He isn't good at everything...I mean, sure, he can use Wind Style and Lightning Style from having practiced in the academy, but that is what's called an early start. They only practiced with D-rank jutsu in the Academy during Naruto's time, and Boruto can only use four shadow clones at a time (originally, he could only use three during his time in the Academy).

There’s one thing that confuses me about this fight, even under the control of Shadow Possession, the user controls the actions of the possessed. Boruto shouldn’t have been able to use that device after being captured. Just like the fight with Shikamru and Temari when they were younger. Temari mimicked every action that Shikamaru did.

it's been established before that you can still move under the influence of the jutsu, mostly because the user runs out of/low on chakra and can no longer maintain it as effectively (see Shikamaru's fights with Hidan and Tayuya respectively)

Shikadai uses a different Jutsu, it’s the Kage Shibari (or shadow paralisys) Shikamaru used shadow possession but stopped using it when shipudden started , ever since then he’s used Kage Shibari

As much as I dislike Boruto cheating against his bro (which is a major no no), I do like how its a flaw that was incorporated into his character. It wouldn’t be nearly as interesting if he just won purely off of skill because he’s already pretty good compared to most. So seeing him be so obsessed with winning in order to get Naruto’s approval so much so that he’d cheat against his best friend in something as serious as the chunin exams is a great way to show that he has a long way to go in his character development

Shikumaru in his exam used tree's, the sun, his own jacket, time and even a hole left from someone elses exam to effectively win (cos let's face it he pretty much did win) And here they are both in just a circular room. And he simply just expands his shadow in a big circle to win.

I see people arguing about Boruto useing the tool being considered cheating when using a kunai isnt as they are "both tools". Heres is why, you still have to learn how to use a Kunai and everyone has access to them. The Tool uses skills that the user DIDNT PUT IN THE TIME TO LEARN or develop and Boruto was the only one with one. So if you use the Tool as a crutch it is too tempting to rely on it all the time, thus making it a battle of the users tools not their skills. Think of it as Pay-to-Win where you can buy attacks outside of your skill level that dont cost energy to use.

Everyone wants to shit on Boruto for cheating, which is reasonable. But I do think people aren't giving him a fair shake. When he breaks down and says he resorted to cheating to impress his father, he isn't just making excuses. Now, don't get me wrong: cheating is not cool, and for him to do it against his friend is even worse. But he isn't wrong in saying that Naruto didn't help him. Shikadai did well against Boruto precisely because his father helped him learn a new technique that would counter his shadow clones. Had Naruto helped Boruto with his training, maybe things would have been different. Boruto knows this is his one chance to impress his father, because his dad MUST pay attention to him at the Chunin exams, which is a state function. Boruto is still a kid, and every kid wants the attention and respect of their parents. Yea, Boruto grew up with many privileges that his father did not have, and the amount of suffering and hardship that Naruto went through is greater than Boruto's by a wide margin. Even so, that doesn't mean that Boruto's pain is less significant or less real. Boruto has his own challenges to bear that are unique to him (e.g. living up to his father's legend, forging a relationship with an overworked father, etc.). Boruto was wrong to cheat, but his reasons for doing so weren't out of ego or avarice; he just wanted his dad to acknowledge him. Boruto does eventually get that acknowledgment, and makes up for his wrongs and learns to value his friends more in the process. I don't know, guess I like Boruto (the character). Kinda wish the anime could keep up with the manga though, because the Boruto (anime) is loaded with bad filler. But then, so was Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden.

What's annoying is that somehow Sasuke seems like a better dad than Naruto. Sasuke is almost never in the village, yet he was able to teach Sarada some jutsus and take on Boruto as an apprentice. At least Naruto is in the village, and somehow he's not even able to use his clones all that effectively, despite the fact that he fought in the war for days without rest with thousands of clones.

I would just like to state for the record that the original chunin exams featured: Sakura v Ino - Battle of the useless - Bloodless/Draw/Literally Nothing Choji v Dosu - No blood/violence - Just Dosu mocking Choji Shikimaru v Kin - No blood/violence - Both just talked until one hit their head on a wall. Shino v Zaku - No violence/blood - Shino just kind of dodged until Zaku's attack backfired on him Naruto v Neji - Low Violence/Blood - Naruto took 64 palm, then one-punched Neji Shikimaru v Temari - No Violence/Blood - Both played tactically off of each other, looking for a secure win and only 1 or 2 direct attacks were ever made Literally only a handful of fights during the Chunin Exams in the original series were in any way threatening to one participant or the other. In fact, tthe Shikimaru ones tend to be the better remembered, despite them having little in the way of actual direct violence involved. Heck, lots of these fight had the fighters mocking each other. Orochimaru spent at least half of his fight with Sarutobi laughing at him, Shikimaru complained all the time, and Neji spent all of his fights complaining about how his family sucks. Only a couple of the matches had any worthwhile fight choreography. I get the idea you're trying to present, but you're two examples are literally of end-of-arc antagonists, one of whom being the a series final boss. Plus, these are supposed to be genin, so while I get the idea that SOME sort fo lethal skill should be presented, I don't really think you should be expecting the same level of lethality, especially in 1) This age of peace, and 2) The fact that two of the participating villages are no longer being run by a power-mad scaley. I know I put way too much effort into this response, but this complaint it really commonplace for some reason, and I just don't get why because it doesn't hold up at all.

I’ll take some time to MORE thoroughly analyze both, since you actually have a good points(like the battle of the useless, Shikamaru vs the sound girl or whatever and some others). The only reason Naruto could make so many clones even as a kid is because he always had ridiculous amounts of chakra, due to being an Uzumaki and the reincarnation of Asura, and having Kurama inside him. Boruto, while still probably having a good amount of chakra from his Uzumaki roots, doesn't have anywhere near the amount Naruto has, so he can't make as many clones as easily as Naruto can.

Actually everyone of boruto generation is considered geniuses. Boruto actually was being trained by Hinata in the gentle fist style. Which is why his fighting style resemble the gentle fist. But he's not able to block chakra points because he doesn't have the byakugan. Shikadai has actually been through tough raining since he was a kid as well. with his father he's able to use his family's secret techniques. With Mirai he's able to cancel genjutsu. With tamari he learned and is able to use windstyle. In his narutopedia file it's actually said shikadai already had a counter strategy against boruto if he used rasegan. It's also said shikadai is able to use his mother's weazle slash jutsu which leveled part of a forest back during part one of naruto. Shikadai is no sloch. He has more variety of Jutsu then his father did.

Forget how stupid boruto was acting... SHIKADAI is litterally just following him with his shadow, even though there is 4 borutos.... if he didn’t get that handsign off fast enough he would’ve been screwed.... borutos hand was a centimeter away from shikadais face, and boruto could still kind of move his hand

Boruto knows basic Gentle Fist techniques; having learned them from the Hyuga Clan. He can't make the most of it (i.e. strike chakra points or have 360-degree defense) due to his lack of the byakugan, so he usually compensates by incorporating wind release into the techniques.
