Thank you for this episode. I love how it was not a lecture to the audience. I love how when a character has to have an unrealistic change of heart, you played up how absurd it is. I love how you raised male genital mutilation as a hypocrisy humans have. I love how the characters feel real, instead of idealized or placeholders. I love how the fact that you have a gay couple on ship is so seamless that nobody is even talking about it onboard or in real life, unlike that (cough) other show. Well done! You have balls.

Ep 3, "About a Girl," is one of the best science fiction episodes I've seen. Ever. A lot of thought went into it; people will have to think it over and come to their own conclusions afterward. Fantastic! I'm hooked. Can't wait for ep 7 upcoming, and I sure hope the show is renewed for season 2 and beyond. Keep it up, Orville! Also, I'd say 3 or 4 of the eps have been outstanding so far, and the others have been above average; one of the strongest first seasons of a science fiction show I've seen in a long time. Great stuff. Thanks!

I have to disagree. The conflict made very little sense, they kept trying to force the human version of genders onto a society that doesn't have genders the way humans do. On the surface, it might seem smart, but the episode was most highlighting human ignorance and I am no sure that was what the writers intended...
@michellethesaiyan5 жыл бұрын
kabeltelevizio uhm it wasn’t just human behavior. when Gordon said “he would lose a lot of friends§” its implying that no only would they lose the his crew respect but also the rest of the ship where as mocklins that are aboard the ship seem to be the only people with a male gender society. To force a sexchange on the newborn would be barbaric in the eyes of the other species. I was quite fond of the episode because it explain like you said human ignorance and ethics but at the same time explaining themselves their should be a universal law against doing that operation at a newborn if the child was older or it had defect then it wouldn’t be a problem. For that it became a union problem since the child was born on the vessel. If the child was born on mockin world then the crew couldn’t interfere.
@andrewdiaz35294 жыл бұрын
@@kabeltelevizio I think that was mostly oversight on the part of kelly. She messed up that part of the defense.
@kabeltelevizio4 жыл бұрын
@@andrewdiaz3529 Not really, it was humans forcing their worldview on a non-human species. Imagine having the worldview of wolves forced on humans if you want a parable. Kelly and the crew were in the wrong there entirely. Their definition of gender does not apply to the mocklin species, even calling them males is nonsensical. As far as I can tell mocklins sometimes have genetic defect that produces a weaker mocklin. This mocklin is referred to be female by the humans. I have no idea why, and I feel like the writers of the show didn't know what they were doing either.
@6324MR4 жыл бұрын
@@kabeltelevizio What you say would have made sense at first but now from what we know they aren't a single gender species. They are a 2 gender species,but you might be right if they reproduce asexually we still need more info on that because I don't know if they can lay an egg with or without a partner and as far as I know only the men give birth because they never say a woman can lay an egg. If the woman is unnecessary then I think you can call them a genetic mistake.

A whole society based on male dominance regardless of born sex. This episode walked a definite line especially when an adult female alien was found and they still rejected her! This should not be confused by any trans issues since the baby had no say . Instead I see the moral ineptitude of a forced male only "boys club " society. Very Star Trek Next Gen type episode And we got some humor in this one with yellow blob Yaphit trying to get a date from the Doctor!
@hughmiller63897 жыл бұрын
Really they are females, they just call themselves males. They can reproduce without another gender, which a all male specie couldn't. There are all female species of fish and lizard. And in rare cases a male is born, but because how the specie evold the male have no genetic dealing and become a dead line, since female are born pregnate. Just need to mature to lay eggs.
@sonaruo7 жыл бұрын
your definition of specie is wrong. the male and female specie fo them they may both possess both genitalia thus making reproduction of male male a possibility, but the difference in that specie on male and female as said in the show is that the male is more strong physical. if you look at our animal species in our planet you will see that there are some species 2 gendered but where the female is stronger and bigger than the male, the male take care of the young ones ... and lets talk about fish the female lays eggs and the male throws the sperm to make them active. but both of them throw their genetic material in the water and noone carries the babies. so you can see that male female can be confusing if you combare it to a male human female human.

It also struck that their not interference directive is different than in Star Trek. In Star Trek, they PROBABLY would have let the asteroid strike the planet. I think altering it would be interfering in the natural development of the Planet 'Elna 4'. If the asteroid or comet which caused the extinction of the Dinosaur had not struck, what would have happened?
