Can’t believe all the the negative comments. Been a carpenter, builder, remodeler since 1977. I can’t tell you how many times I wish there was something like this that could easily be held with one hand that wasn’t a block plane. I love this thing. So easy to control. On the rare occasion I need something more I’ll grab my corded Maita. But usually this all I need to plane a little off a door or gate. And I usually don’t need to figure out a way to clamp the door or work piece because my other hand is free.

I read the entire Ryan's kzbin.infoUgkxGqOCINHE0Z0E5gxzSdNi9NWGugRY5Hm2 Plans and was able to make a shed plan. Using Ryan's Shed Plans alone, the shed itself is great. Where I wish I knew more is with respect to ground preparation and foundations. Maybe that's beyond the scope of Ryan's Shed Plans.

Well Kyle, as a retired painter of 45 years, I can't tell you how many times I wished the darn drywallers would have had a handy planer like that to fix bad spots in the framing before they drywalled it and made the bulge or blemish permanent. Everyone is in a hurry these days and these bad areas snowball and by the time they get down to the painter, there is often little we can do to fix things. I admire your attitude immensely. OCD goes a long way to building a top notch business.

" wished the darn drywallers would have had a handy planer like that to fix bad spots in the framing before they drywalled it and made the bulge or blemish permanent" You really think they would do that? Easier to just blame it on the framers if anyone complains, especially today where half the people in construction have very little skill or experience and almost no training. My dad is a retired painter also and he went through the whole apprenticeship thing that doesn't really seem to exist anymore.

These are great for deck building. Prior to installing the decking you snap a chalk line from sill to rim and you can see which boards are high and which are low. Run the planer over the high spots for a dead flat deck. You'll be happy you took the time.

Kyle great video, lets face the facts anyone with a thumbs down on this video is probably a hack that has never done frame to finish. As a builder of frame to finish of new homes, the small details like this pays big dividends when it comes to finish work. You are truly at the top of post frame building, your fit and finish is second to none. I always tell my guys pay attention to details and those details will always take care of you with repeat costumers. P.S. i will have that cordless planner tomorrow!!!

I use the Dewalt 20v cordless version. A bit heavier and slightly larger than the one in the video. Works great when doing replacement windows and doors and you need to shave a little off to true things up. Also works great on custom cabinet installs when you need to trim a little to get the cabinets to fit. While I would much prefer my joiner the amount of time and wages I save by having one of these in the truck makes it pay for itself. It's one of those tools you didn't know you had a use for until you have one and then you are finding all kinds of things you can use it for. While I wouldn't call it a great planer compared to what we have in our shop it gets the job done. Consider this....installing cabinets between two walls and your cabinets are 1/2 inch oversized for the space...Pay your workers to load said cabinets back into the trailer, haul to shop, trim to proper size, load back up and take to job site and install. Easily over $100 in wages, fuel, etc. or...go grab the cordless planer and take a light pass on each cabinet frame....what 10 minutes in wages maybe?

I have a Dewalt 20v Planer, DCP580B. If you don’t have one of these, no matter what manufacturer, it is a must have. I own a couple of properties here in the Boston area. On one I was replacing a storm door on the back porch. For some reason when it was built, the door frame at the top was sloped and made out of a 3” x 3”. The is a 100 year old house. To square the jam so I could install the top trim, I need to remove about 5/16 from the outer edge to the middle on a slope. I thought about how I was going to do it. I thought about the planer, decided to give it a try and it worked flawlessly. It took me longer to build staging over the steps than it took to plane the wood. I did it by planning across the header. I love cordless tools. I have full set of Dewalt. I started acquiring them when the 20v models started coming out. My next purchase will be great 20v hand held router

Great review! I’ve started buying the 12v Bosch Professional range for DIY use. As a professional builder doing heavy duty carpentry you have demonstrated the value of these small but powerful tools. Although not in the league of the 18V or 20V cordless tool, they occupy a niche area when it comes to ease of use and where light, compact tools are adequate for the job.

I never carry mine around much it lives in a tool bag covered by a soft blanket but is always close by, I don't want to scratch the base. So true once you have one it just allows you make those slight adjustments to things that seperate you from the pack. Thanks for sharing. Love your attitude. Jealous of your shop!.... Someday!

I built a porch over my deck some years ago and I created my beam using 3 2x12s nailed together. Looked perfect until it was time to put my trim on the underside of the beam. The trim would not lay flat because the beam was off just a bit like in your video example. I was so tired and worn out and didn’t know how to fix it that I put the trim on anyway, and it’s bugged me ever since. Thanks to your video I now know what to do to fix it. I’ll remove the trim and plane down the 2x12s until they are flush with each other and reattach the trim. Thanks so much for posting!!

If you ever get tired of post frame building Sargento and Kraft have got openings for people to make shredded cheese. Bosch a few years back changed their nomenclature for this line of tools from 10.8v to 12.0 volt. Nothing different than instead of using the nominal voltage of the in series batteries to using the charged voltage. Basically the same thing that B&D and DeWalt do to get 20 volts verses the rest of industry that offers 18 volt. The two best tools in this Bosch line are the screw gun and the right angle drill driver. They’re small but mighty.

I can see the need for this. You get some newb that installs a twisted stud in a wall and the drywall guy needs to flatten the corner of that stud so his drywall will lay flat. Also, sometimes you might be in a tight place where getting a standard plane in there might be difficult to do.
