From the focused punch of an American 6L6 to the juicy sag of a British EL84, power tubes play an important part in an amplifier's signature tone and response. And with the BOSS Nextone series, capturing the magic of four major output tube types is as easy as twisting a dial. These combo amps feature the latest iteration of BOSS's Tube Logic technology - the same building blocks from which BOSS's Katana and Blues Cube lines were built. In the Nextone Artist, every choice of output tube re-voices the entire circuit to perform more like your favorite classics. Breakup and bias, sparkle and sag - every type imparts its own characteristics, giving you cranked-up tube glory at bedroom listening levels.

If there was a GRAMMY for "BEST PRESENTER" I am of the belief that Mitch Gallagher should be the winner! Mitch, you leave no stone unturned! Not only is there a verbal description but a playing sample is usually attached so we can get an honest representation as to what the gear will or will not do. Thank you Sir! Can't believe they managed to make so many settings possible. Couldn't really hear it well because of shorts notes but amps seems pretty useful. Knowing many tube amps i would say such amp is great for beginners, good for practicing or when one can't turn the volume up. I wouldn't use it live or when wanting to hear or feel tubes, for sure it has place in the studio because of so many possibilities. It has that "clean, 2D" sound with headroom and dynamics not typical for tubes, although pretty close. Great job from Boss's engineers, respect!

When it comes to product demos. there are 3 people that I look forward to hearing and seeing. They are Mitch Gallagher,(Sweetwater Music) Tom Quayle (Dawson's Music) and Darrel Braun (Independent). I chose these guys because these men have something in common and that is clarity. No B.S. Just pure product! Perhaps completely unbiased! And that's just what I look for in product demonstrations. Great video Mitch! I look forward to getting one of these amps when they come out. BTW, these amps look really great too!!

@8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
Too Late They are analog. The signal path from input to output is never modeled, nor is there A/D --> D/A. It’s solid-state, not tube, but the power stage feels very tube-like because of the Tube Logic technology. Tube Logic isn’t modeling, it’s technology that watches the impedance of the speaker and continuously adjusts the power-amp to control the sag and saturation, and works nicely. The delay and reverb are digital and so there is A/D -> D/A occurring on the wet path, but that’s not the main signal path or sound. The Stage, which I have, is impressive. At loud volume, above the 0.5 watt setting, it starts to react very much like my boutique tube amps. Yeah, the tone still sounds somewhat like a good distortion pedal, but it sure feels right. I like it better than my modelers.

It’s the latest iteration of the Tube-Logic technology, without the individual identity module. Instead the power section emulates the four tube types and the editor gives access to enough controls and amp characteristics that the amp can sound pretty much like other amps. I like my Stage, and am glad I got it.

I like amps that don't model, that don't pretend to be other amps, and that don't have a ton of bells and whistles.

If this was around six months ago, I might have bought this instead of a Blues Cube. While the BC is great, this amp has a compressor and delay, which for me, means that I could easily use it without any pedals once I set up a custom preset. I hope Boss ports the editors to Android and iOS. I always have my phone handy at the gig, and it would be nice to switch presets or tweak my current preset.

Christopher Mayer While that’s a good solution it also means more weight, gear and clutter that duplicates what is already built-in. The Stage is an especially nice grab-n-go amp, so being able to travel light and access the built-in effects would be nice.

Sweetwater demos are among the best.. I would say however that the comments about the power section (3:40) are misleading.. the comments would be correct IF this was a tube power amp, but it isnt. Those knobs simply change software parameters in the "pre-amp" to mimic the sound and reaction as if it had a tube power amp.. the power amp in this thing is a power brick with no inherent character..

Guaranteed... just watched this vid. Mitch does a killer detailed demo here, and really shows off how Roland completely nailed this amp series with all the features you could possibly need or want. Super psyched. Just called and pre-ordered two of the smaller ones. They will kill for a super easy tight stereo rig for, solo, duo, or trio gigs! For what it's worth, always been a huge Roland fan. Been using cubes since they were released. The original cubes were the poor man's Boogie at the time they launched, in that they had multiple gain stages and a master and still sound great to my ear. I predicted they would sell a ton of them and almost 40 years later the line is still around? Pretty impressive. I had two 100 watt original cubes running in stereo, always felt a bit funny about using them, but they worked great for me. I lost that weird feeling when I saw John Abercrombie use one on a gig and it sounded great. I talked with him for a moment about it and he had the same feeling I did, a quiet "Holy Crap... these sound amazing!" The original orange cube 20 is a personal favorite practice amp & great with effects, super flat and just sound great with any ax. I use two original cube 20's in stereo for my front room low volume practice rig. Roland does it again.

