When Boss announces a new product, the guitar world pays attention. This time around, they're throwing their hat in to the ring for good old classic amplifier tones. Introducing the Nextone series of amplifiers. John and Jack put the brand new Artist edition through its paces and uncover the variety of tones available from this deceptively simple 1x12 combo. The Nextone accomodates players of all abilities, from plug-and-players to trivial-tweakers. Taking the amp out of the box and firing it up reveals how simple it is to navigate the tones of four purpose-designed authentic
'power amp' settings, each designed to give the user the ultimate recreation of your favourite power section valve-types, with 80 watts of Class A/B power to back it up. The amplifier can be tailored to any environment thanks to its in-built power scaling options, allowing it to sound its best in your practice room or on the stage. Don't be fooled, this amp will have no trouble in keeping up with your classic valve amps for tone and volume.
Add to that all of that a compliment of tasteful classic effects, an all-purpose customisable footswitch, effects loop & options to run external speaker cabinets of your choice and you have one versatile rig that'll have no problem fitting on the back seat of your car.
We'll also delve in to Boss' editing software and showcase just how simple it is to jump around the features of the amplifier in real time. Leaving no stone unturned, the full capacity of this versatile package is unleashed!

I love these tone snobs who complain about the solid-state overdrive, then kick on their solid state Klons, Tube Screamers, or OCDs to get the drive into their super clean 50w tube amps. As for it being 'brittle sounding', the EQ on this recording does sound a little thin on it's own (on clean or drive sounds) but that's A) a personal preference thing, B) can be altered in person, and C) is a better sound to sit in a full band mix anyway. I mostly use small (13-15w) tube amps and pedals but, in some circumstances (live mostly) I run a GT-100 direct into the board. The sounds either way are great... the difference is in the feel (the way the amp responds to my playing.) The beauty of these more recent Boss offerings is that they're getting closer and closer to that squishy tube response and feel.

A bad sounding tube amp makes distortion pedals sound bad. A great tube amp that already has the sound the pedals try to recreate saves time, money and frustration because distortion pedals aren’t needed then. A great tube amp is expensive but worth every penny because it’s SO fun to play.

I dig it. Feels like Boss/Roland's answer to the Orange Crush series. Happy to see alternatives to tube amps that are aiming to be quality analog solid-states as opposed to cheap digital garbage. Still not better than tube, but definitely tempting especially when you consider general ease of use and lighter weight.

Thanks for the fairly thorough demo. If I would have known about this amp coming out, I might have waited and not bought the Blues Cube Artist, though I have no regrets - it sounds great for what I do and is light and reliable, so far, though I did have to replace the AC power plug. I really like the power amp choices, 3 reverb and delay types, and the choice of boost or compression, which is nice for clean sounds. I could actually gig without pedals, though I hope they port the editor to Android and iOS, so people can tweak at the gig, though without blue tooth, I'm not holding my breath. Also, thanks for clearing up the pronunciation "Next Tone", not "Next One" or "Nextonee" :-)

Somebody posted asking if this was like a Line 6 amp, but the comment is now gone. I can assured you that it is not! Line 6 is the Fiat of amplification. They look great and go fast until the warranty runs out, then they quit running and cannot be repaired. Been there too many times with the amps and Variax guitars myself. BOSS has always produced tank-like sturdiness. I'm definitely interested in this amp!

LOL! I apologize. I guess I watch too much Scotty Kilmer. I had a Flextone III with the long board that quit working three times. The problem in the first two were corroded PC connectors between circuit boards. The third was never figured out. Our other guitar player (who had been using a Line 6 Duo) insisted I sell the III to him. He ended up sending it to Line 6 twice. The last time they returned it they said they had done all they could do. That was five years ago and it's still gathering dust in his music room. My Variax 500 rarely worked. I had a Spider 30 as a practice amp and it quit after about an hour. Took that one back to Guitar Center. Even my MM4 quit working. I baby my equipment, so hard use was NOT the issue.

Boss have come pretty close,,,if you can't dial in a decent tube tone with the software and the panel settings it isn't the fault of the amplifier. A lot of people are gigging the katanas and leaving the tubers at home. Anybody who says these are just practice amps don't know what they are talking about. This is the future of amplification, light,versatile,and dependable unlike tube amps. I love my tubers but they are touchy and expensive to maintain, i have pedals more expensive than katana's,lol, so if it somehow gets damaged at a gig or stolen i am not out thousands of dollars.
@kimhansen6384
@kimhansen6384 5 жыл бұрын
@@ericsmodsandgear8098 A lot of people are gigging a lot of things, but here we discus what sounds good, and in my opinion a Katana does not sound good enough. You can get a decent crunch and dirty sound, but not a decent cleanish sound, so it also depends a lot on which type of music you are playing. Life is one big compromise. A lot of people also plays the cheapest Squier guitars, plays shitty songs and date ugly girls - I dont. That´s the difference. Right now I use a Marshall 4010 1x12" combo. It was more expensive than the Katana, but sounds much better.

