I’ve used Stay Bright 8 for years and absolutely love it. Harris spec sheets say that the joint has more than a 10,000 psi tensile strength which is more than enough for an AC system. Cleaning the copper is crucial and you need to be careful using flux. Just need a light film . Never had a failure yet.

Hey mike, I just installed my first bosch ids 2.0 5 ton unit about a month ago and I found that the directions are very literal about the "short press" of the force button. You can also check the discharge pressure and temperature without gauges and calculate a pretty accurate subcool reading with the board readouts.

I have been using Stay Brite since HVAC vo-tech school in 1985. My instructor always said it is better than brazing and stronger. It also works with any flux so if you run out of stay clean don't worry.
@Djsmiley773 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Will flux contaminate freon? Do you need to nitrogen flush only while brazing or you need to do it while soldering as well? Why is then brazing used when soldering can do the job? Can soldered joints withhold 410A pressures and for how long? Is this just like soldering water lines ?
@houptee3 жыл бұрын
@@Djsmiley77 stay brite 8 is silver solder not the same as the lead free plumbing solder. It has real silver in it. Look it up it is very expensive for a roll. The manufacturer Harris tested it and it holds stronger than brazed joints. No need to run nitrogen when using stay brite because you are not heating the pipe cherry red and creating oxidation inside the tubing.

Inspect all your joints with a mirror and flashlight 🔦 after doing and if you know what your doing there should be 0% chance that that joint will never leak. I haven't seen any of my 1000s of soldered and brazed joints leak for decades now. In fact I guarantee that none of joints will ever leak! Only debur also if no chance off burs getting into system. It doesn't take much to restrict an orifice or cap tube. Seen such a thousand times. Watching some guys push lines through some holes or sleeving insulation on with out putting tape or something on the open end makes me cringe. Filter/ driers also. Once you take their caps off or open the can they come in is not a time to take even a minute break! Get them installed and sealed on the system asap. Same with POE oil as they can suck up all the moisture from the open atmosphere that they can hold in as little as 9 minutes easpecially in humid environments. In essence you lost the drier part of it if you take a break after fitting it and not sealing it into the system 1000s of pro tips I believe I have. Hopefully everyone just thinks I'm giving good suggestions?

I learned about Stay Bright #8 From Steve Lav years ago and love it. IT DOES NOT FILL GAPS, and the pipe HAS to be absolutely clean. But I find just find it so much easier and faster to work with in tite spots with its lower melting point VS brazeing. I Especially love it on mini split linesets that you have to run in walls. I trust that joint so much more then a flared one if your gonna stuff it in a wall. The Super techs will cry all day long about how you cant solder refrigerant lines with R410A and how its against code but the fact is that it works great
@nlh8162 Жыл бұрын
We also insulate the liquid line on heat pump applications and we have to use UV to the insulation in the south.
@ryanellett24093 жыл бұрын
You soldered the liquid filter drier in a good spot but you did it first and left it open to atmosphere at condensing unit. You should always solder the drier in last. It has desiccant material in it that absorbs moisture. If you leave it open to atmosphere, within 30-45 minutes it can be full of moisture already. That’s why it’s the last solder joint in system. Also that suction line is the discharge line in the heat pump mode.

Quick tip after first press rotate tool a quarter turn and press again to make it round looking easpecially if soldering that doesn't close gaps as well as brazing. I'm an easy spin swagger kinda guy these days up to 7/8" Makes a good 1/2" deep perfectly round swage and heats up the copper burning hot while doing so. A simple drill attachment I wish I invented! Before we used to put pipe into a flaring/ swaging block and hammer a swage into pipe. BTW way same sort of drill attachment to make perfect flares these days in seconds also

Refrigeration guys that I do for my living along with AC would never use staybrite! Water lines a different story. 15% "sil fos# always! Silver soldering a different story. Physically stronger than soldering with no flux needed and even if pipes are not 100% clean will guarantee for lifetimes never to leak + you can bridge gaps/ repair holes in pipe with it which I've done thousands of times with minimal cleaning Cheaper it is, it doesn't require oxy/ acetylene to do, but how many people do it properly and not contaminate system with flux. Maybe it doesn't even require nitrogen purging whenever possible that a good tech/ installer would use for brazing I'm old school still learning even after 30yrs doing this. I'll never touch a CO2 system but cringe at people who do and would think to use staybrite for such pressures. Back yrs ago when 410a "Puron" came out new procedures said specifically not to soft solder because of higher pressures. Apion selling vacuum pumps advertising oil changes possible in the middle of an evacuation!?? My 20+ yr old JB still pulls way below 500 micron on every job. I replace her oil only after evacuating a few burn outs! I use the ballast valve on it on every job to preserve it's oil! Something few people I see use or know about Cringe even more seeing supply houses like Johnstone advertising shark bite like push in fittings for HVACR! Double O rings y'all! Scary 😨
@georgekolos52553 жыл бұрын
Mikey I'd hire you but I'd tell you that after seeing you flip breakers on/off so quickly to never do again! I learned the hard way a few times of doing such over the yrs. Many refrigeration systems and ACs require some off time for high/ low side pressures to equalize before the compressor can restart. Short cycling is not good! My lessons learned were that some units compressors never wanted to restart after such short cycling with constantly clicking off on thermal overload. May I reccomended a cheap circuit breaker tracer tool? You clip it on to live wires or receptacles with its adapters included and go to the panel or panels with it's receiver and go up and down the breakers and it beeps like a leak detector does when it's on the breaker you're looking for. Lots of time and hassles saved by not shutting off people's computers etc. Mine is Zircon brand. Many others like it I'm sure. Old school me used to just intentionally short to ground and look for the tripped breaker! Love your videos for my entertainment and hopefully no offense to you about my comments

@@georgekolos5255 will harris safety silv 56 work for copper to copper joints in r410a system? i like using this compared to silphos 15. it flows really really well compared to 15% silphos. its melting temperature is approx 630c, which is lower than silphos 15. which is a plus in my opinion as it helps prevent overheating sensitive parts when making joints around them. sure it is expensive than silphos 15 but i love how much fun and easy it makes brazing a joint

I was just reading through the stay-brite literature. They claim it is better than brazing because the lower overall working temperature causes less annealing of the base metal (i.e. copper). Normal brazing weakens the overall connection even if the actual brazed joint is strong. So the claim it shouldn't be used on the compressor discharge may be just hearsay. I'm not speaking from experience though, just what they claim.
