This was my first multi-effects board that I got back in 1999 and I absolutely loved it. For the most part, I created my own patches. I sold it a few years ago to get the ME-80, but this item is still great.

Same for me. 1999... time flies. I just love Boss products. I now use a GT100 or actually a Boss JS10 with the GT100 on board. I really want the GT1000 but I still love the quality of the older products.

I love that unit. I eventually moved onto a GR55 guitar synth about 5 years ago for live gigs. But for good dirty guitar rock distortion in a multi-effects unit, the ME30 is still my favourite and I think I will soon be going back to using it for live gigs again.

It's an enigma for me. I've found it to be useful on certain sounds. People who message me about this video either love it or hate it, no-one ever rubs their chin and says 'yeah it's reeeeeasonably good' ...Anyway, I've heard lots of people who really know what they're talking about give it praise :) GF

@@gearfacts ok, i'll bite. *rubs grey hairs poking through chin* yeah its reasonably good-for the price I guess. I always feel boss multi effects pedals actually trail behind their cheaper alternative, the zoom. Zoom seems to just have meatier distortion and amp modelling in all honesty. Having just spend around 500 on some individual pedals, I am glad I started with multi effects pedals. Individual pedals- for the most part- are a waste of money as of 2023. Tube distortion and amps still have a place as there is no replacement for the sound of a tube it seems ( or they dont pull it off right for the right price). (good) Amp modelers are nice but also pricey and are only an imitation. Analogue distortion pedals have their place because of the OP amp circuit many of them are based on, but if you have a pre-amp installed on your guitar or any sort of active pickup, they are kind unnecessary also. One avenue I haven't really explored yet is the fully is the amplifier emulating software available. The free stuff is hit and miss while I am reluctant to spend 100s on trying some of these emulators when I could actually be getting some hardware with lasting resale etc. But still, I think hard circuits such as tubes and analog op amps will always have a place, but these multieffects systems, especially the ones with individual pedals you can stomp on for each effect are a good, cheap replacement for a private user or even small time gigger when couples with a solid guitar and amp. This particular boss model might be showing its age though considering it is, by some reports, over 20 years old now? No way should this thing be selling for 200 AUD. Not even 100 AUD, its an obsolete toy that can barely compete with 50 dollar chinese imitations.

I actually had 2 of these back in the day. I absolutely loved it back then because I could experiment with all these tones. It really helped develop my ear. That being said, while the presets were mostly bad, there were some good tones if you make your own. I'd buy one for the nostalgia but I would recommend almost literally anything else for others.

haha well put! Yes I gigged with one too and was always only partially satisfied. The best part I thought was turning the flanger settings right up to extremes which would generate some interesting synth tones that I used in the studio. Didn't sound like a normal flanger, it seemed to enter another realm, like a transmission from the aliens' mothership.

This much maligned multi-effects unit from Boss is hours of fun for very little outlay! Of course it will NEVER (and most multi-effects units, except for the most recent ones) replace boutique effects pedals, which cost a lot, it does have some fun combinations of "Amp" and "Pedal" effects, that can be exchanged in a limited way, with each other. I found by reducing the fairly extreme distortion models, turning the gain down, and then putting the output of this unit through a valve pre-amp, you CAN get a good (or better) tone from it! It's cheap, fun and don't expect too much from it, I for one I'm glad I own this, and they are (possibly rightfully) getting harder to find now!
@gearfacts
@gearfacts 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment, and I agree that you can get a better sound by adding other good quality gear and but optimising the setting to suit your instrument. Having reviewed the entire Boss line though, I've found that this pedal is consistently one of the lower performers. There are several other Boss models that sound great without pressing users to boost their signal with per/post equipment. Having said that, though, certain pedals will just naturally bond well with certain guitars and you might just be in that fortunate category with the ME-30 :) Gearfacts

Still have mine. If basing it to the factory preset sounds, someone may find it quite basic and awful but once you made use of its reverb, delay, pitch/chorus/tremolo/flanger, pedal placement/functions and the most interesting part is the Ring modulation. With the right tweak you can almost emulate the EVH "Vroom and Squeel" sounds. The "cons" , it uses small rubber push buttons not knobs, lcd is pain to read otherwise its a time classic.

Ok, let me make it real clear(shot out to Stephen A. Smith) : this unit can do A LOT. Sounds way better then what you are hearing in this video (no disrespect!) IT IS ALL IN THE HANDS AND The EARS. Sure this is old technology (97!!), Hard to read LCD and molded plastic..yikes..right? Guess what-it will NEVER Quit. Made in Japan and will fight your wars like a loyal samurai. The expression pedal, while cannot be compare to anything Clyde or Crybaby, is multi functional and can cover a lot of grounds as shown on this video. The mods and delays can give you that old school feel that the newer fancy multi effects cannot touch. And I had many of them which are great..all the Digitech, Korg, Zooms, pods, ME, GT and what have you-and I love them all. But for the life of me, this old plastic TANK, has a very special feel to it. Never have thought that any multiple effect can have a “feel” to begin with..this one does. I am a pro player, making a leaving playing and teaching for 30 years IN NYC since 98’..this ME took me back to the time that boss used to make their early DR series out of all.. it’s almost you have the guitarists edition of DR-5 or DR550...simply:classic.