@ericsmodsandgear8098 5 жыл бұрын
@@kimhansen6384 In order to get good cleans with the katana you need to adjust the global eq in the tone studio and also use the vintage cab setting. I use a blues driver in front of the pre amp with the knob set barely on for a little breakup and it sounds great. Is it 100% spot on with my tube amps cleans? No, but it sounds damn close. For a solid state amp that cost a fraction of what my tube amps did i would call it a win. I've been playing music and owning amps longer than most of you have been alive and went through the tube snobbery stage myself,,and thought anything other than an rca black plate was shit and spent a lot of money loading my amps with 200 dollar 6l6 nos tubes. Now i just plug in and play,,,SS amps are getting better,,tube amps are yesterdays news.

Even the solid state distorted tone is getting good. I have a tube now that I like, but I have to admit, I'm really drawn to the Nextone for a few reasons. 1 - No more tubes, 2- Boss tones (I also have a Boss GX100), 3-Similar software to the Katana and GX, so already very familiar with it and 4- can probably just grab another foot switch and leave the GX at home. @igorzavalnyi5341
@igorzavalnyi5341 5 жыл бұрын
I think the thing is that the amp circuit is analog, but the switching is done using digital equipment. That means, that internal switches and relays are connected to digital boards instead of analog switchers and knobs. Similar solutions have been on the market for a while, e.q. Marshall JMP-1 that is controlled using midi messages.
@too--late
@too--late 5 жыл бұрын
@@igorzavalnyi5341 With the information that arrives about this new amp, I think I understand what it is. In fact, the preamp is digital. But the power amp is analog. Nothing special, it's the same with the Katana or even the Roland Cube. But, the special feature of the Nextone is that the power amp contains 4 solid state circuits, therefore analog, which color the sound differently. As this amp has an effects loop, it's possible to connect directly to the return of the loop with a pedal, and choose a type of power amp. This option doesn't exist on the Katana, or even less on the Cube XL or GX that don't have an effects loop.
@ticklemy12string
@ticklemy12string 5 жыл бұрын
@@too--late this is a hot topic amongst amp builders. I've heard Bruce Egnater talk about the preamp being a bigger influence over the amp then the power amp tube types. If you buy into Bruce's theory then all the solid state power amp shaping would be much less effective then the modeling of the preamp.

Gary Moseley hi, I don’t know if it would help because I have not performed live in a long time, but I have a 40 watt Mustang and a tube deluxe reverb, and I can dial in a very very close tone on both, and the Mustang is able to hold the tone I dial in and shake the windows pretty well! Other benefits 1) no tubes to randomly fail 2) once it’s dialled in it will always sound the same. 3) if it’s hot or cold it will not randomly change tone 4) if the electricity is not running within specific cycles tube amps crap out. Solid state doesn’t care. 5) solid state amps are more reliable. 5) good solid state amps are dynamic, responsive and will sound great. 6) you can turn a 120 watt solid state amp down to whisper quiet levels for bedroom practice and still sound good. Try doing that with a 100 watt tube amp it’s not pretty. 7) if you like tube amps but don’t like the downsides of owning one give the Blues cube, Orange crush pro, Nextone amps a try you’ll be surprised. I prefer these over tube amps.

The audio path is completely analog using analog circuits and does not go through AD DA conversion including the output jacks. It can still have digital controls that manipulate the electrical signals, voltages and frequencies, but the waveforms remain completely analog and they are never sampled through an analog to digital to analog conversion process through a IC chip or DSP. Hope that helps.

This is begging for a shootout against the Peavey Bandit, Orange CR60C, Tech 21 Trademark 60 and... Award-Session Blues Baby. I do like the idea of both reverb and delay in an amp. A tuner would be good, too as with that configuration, I'd never need to take any pedals to gigs. Just a guitar, lead and amp. Also, I'd like to know how it performs in a proper gig, and finally, how much background noise/hiss it generates.