Hello! If you're coming from a Hot Rod Deluxe, then I would definitely recommend getting the Artist version of that amp. Volume and headroom will be very comparable for you. @8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
The Stage will keep up a good volume in a small club but it wouldn’t be punishingly loud. Mine at 20 watts does well keeping up with a Blues Jr. That same Blues Jr. with a Twin Reverb in a stereo set up had me turning up the Stage’s output to 40 watts, which still was able to be heard pretty well. The single 12” is limiting and plugging into a 2x10” or 2x12” cabinet would help move more air. Even adding another 1x12” cabinet would help. The Artist is more powerful but moving air is important as an amp with twice the speaker area is louder than the equivalent wattage with half the area.

The amps have no modeling, they’re analog through to the speaker. There is a DSP that monitors the impedance of the speaker and adjusts how the power-amp section works, all on the fly. I think that’s how the amp gets such a good tube-like feel. It’s impressive and very different feeling from old-school solid state and even modelers. My Helix and AX-8 don’t feel as good.

Just 4 patches to save? Limited effects? I have a Flextone II combo in my closet from 20 years ago that's more full featured than this.. I don't get it.. Sure the Nextone sounds great, but why does it have to be crippled with limited features?
@8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
Four patches? No, it comes with twelve different presets stored, and you can edit and save them. Its downside is that only one preset is in the custom channel and you can’t switch from the knobs, only from the editor. I had a Flextone II combo also and got rid of it because it was nothing like playing a real tube amp. The Nextone is a very different animal and feels very much like a tube amp. It’s “crippled” because more features cost more money and Boss had a particular section of the market the were after. I think they did a great job with it. Think about this: In a few years they will drop Katana, and I suspect the Nextone, and come out with something that incorporates even better sound along with banks of custom and editable sounds. They already know how to do the editing and banks because of the GT systems, and they know that the modelers are going to make that sort of flexibility a requirement. Sticking with the four tube types in the power section covers the basis for lots of amps, and then some A/D and D/A on a “wet” or “effects” signal path that can be blended with the normal Nextone sound, would give people the best of both worlds. I’m just imagineering but it seems quite doable.

I'm basically in the same camp. I have a Katana 100 that I really like, but I use two of the amp sounds and reverb. Brown and lead are fun, but I've literally never used them at a gig. Better low and mid gain amp tones with an ability to hit nice American style clean tones sounds amazing to me

I say defer your decision if at all possible. I love my Katana Artist precisely because I don’t have nor want pedals. This Nextone is likely only the first in a new series. There’s so much evolution right now with amps and modeling you might see other manufacturers also introducing interesting models.

Plug a single-coil in and if there’s EMI present the guitar is noisy. That doesn’t mean that the amp suddenly becomes noisy, it’s just amplifying a noisy guitar. At full gain and full volume every amp is noisy and hisses, some more than others. The Nextone is quieter than most.

In this day and age, it makes more sense to use a cheap refurbished laptop, a cheap Audio interface, a used FCB1010 and used PA speakers to gig or practice on free/cheap modelling software. If anything gets stolen or broken, its cheap to replace or have a backup handy. You can backup or port your setups easily from one laptop to another. I personalty use NI Guitar RIg 5 with 2Notes Torpedo Wall of sound and a few other plugins (VC76, spaceship delay, Lexicon reverb). However, if you want a unique signature tone with an organic response customized to your taste, buy a soldering iron, a multi-meter and a tube amp kit. Build and tweak those classic amps yourself and get a few different speakers / cabs. Leave the expensive boutique amps in the shop or in the studio... rent them if when you are ready to record your hits for posterity.

