The issue is that grief didn't come out of nowhere, it was known to be a problem card in the last B&R announcement and the legacy advisor said to ban Grief, but they didn't So now WotC is living with the consequences of not doing the thing they should have done months ago. If it doesn't get banned in next announcement then i think it would be no exaggeration that legacy would enter an existential crisis.
@grandarchon69692 ай бұрын
@@jakehr3 Legacy has entered and left (and has always been in) an existential crisis depending on who you talk to in what year. For some reason, people still play legacy.
@jakehr32 ай бұрын
@@grandarchon6969 yes & no. I think some have been concerned in the past about certain decks, or WotC support via tournaments, but this feels different. I've been following legacy since like 2012 or so and I can't remember a time when it was dominated by a single deck quite like this. You could argue delver, death's shadow, or murktide were all on that level as well, but even they all never got to the prelevance that re-scaminator has gotten to. I think of B&R doesn't ban grief, then you will see legacy leagues and paper events really drop in player count by quite a bit.

DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE MATCH specifically watching Flare of Denial as if it were instead Disrupting Shoal (with timestamps!). I am not saying any of the plays below are correct. I am only pointing out what would have been possible with Shoal instead. ROUND1 - [7:11] If Flare were Disrupting Shoal, you could have Flare pitch Snapcaster mage on Animate Dead and kept Coatl. I think Snapcaster in hand is more powerful in that spot, though. - In that same game, though, turn 1 not Ponder could have clipped the Reanimate on Grief (or forced them to take the cantrip). ROUND2 - [24:17] You could have Disrupting Shoal pitch Force of Will to Counter Yorion. Saves a life. - [24:50] Snap+Push would have been the only play if Flares were Shoals even if you hadn't tapped for Frog. Would have needed 5 mana to hard cast. - [25:47] Could have Shoal pitched Snapcaster Mage instead of Snap+Spell Snare. -[49:38] In the final moments of the game with them at 5 and you at 9, you had Harbinger and a bunch of CMC1. Could have held Harbinger to counter a 3-drop if the game went on for longer (Flickerwisp, Skyclave, etc.) Round3 - [50:49] Could have pitched Brainstorm to Shoal to counter DRC. Don't think you would have even Forced there, though. - [51:25] Could have also pitched Brainstorm to Shoal to counter NetherGoyf. You had Force here and didn't use it, so you probably would not have done this either. The big thing to note is that you had the ability to counter things that cost 1 and 2 with Shoal for the opening, regardless of which thing to counter. -[52:59] You had just played a Frog with Force, Shoal, Brainstorm, and IceFang in hand. Would have been able to Shoal+ IceFang to keep frog alive with Force backup. Instead you had to Force pitch Flare and lost the counter war and the Frog. If keeping Frogs alive defines the format moving forward, a counter spell that forces you to sacrifice that Frog is not good. Cards in hand is a better and free resource to use (as with Force Of Will/Vigor). -[55:07] Had the Flare been a Shoal, you could have Shoal pitch Brainstorm to counter Fatal Push on your only Coatl. Though you were pretty behind by this point anyway. Your option because of Flare was to eat the Push on your only dude, or sac that dude to counter the push...hmm...this Flare card is not good! - [59:12] "We are once again seeing I'm not able to cast my spells because my [basic] lands don't tap for [the right colors] of mana." --> Flare of Denial forces you to tap the mana you don't have to deploy threats you need to stay alive and then sacrifice those threats you can't afford to lose. It sets you back mana in your tempo deck trying to cheat on mana for speed. ROUND4 -[1:02:11] After sticking the Spellbomb, could have Shoal pitching Baleful Strix to counter Dauthi for the 1-2-punch. Though they did have 6 cards in hand at that point. You did draw the Push and they did have the Daze. Though you would have had 1 mana up because Spellbomb was played on turn two (two lands). - [1:06:43] Spell Snare plus Shoal against reanimator means you have both Reanimate spells in check. Snare the animate dead or pitch it to Shoal for Reanimate. ROUND 5 - never drew it THOUGHTS - Unless you have that critical mass of creatures, Force of Will is still the best free counterspell. Flare of Denial is really only good when there are a lot of 1-drops in your deck. At least 7-10. And at least 21 creatures. You had 15 here. - Lórien Revealed costs 5, the same as Force of Will. Shoal plus Lórien Revealed counters a Force. Food for thought. - Spell Snare plus Shoal is a great combo against aggro decks early game (of course assuming you have maxed out Force of Will because Force+snare is an even better combo, though Shoal as Cancel mana still counters CMC=1 stuff.) - Playing with Disrupting Shoal means looking at the format and asking what you afraid of and what CMC are those things. Then constructing the deck to usually have those CMC. It's not hard to do. People just don't have experience using it because usually crazy people play it (like Greg Hatch or Jordan Boisvert). But they're not wrong!

@chronickat54532 ай бұрын
i feel like flare of denial might be better as a sideboard card. kind of like how people have a couple force of negations in the side for spell/combo heavy matchups as additional forces, but for blue creature heavy decks? idk they kind of have the same niche, but force of negation is way easier to work with.

Round 2 is such a fantastic example of what happens when you lower the power level of the format just 1 iota. Get grief outta here already. Round 2 of this was just so fucking great and that deck doesn't even get to exist in a meta where grief-scam-reanimator is just so powerful and doesn't even have any tangible weaknesses.

my understanding of "dead on board" is that, using only onboard information and maybe private information available to the player in question, they will be dead. I see bosh sometimes saying it in reference to situations where he is presenting lethal, but it is _not_ known by the opponent (e.g. bosh has a snapcaster in hand that he can flash in for 2 more damage that is needed). wondering if this is just a dialect type of deal where we just use the words differently or what