@@johncartelli That will have to be a separate shootout, as the amps I chose are all analogue, whereas the Code 100 is digital. I have owned them all and still have the Tech 21 trademark 60. The Boss Katana 100 212 which I also own beats them all in my opinion. It's lightweight pushes tons of air in a live setting and sounds surprisingly good. Granted I use a pedal board into the amp and I'm not relying on the drive channels but I think they're good enough to use if you tweek them on the tone editor app. The orange crush CR 60 was my least favorite but still a decent amp. I did not feel it would hold up in a live setting at all. The Tech 21 Trademark 60 is loud and can hang in a gig but it sounds very boxy and I was never truly satisfied with it. I do keep it in my trunk as a backup and it's great because you can run it direct into the board via the XLR out and the amp still works as a monitor. If you can find a katana 100 212 give it a whirl I think you'll be very surprised.

I have read every comment so far, but I have to say I like this amp and the concept...light and don't have to necessarily carry a pedal board to a gig. I like the way it sounds. I kind of wish they offered the 80 watt with 2 speakers, but I know the big selling point is the weight. So I'm not sure how much weight another speaker would add, but you could take another speaker cab along with this amp....so that's an option. But for me, I really like this amp

I'm intrigued by this amp (and the Blues Cube Hot) for several reasons. The feature that I am most looking for after good tone, is the attenuation. Try finding a tube amp with a built in attenuator. They exist but they are easily twice the price of this amp (Tone King Gremlin, for example). Of course, you could always buy a tube amp and a stand alone attenuator but again, that drives the cost through the roof. One of my favourite tube amps it the Fender Princeton but I won't buy one because I would have to leave the volume on 1 for fear of having my neighbours call the police. No, there is definitely a market for this type of amp and in reality, they do sound quite good.
@tdunster2011

Completely Wrong. I have a 28w Class A 1x12 Tube Combo and at any volume from a whisper to a roar it will destroy any of these amps. All you need is a Boost pedal and a tube screamer / overdrive and they are very usable at low volumes. Attenuators that actually work cost more than most amps as you said - but the reality is pedals do it just as well if not better for a lot less money on a good quality amp.

Any solid state amp can be turned down to bedroom levels. The power attenuation isn’t really needed because it’s got master volume. The beauty of solid state is the tone isn’t affected by changes in master volume. Try turning Down a 100 watt valve amp to bedroom levels its grim.

@NoiseFeedMusic I think you are wrong regarding th output stage. I use a modelling amp with a tube output stage, and i face the same problem. The problem is in the DSP front end, that is better at processing signals in a lower frequency range (low on high frequency harmonics) vs distorted sounds, that has a lot of upper harmonics added --> this means that the amp model (which is just a simplified mathematical model) fail when 1) upper harmonics is removed in the anti-aliasing filters 2) the models for handling upper harmonics are insufficient
@jbax69
@jbax69 5 жыл бұрын
Hello. Very interesting comment on that topic since everybody talks about the speaker or power stage. Actually I had a stage for 2 weeks and got the problem with high frequencies even with the headphone output. A friend talked also about the dsp. Since you seem to know well that topic do you think it is because of bad quality dsp? Could Boss correct some aspects with a new firmware? I really loved the clean sounds and could get from the nextone and also some using pedals (I actually could get nice results with high gain pedals with no apparent high freq issue).
@drmaawenz
@drmaawenz 5 жыл бұрын
@@jbax69 If you are lucky it is a firmware problem that can be easily fixed, I doubt it since it is a common problem among many manufacturers. The DSP might be fine, don't know, but as you probably know, the more complex calculations a computer has to run the more resources are required. To counteract latency (delay) some models have been optimized for speed omitting some details "most people are not gonna hear", but some do. Just like a CD vs a mp3 file. :) Those, who are must successful to hear the imperfections are "bedroom guitarists", since imperfections are very noticeable when using high grade headphones (like Beyerdynamic DT 770 etc.). In a band situation those imperfections are hardly noticeable since the cymbals would drown them out. Finally there is a risk that the simplified model doesn't cope with the complex signal that the player is feeding into the amp, and it sounds like crap - this is not very likely since people who spend a shitload of money on pedals, usually buys a more traditional amplifier.

Last 3rd , mixed , chords with leads, and if you must add pedals , do it in that last 3rd .

The amp market is getting quite confusing. After the priceless boutique amps that only a happy few can afford (and maintain), now come the solid state amps with valve tones. Boss has already come out with the Blues Cube, the Katana and now this one. Blackstar, Line 6, Peavey are also present in this market among others. Nothing against it: I have tried lots of different amps but not any of them came close to a valve amp but for the VOX Pathfinder 15R. The price is affordable though, with a lot of tweaking available through a computer for those who like it... I prefer to spend more time playing rather than moving cursors on an interface. I'm an old-school guy who believes that nothing replaces a nice, playable guitar with good pickups, plugged into a well conceived amp with volume, gain, tone moving air through an efficient speaker. Period. My 2ç Rock on ! \m/