Gearfacts lol..naa, no need for that..I guess I’m having a vintage toys fetish..I probably wouldn’t take it to a gig, and I have few favorites in my collection anyway, but one could pair the ME30 with a good old analog distortion or overdrive. The presets are pretty awful but the mods/Dly/Reverbs are pretty cool. The biggest drawback of this unit is the lack of Knobs. Editing a patch could be an excruciating experience at the beginning.Not a doubt..I also find that the aux volume output can be pretty low if I do a quiet Headphones practice..at least with my now obsolete iPhone 4 which I use as a drum machine.

The trick to making this thing sound decent today is to pair it with some sort of analog/boost/compressor/gain/overdrive/tube pedal (Blues Driver?!) U can really get away with it under any type of situation doing that with maybe a wah-wah also. Since the sweep from the wah(foot pedal)really ain't that great.(maybe that's the weakness of it, along with the output volume) This kinda defeats the purpose of havin' a multi-efx stompbox but that setup could sorta work well in a pinch for live or studio work, when the margins might be budgetably tight or u just don't wanna lug around six or seven pedals when this thing with a couple of others could do the job adequately enough folks thanx
@gearfacts
@gearfacts 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with that, all it needs is a bit of drive. I love the chorus effect too, you can push it past normal extremes to create some nice freaky synth tones.

Don't think this is a fair video, you have the amp sim on so presumably you are recording direct rather than through an amp. It is not an amp modeller, that amp sim is just meant to make it slightly better through headphones. I had one, it sounded good, the effects sounded the same as standalone boss effects, the distortions were analog because digital wasn't there yet. Compare like for like, this against the equivalent boss stand alone pedals through a real amp and it perfumes well

I bought one of these about 18 years ago when I got my first guitar and knew fuck all about pedals. At the time it cost me about the equivalent of €300 today. I haven't played guitar in almost as long but gave it a try when I bought my new guitar. When I first bought it I thought it was awesome but didn't have a clue how to use it. Using it now it just sounds awful. It sounds tiny and overly digital. The only good use I can find for it now is to give me an idea of what kind of pedals I'd like to get to suit the style of music I like to play (classic rock). Tone City make some nice pedals so I think I'll go with them

To each his own, yes it sounds terrible through whatever you're playing it through then through my phone. I have one, is from '97 that's 26 years and it took me years to learn to tweak it but i get some killer tones from it. I'd recommended turning down the output and controls ect.... Like you've already done, then way more down, it's sounds better that way Yes they're pre-programmed but you can reprogram them. anyways it's been Boss for my tone. Don't recommend it for playing outdated blues, not a great match

I have a ME-30 , only use 4 settings through a mixer straight in to a computer and it sounds way way better than this , this is not a good review of the sounds of the ME-30 , sounds like he is using a little Gorilla amp with a blown speaker . my settings are only combinations of two , like delay and distortion,reverb and chorus,etc. I do sometimes play my acoustic guitars on the acoustic setting.
@gearfacts
@gearfacts 6 жыл бұрын
Some people have gotten good results from it. However, I've reviewed over 100 multi effects systems though, and most of them will give better results immediately, with no changes to settings. So it's great that it's working nicely with your equipment, but it's appropriate for me as a reviewer to show how it sounds directly from a studio monitor system using the amp simulator. It is, therefore, an accurate review that serves the viewer correctly.
@FL-BEACH-MAN
@FL-BEACH-MAN 6 жыл бұрын
I am not knocking your review , yes there are many multi-effects that blow the ME-30 away. But what I pointed out for about $30 and little work you get a few usable noises out of it. I own many Multi-effects units worth up $ 600 , but not everyone needs 150 different effects . Not only that , but the ME-30 ,imho is only good for being portable and plugging into a computer with ease. Now , just so I can keep up with your reviews or whatever else you have on YT. I will gladly subscribe to your channel. I am a musician with 50 years experience and love everything that involves Guitars in any way , shape or form.

I got one at a rummage sale a number of years ago... and decided to dust it off yesterday and tinker with it. It did not come with the manual. I figured the settings were either way over my head, or it was complete garbage. Hard to say without the manual... but I will say I didn’t really like the sound. As you’d mentioned.. more of that “indie waaaay out there synth” stuff you see at like a music festival. Not for me. And back on the shelf it went

And it should be pluged to an amp for better results. This part is actually pretty obvious... Why would you demo a pedal using anything but an amp anyway!? So people, just quit bitchin' about how awful it sounds, specially if you don't know how to use this ancient pedal (it's about 20 years old now) properly. It's just not rocket science.

Im watching the video. There are some super sick, almost so fraudulent pitch bendings that are sooo corny, but yet, if you want to buy a pedalboard for a price and for THE WRONG SOUNDS IT CAN PRODUCE, then its a good buy. Sonic freaks might squeeze some fkd up sound from this thing. Actually ( and I dont know if it is the way you miked the pedalboard when you demoed it... they sounds sound tiny. The distorsions are kinda cheesy. If they are editable, then everyone might have having one of these. Actually, Im gonna pay a 100 dollars for one of these (here in BA its a little money). Ok, end of my lecture. Some fucked up sounds in the Me 30.
@gearfacts
@gearfacts 7 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. This pedal is best used for the weird stuff. As an extra, you can push the chorus and flanger effects out to extremes where they become something entirely different - weird ethereal space effects. Very interesting. But for classic guitar sounds - noooooo!

omg it gives you so many options and different effect sounds. I didn't even realize til like 8 years later that you can alter and create your own effects + distortion, save and name them. If you spend enough time with it you'll get the sound you're looking for. But definitely works best with a Gibson. I had a melody maker and it sounded like real 70s-ish zeppelin studio quality
