Great demo. It’s no surprise to anybody that the Big Muff nails the Smashing Pumpkins tone.

I am a big pumpkins guy and I have found that not to be the case, I seem to get much more convincing billy tones with the mxr distortion ii with or without the muff for tons of sustain on leads. A tube screamer before the distortion 2 (I use a made by Mike clone not a vintage mxr distortion 2) and that combination gets the gritty clean up ala drown intro and full up it's all the mid presence you'd want for leads. Running an echo before these fuzzes also gets Billy's post rock bends and haunting drones he's known for. The boss fz-1 has a nice mellow range of gain but has the overblown sound to it just as you max out the fuzz, I highly recommend pushing something into the boss to open its EQ and add a lot of gain, but that sound can be pretty gnarly into a clean amp. I think muffs capture pumpkins in obvious ways but unless you are layering the tracks and optimizing the low end of one and the mids of another and making a super combination of muff sounds layered, but it can be really frustrating hearing that and then trying to recreate it live - especially with a gorilla like jimmy back there. By the way jimmy is among the best.. if you can play guitar like he plays drums then you are on a good track. Dynamics.

@@michaelfowler3187 The only thing I can add to this is that the Big-Muff Op Amp was re-released because it was what Corgan used on Siamese Dream.

@@RIFFpost they are great pedals for the violin sustain stuff especially, I think there are reasons billy went with the bloody finger pedal for years on live stuff but I think if you have the right formula to push the mids in a muff you can definitely getaway with it. If no one has checked out made by Mike pedals in the Uk he makes the dreambox which has a great op amp muff but more importantly for me he has that distortion ii circuit in there to push the muff which is the real trick for the thick feedback and "bloom" that muffs don't really like to do on their own. Keep rockin!!

@@michaelfowler3187 Very nice I will look into the Dreambox. I appreciate your feedback, you got a bunch of knowledge!

I choose the op amp big Muff reissue because, besides being the siamese dream's tone (approved by Billy Corgan himself), its kinda affordable as well, unlike the Boss FZ-1w

I put an fz-2 clone (in the superfuzz mode) in front of a turbo rat and the sound is massive. Luv stacking me fuzzes.

Turbo Rat's are nice, I need to get me one. I can imagine that is a huge sound with that Superfuzz.

@@RIFFpost Yep. Even on its own it sounds great. I've been using it to recreate the tone from the album Am by the band Ovlov. Really rippin music.

What is the chords/chord progression you used in 3:25-4:00? It sounds like its 3 or 4 chords repeated but it sounds kinda cool.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but listening to it sounds kinda like an Amaj - Cmaj - Gmaj, but some variation in the notes used. Sounds like I'm maintaining a C shape (?) while just moving the root note from A to C to G.
