throughout. (Chalazae of an egg?) The contrast of the light fleshy color and dark rotting fluid would be interesting IMO. Maybe you could even make 3 or so variations of each model using placements of the goop, to add a sort of randomness and further enemy variety without the need to drastically change the forms.

Changing the albumen from black was definitely the right choice. In my opinion it looks much creepier with the iodized colors instead of looking like some underdeveloped symbiotes that got ahold of some egg yolks
@kingdomheartsrugrats2 жыл бұрын
I do think you should play around with the colour of the 'yolk' a bit more because it gets a bit lost in the rest of the figure now, I think the stark contrast it had before was important considering it's the weak point of the enemies. Pus is more green-yellow than orange-yellow, so maybe a hue shift in that direction could give some contrast against the reds as well as increase the sickly factor? (Also - the blanket term for stuff that leaks from wounds is called exudate. Theres different kinds other than pus but all of them are gross. Hope that helps with finding inspiration lol)

I think the yoke could benefit from some jelly-like translucency. Maybe even some internal reflection/refraction that suggests that recursion of the infinity motif.
@MamiferoReptil2 жыл бұрын
You could use fleshy colors for them with a touch of infinity as you said as a feature they must have. Like in the "cloaked one" you could use like a leather veiny like cloak and the yolk cold be transparent with a featus inside, then the inside part of the cloak you could use a paint or something that would remember the infinity of the universe, like a portal, something infinity.

personally i think having the yolk should stand out like the witnesses eyes, it would help it read as something to attack, rather than just be its face. I love the new color! I was really confused when you said there was no eyedropper in substance? There is one, you can even select colors from outside of the apps window (like a color palette in a pureref) its super powerful. You can only eyedrop colors and not full materials so maybe thats what you meant? Ps: If you want to transfer the color you painted on this high poly to your low poly and UVed character, you can use the baking tool in painter, use your vertex painted model as "high poly" and bake the "ID" map from the vertex paint. You won't get roughness or metallic but you should be able to bake a map containing the color information (then use it as the color channel of a fill layer)

Silent Hill (the first four games by Team Silent anyways) has very distinct rules to creating visual horror and dread throughout the games and colour theory is one of them. For monster designs, almost no monsters have faces, they are either covered (like Pyramid head/ nurses) distorted to the point where they can't be precieved as a face, or don't have heads at all, since humans empathize with faces. They also NEVER use green or blue with anything in the games (they are the two most calming colours to humans), unless its for a sympathetic human character or a safe place, and it will be desaturated and used sparingly (like heathers skirt in the 3rd game). The main inspiration for the monster designs comes from the art of Francais Bacon and they mostly use rusty reds, deep shadow blacks, gross looking yellows and grays with a lot of grimey looking textures for them and the environments, I would suggest studying the first 4 games for inspiration, ignore the rest as they are made by other people who had no idea about these visual horror concepts. They also made the environments in the games claustrophobic by making the outside environments foggy, and the inside ones dark so you always felt trapped and unable to see. They are a master class in video game horror.

Like, I can see their yolk part being translucent to show how “fresh” they are. I guess you could even represent that by how vibrant the yolk color is? 🤔 I feel like having the yolk shiny really helps with that “freshness”! I hope that this input helps you find what you’re looking for with your monster designs. Thank you for such interesting videos, I’m looking forward to seeing your future updates!

Materials is definitely where it's at. Unreal and Unity allows faked subsurface scattering that isn't too taxing on the GPU that'd be perfect for making the white flesh more fleshy. Also consider making another shader for the "egg yolk" so that it swirls and looks cloudy to up the yuck factor. The red sore joints and stretched skin is already way better looking than the nebulous black blobs that you had before, so good work!

My favorite horror colors are skintones mixed with red, purple, green and white. Evokes feelings of pain and decay. Anything rusty and unclean from browns to greenish/bluish spots what comes to clothes and metals. This is ofc mostly what comes to bodyhorror of any kind. More prominent base colors comes handy sometimes. Like if we have certain time periods in mind like 80s in all its colorfulness or alien creatures that lack human features. And yes i think not going with black is good unless your design really needs it. Like dark, oil or something else truly black being a theme of yours. Fully black can work as a part of a creature if you want a creature to be blending into darkness. Keyword being part as something like clothes, fur, batwings and what not usually do not cover the whole figure but have either consious or evolutionary explanation of being black. Shadows and lack of light will still do most of the work for you in dark settings and in videogame you still want player to see the monster even if partially

Generally I find when making grotesque monsterous creatures colors of bile work best and I recommend sticking the word bile into ones head as it gives you a good idea of colors that are meant to be disgusting or unpleasent on a basic human instinctual level. Bile can be pitch black, puss colors, red, brown, greens even and to a degree orange. despite blue and purple being ommitted you can still use them very rarely in specific ways such as veins for example as those still will have a sense of gross bile like feel to them as veins being exposed will always be offputting, exspecially if they are simply mixed in with gore like gush which I think you could get some milage out of sibce you have a egg theme going on and eggs have veins in them during their process of forming the animal inside. Also with your egg like theme have you considered chunks of skin being missing missing like a mix inbetween dried skin cracking off and an egg cracking, perhaps even calcium deposit esque.

Besides, if all the light was eminating form that souce the first time the player sees these things would be when only a blob would be hovering and when they see that blob in a diffrent place, they would be on edge. The ability to highlight where the most stickikng feaure, then contrasing it by making it draw the eye to a completely diffrent place is interesting. My two cents.

i like the new color a lot, it fits way more, and reminds me of the skin of ghouls in the fallout franchise somehow

Or how about those sickly colors human skin get during surgeries, where the reduced blood circulation combined with that orange medicine they spread to keep things clean, and blood stains, make for a bit of a uncanny valley effect?

Here's a list of colors: Burnt sienna Burnt skin Nougat Brick red Iron Rust Black Dark red Crimson Here's a slightly less horror ish color list that isn't as scary but still indicates something negative in a game: Olive green Purple If you want a character to be scary you just have to (imo) make it seem like something familiar to the public, and then take away something from them to make them look uncomfortable. For example, take a human, make it slightly thin then remove the eyelids and give it an unnecessarily big smile that breaks his face bones

I’m making a fantasy game and most of the monsters are connected so they are all similar colors and I chose red because it is associated with blood and body parts, anger, and other negative or gross things

To be fairly honest, the egg yolk really disappears right now. I really feel like they should stand out, also in terms of game design. It should communicate that it is a vulnerable spot. I think a slight emission from it would benefit, and giving the goop a translucency for it to project a glow through. I know that is of course a bit cliché, but sometimes a cliché works well in context.

I actually really liked the black Venom look. I thought it was really cool, but I understand what you're trying to do with the whole Silent Hill vibes. That said, I still think the yolk should have emission as though it were a light source. This works from a gameplay perspective as well if the yolk is meant to be its weak point. It signals to the player where they're supposed to hit to defeat them while helping it stand out and be more horrifying. I also think the egg whites on the outside are a bit too uniform and need a bit of color variation as well - like maybe black or brown rot as though it had been left out in the sun too long.