@shawnglass108
@shawnglass108 5 жыл бұрын
Dawn Russell , you can call it whatever you like. It is made to imitate other amps and things that the amp doesn’t actually have. Namely power tubes. It is imitating power tubes but has no power tubes. Analog and digital are both a form of modeling. This has all been done before by other modeling amps.
@8sigreg
@8sigreg 5 жыл бұрын
Shawn Glass “modeling” has multiple meanings with amps and design. The Nextone has a DSP and uses it to monitor the speaker’s impedance as it changes when reproducing the guitar signal and adjust the power-amp circuit to give the effects of sag and bias adjustments on tube amps. They don’t need to do A/D and D/A conversion of the guitar signal to accomplish that. So it’s not modeling in that sense. They do “model”, or imitate or emulate or simulate tubes because the power-amp feels like a good tube amp as far as sag and compression goes, and the tone stack and presence set by each power-amp circuit gives the sound of the various tube-types. The sound gets fatter as the volume on the guitar rolls up and that gives us a tube-like experience too. There’s no A/D of the guitar signal there either according to their docs, and no modeling of amps digitally. There are used tube amps found in the price range, but you would need several different ones to cover the sounds the Nextone does well; at volume the Tweed Lead, British Lead and Modern Lead sounds are pretty believable, both in sound and feel. And with tubes you’d have to buy a really good attenuator to allow reducing the volume and still maintain the sound. I was very skeptical about them. I’ve never heard a solid-state amp I liked, and never heard a modeler that was equal to my tube amps, and thought a long time about the pluses and minuses of these amps before even going to play one. The first time I couldn’t turn it up and wasn’t overly impressed but needed to know how it’d sound at stage volume, went to another store and turned it up loud at 20 watts and was very impressed with how it behaved with my Strat. Other people were coming over asking to plug into it because it sounded so good. I took that amp home. I’ve been playing a long time, and have used a lot of classic and boutique tube amps and am picky as hell when it comes to my equipment and sound. My Strats with Raw Vintage RV-50 and RV-60 pickups, and my humbucker equipped PRS guitars sound great through it. This amp is a good addition to my Mesa and ToneKing amps. I recommend them.

Is this analog?
@too--late
@too--late 5 жыл бұрын
No, it's equipped with a USB connection, and its settings can be managed by a software via a computer. The power amp is analog. But the preamp is digital. It's like a Katana with the choice of 4 solid state power amp "filters". And with "TubeLogic" which is according to Boss : "amp-speaker interaction (...) fine-tuned with DSP for very precise adjustment". (DSP = Digital)

Yes, it’s analog. There’s a DSP used to help the power-amp control the speaker, but no modeling occurs in the guitar signal path, even in the preamp, despite the comment above. Boss is very clear about that.

You will find it hard to find a tube amp that will compete for the same price. The tube amp will have cheap tubes and components and won’t have to feel. I tried following that path many times, buying many different tube amps chasing the sound of a ToneKing SkyKing , having them modified, and finding nothing came close. My amp tech finally told me to save my time and money and just buy a SkyKing. I did and love it. I followed that up with a Mesa Lonestar Special, and then a ToneKing Imperial Mk II, all are very respected amps for the sound. I love them and use them often but can’t justify taking them on vacation so I looked for something light and small without tubes, and picked the Stage. These are good amps and should be given serious consideration as alternatives to tube amps under $1000.

I just got my Nextone Stage. After fiddling with it for over an hour I'm a little disappointed. I set up the lead channel the way I wanted it, and saved it by holding down the channel select switch, then I set up the clean channel (6L6 tubes) and saved it. The amp does not seem to be saving the EQ settings. I'm using EL34's for the lead with the gain at 12 noon. The lead tones in all the tube selections seemed a bit scooped and are a little raspy.even with the treble setting at zero and the middle at noon. The cleans are very nice, but again, when I switch back and forth between lead and clean my EQ isn't what I saved. The manual is pretty useless and I have not connected the amp to my computer just yet. If I don't get this figured out it's going back to the store. I had high hopes.

@NoiseFeedMusic shared EQ is yet another good reason for having returned it. Somebody is going to love the amp, but it was a poor fit for me. The channel select switch doesn’t save the settings, it switches to the custom preset defined by the editor and saved to the amp. The docs for the amp and editor both say this: “[CH SELECT] button * Switches between the CLEAN channel and the LEAD channel. Hold down this button for one second or longer to select CUSTOM mode. In CUSTOM mode, sound settings can be made only using the dedicated software.” and: “Nextone Editor is editor software that lets you create your own personalized sounds by using the Nextone’s CUSTOM mode to edit detailed settings for the preamp, power amp, and effects. You can create different settings for the CLEAN channel and LEAD channel.” The editor is where the real power and flexibility of the amp lies. The various presets are editable and the changes can be stored in the custom setting or remembered for later reuse. That there is no way to access all the stored presets from the foot pedal or the knobs is disappointing but the individual presets are very believable and I just run on whichever I have currently loaded.
