I am a maintenance tech at a small facility and today I Picked a cheap master lock on a lady’s locker( she lost her key and asked for help). All I know about picking locks I learned from ur videos. I guess what I did would have been called the rake method( if you can call what I did a method) I have alway enjoyed the way locks work and I feel like I have made a small step closer to learning more about how they work with my insignificant accomplishment. Thank you for the education and please keep the content coming

I have seen many wafers that have serrations on the sides. This grabs the edge of the lock body to make it more difficult to pick. It is quite similar to spool pins on the effect that it has. Also, that is probably the factory key with significant pocket wear to remove the logo etc. The code looks factory. Just looked it up, that code does match the cuts of the key. The "machine" marks that you are seeing on the cuts are probably from the disk tumblers with years of use.

counter rotation on a wafer? I would be wanting to open it up and see whats going on.
@RAkers-tu1ey5 жыл бұрын
I had this on an old Yale cast zinc wafer lock. I did open it up, and indeed 2 of the wafers were rounded from using a worn out key... looked like it was "jiggled" and "forced" for a lot of years. 90% of my locks are old, seriously worn, and mostly without keys. Even Master #3's can be tricky picks if they have been abused long enough.

Gates in a wafer lock without a side bar? I believe the wafers are cut narrower in the center and wider at the very top and bottom where they engage the housing. Imaging them to be shaped like the letter X. The slots they fit in in the housing is also beveled. This would add a slight bit of added security by causing counter-rotation which could reset wafers that were already picked and could hold wafers in an over-set position.

So the counterrotation is a good sign. I'll remember that. One thing I finf really difficult is to distinguish the differen pins. But I can still pick. So to me as a beginner there are pin "areas" the 1-2 area. 3-4 area and 5-6. But if I am on five or six? Or if a click is a click or the pick slided off the pin? Who cares? Just keep picking! The last pin opens the lock so I just notice what area I'm in when it opens. Then I relock it and find a way. Like abstract art. Ha ha ha. Bcoz raking. Bcoz jiggling. Bcoz not giving up.

To bad that padlock was ruined by sandblasting. FYI -- ELGIN mostly offered pin tumbler locks as I have several, which I believe were actually made by Independent Lock Company (now ILCO) for ELGIN. Also ELGIN used to be sold by SEARS many, many years ago.

why dont manufacturers make "spool" wafers, then? if all they needed to do was round off the wafer? seems like a decent idea. although i guess if you're making a wafer lock it's probably not meant for high security.
