Theory goes that the reason Smough crushes him is cause Ornstein wouldn't let him join the knights of Gywn. This is backed up by Smough's weapon description when it says "he mixes the bones he crushed into his own food to make up for the sadness of not being a knight." Or something like that. Therefore he probably felt joy crushing the captain

I don't think there was any _definitive_ evidence of any rank within the knights, although let me know if I'm wrong about that. The2b According to the wiki, Ornstein was the first knight of Gywn and thus most likely captain. Nothing is certain on that yet but it also states Smough was denied because of his cannibalistic nature and others can speculate that Ornstein decided to protect Gywnivere with Smough because he was so aggressive and wanted to make sure he kept in line. This is all speculation.

ChronicleOfRyan Like I said before, there can only be a captain if there's rank between the four knights, which is never definitivly stated (perhaps he was the de facto leader?). Even if he is captain, that doesn't necessarily mean he chooses the knights. It also doesn't make sense to me that he'd let someone who he refused to let become a knight guard the princess...
