Still revisiting this album and video all these years later. Truly one of the greatest "super groups" ever made in music. I got to see them when they were originally touring this material under the Omar Rodriguez Lopez Group moniker, the songs were all way longer w classic huge Omar solos, it was legitimately life changing. Then the record dropped and everything was more heavily concentrated, tighter, yet more stripped back and lush. No one blows my mind like Omar in any medium. Also the solo on torn maps in this video..... GOD DAMN 🤤

This is a masterpiece, in every sense of the word. The complex simplicity of the music, the wonderful process of shooting, the positioning of the instruments, the feeling of the artists expressing every second of their music...for me this is a perfect balance that causes this to be one of the most beautiful videos I have ever seen.

How so? This is how people who feel what they’re playing look like - trust me, I’ve been in the studio with “studio pros” who were too blasé to get into what they were playing, who would just show up and phone it in, and also with amateurs AND with studio pros who *committed* to their playing with *everything* they had, and the difference that comes through in the playback is usually palpable, both audibly and in something extra that’s hard to put one’s finger on. And believe me, between the blasé pros and the ones who’d commit, one was definitely more in demand than the other and could usually command a commensurately higher price, although for projects they dig they often don’t, go figure.
