~UPDATE~ I have never owned or even tried a real Space Echo unit, but I love what they do and I've listened (carefully) to many of the YT demos of them. I do own a BOSS DD-200. I also recently tried an RE-20 for a few days. The RE-20 looks retro-cool, the feature set is complete, and I will agree that there is a mojo to the sound... very realistic. However, the RE-20 is a rather large pedal plus it converts the entire guitar signal to digital. Also, there is a slight loss of dynamics and clarity in the guitar signal, even when dry. And, oddly, the Volume control affects the overall level whether the echo is on or off, with no detent to indicate unity gain. The DD-200 is my choice because it is analog-dry-through, uses audiophile-quality processing, has all the Space Echo head combos, has realistic tape flutter via the mod control, can store presets, has a bunch of other great delays included and does it all in a small form factor. Of course, the RE-20 is a fab pedal in its own right; the echoes sound very convincing and may be fine for many players who are into that specific effect but don't mind the 20's shortcomings.

I used to own an re-20 and placed it in my mixer fx loop for my keyboard rig. I had too many issues with noise and overloading that I’ve went through a bunch of delays since landing on the volante. But really, I just want the volante to sound like the re-20 with its feature set. Can’t believe how many echorec and echoplex style pedals there are and almost no space echo style pedals. Something about the way the it blooms and the way the feedback and speed interact is so musical to me that nothing quite touches it. I do love the volante but I just wish it was a little closer in those ways. Really appreciate you doing this video. The dd-200 doesn’t seem to quite get the features I love of the re-20 just right so I’ll stick with my volante. That said, I agree 100% on a RE-200. If they just updated the body, sound quality, tone sucking issues, input issues and added midi features, I’d buy one in a second. The one other thing is that the warp on the re-20 would get insanely loud so maybe a little compression kicking in towards the peaks of it.

RIP RE-20. Not sure if I want to scoop one up from MF while they still have them or just learn to use my DD200 more. Maybe Boss is coming out with an updated model??

This is a great idea! Im sure lots of people are curious about this shootout. I love this kind of info and I love seeing the evolution of the space echo. I love the space echo but the DD-200 does just fine for me

Yep. I'm also a big fan of shootouts. Not to say that one is good, and one is bad, but to contrast the cool differences.

The DD 200 would be perfect if it had a reverb. I don’t understand why they didn’t put a rvb-delay preset…
@JoelCaseyJonesMusic Жыл бұрын
There isn’t one strictly in that sense, but the terra echo has reverb in the algorithm and if you turn the parameter knob all the way down it is mostly just the delays and reverbs without all the fluttery stuff. Works great for me.

Yeah Joel that's the best compromise and it really does sound amazing like that.

I used to have a similar Eastwood, a Dual Tone. Black with white pick guard. Nice guitar but far more of a rythym guitar than a lead guitar like a strat or a PRS. Must have been the neck radius. I sold it while on a road trip to raise gas money to get to the grand canyon. It fetched 800 on amazon in 2012. I had forgotten i had even listed it. It was just up there as a test of the amazon buy and sell system for a web client. There i was sitting in my van, running out of $ as i had been on the road for almost 8 months and i get a notification that this guitar had just sold on amazon to a kid who was only about 30 miles up the coast. I went and met him at a cafe and his dad bought it for him. I was gifted it in exchange for photography for a recording studio in Canada. Nice sounding instrument, well made, just not right for me at that time and i was travelling with a few of my favourite guitars at that time. I love space echo and all of the boss pedals i've had over the years have been rugged construction and great sound quality. I'm sure the DD200 is stellar also, lots of fun for the whole family :) thx for posting this demo :)

Got both and use them on my Moog Subsequent (not a geetar!). The RE-20 does the better space echo but the DD-200 has more tricks up its sleeve. My fav pedals for soundscaping together with a Strymon BlueSky. On my Korg ARP Odyssey I use a Boss CH1 and that is it folks. On the Arturia DB Impact a DS1.

Carbon copy deluxe into a DD200 both slaved to a single tap is KILLLLLLLLLLLLLER.

The RE20 sounds considerably better (ie more real tape vibe) than the DD20 which sounds pretty digital/fake in comparison. RE20 definitely has a vibe that the DD200 doesn't. I'm bummed, I was hoping to save some space on my board and get way more delay options but still retain a believable Space Echo.
@mattgilbert73474 жыл бұрын
Hard to pick out any major differences. If I just wanted *that* sound, I'd grab the OG. If I wanted a bunch of delays in one pedal, I'd go the DD20, as the man said. The OG also looks cooler. It definitely has a "vibe". I'm still rockin' a DD-5 and a Maxon AD-9 Pro on the board for digital and analog, respectively. The Maxon has a "faux-multi-head" setting that is kinda similar to what you get with the RE-20. If I wanted dark delay+reverb? Vfe Yodeler. Been sitting in my pedal drawer for ages coz it's too precious to put on a board...

I've been waiting for this. I absolutely love the RE-20. The DD-200 is great, but the RE-20 might be my all-time favorite delay pedal. I would also love to see an RE-200, but maybe with a similar aesthetic to the 20, instead of the 200 series. I really like the look of that pedal.

@@TSFAHTPS What inspired you more....the pedals or the baritone?
@TSFAHTPS3 жыл бұрын
Both...I think getting a baritone has been very inspiring...this is my first baritone and it has become one of the first guitars I reach for in the studio! The RE20 is a delay I’ve been using for a long time and it’s a delay I really feel comfortable using...I don’t know if it’s just me but there are some delays that I just don’t get along with...I just can’t seem to find a sweet spot I like, or the right volume for the repeats, they are either too loud or too quiet...but I never seem to have those problems with the RE20 (and lately also the DD8)...it just seems to always seems to sit really well in the mix...and it just sounds great
@MYGAS213 жыл бұрын
@@TSFAHTPS It's not because I'm Greek, but I think your style of playing, using a drone with melody would -how should I say this- feel at home (?) lets say with some traditional Greek scales, like a Sabah, Ousak, Hitzaz, Niavent etc....these are westernised oriental scales adjusted to minor magor chord harmony. From what you played I have a hunch you might like them....

the problem with all these is they are thin modern digital... the guitar quite frankly sounds thin and plastic... string attack doesn't sound natural. Sold my DD200 as it was just a massive tone sucker ! The DD2 is easily the best digital delay... sounds analog...nice fat guitar tone !

Not sure about on his vocals but he uses a copperphone mic through an overdrive pedal. The mic will give that lofi tone adn then crunched up with a pedal
