Does the Boss Nextone Stage sound like a tube amp? That is the question we answer in this video.
A proper vintage amp collector plays the Nextone Stage in each amp mode:
- 6v6 to sound like a Fender Deluxe
- 6L6 to sound like a Fender Super Reverb
- EL84 for a Vox AC15
- EL34 for the vintage Marshall amp tone

I found a Vox Valvetronix AD30vt for $75. Liked it enough to get an AD50vt w/the foot pedal for $160. That was 1.5, 1 years ago. I watch them on different sites, they’ve gone up a bit. So, what I saw here was a continuing improvement in modeling (amps, tubes, whatevs). Good video. Educational. Keep it up.👍

On these solid state amps, if they put some background noise on them I think more people would have a harder time telling. It's actually closer to the new Nextone Special then it is the Stage or Artist. Very little video I can find here about this amp, but every single one of them have shown how great it is. I play through a solid state orange, set up totally clean most of the time, I have cheap Klone set to light gain/edge of break up, a JHS Kilt set up to a heavier crunch, and a Blackarts Tone works Black Forest fuzz dimed and they are also touch sensitive. Years ago I didn't understand what that meant and figuring that out was... a light bulb moment. Learning to feel that type of change and control with the volume pot and the pick is fantastic.

I'm beginning to think that I'm a little different. I'm in my 50'sand am not hung up on the nostalgia thing. I have or have had at some point most of the amps people seem to want to try and emulate. I also remember all the maintenance that went along with the old stuff. I like getting new things because I want new sounds. If I go out and get a new truck, I'm not going to try and make it work like my 1979 Datsun. I also am trying to get as far away from loud as I can get. I have had to hear loud amps and stages most of my life and loud is very over-rated. I have found that a good target volume level is where the sound can be heard well but two people standing a few feet apart can still have a conversation.

Hi Dylan ! Great review (as usual) for an amp that doesn’t seem to get much attention / love on the web. It’s too bad you didn’t check out / shortly demonstrate the software where you can tweek the tone / response. It’s a great feature and there is no need to keep the amp on the computer all the time. I did it just once, and enjoy. And it’s a great pedal platform too (having an all analog signal path) I have it and use it mostly at home, where the output selector is great to play at lower volumes (0.2 watt) without upsetting neighbours. No need to warm up tubes etc, just switch on and play. For me it’s a keeper. I swapped the stock speaker out for a Celestion Alnico Cream and the amp got even better.

Thanks for the great video Dylan. And there it is..... My Boss Nextone Special is as good as my Black Face Amps. I will probably put my Fender Amps in storage until they are stupidly expensive. Michael isn't messing around when it comes to knowing what tube is . . . and his playing is good . . . " super reverb straight up" and Mike kept it and played insted of saying "this sucks." I have a Nextone Artist and it's a lot of fun. What I have noticed, though, is I play it in the half power (40W) mode at home with the master way down. While the 0.5W setting works it sounds overly compressed and bottom heavy to my ears. Pedals have worked well. One thing I'm currently trying is using the lead channel with the gain at minimum. On many amps this will provide more headroom. Whether this is true about the Nextone, however, I don't yet know. It is a bit different, though. Cheers!

It’s a lot like a tube amp than I even wanted in that respect, I feel like this amp needs some volume to come into its space. I more use my amp models at my practice volume. Like a tube amp it likes to be loud, actually sounds better at full watts and master volumes cranked up.

Really nice to see someone spend some time on this amp. I have played around w/ one at Sam Ash a few times and have been pleasantly surprised. I'd love to see you run some boost and other gain pedals into it to see how it reacts. I quite like this compared to a Katana, for simplicity sake. Essentially what you see is what you get(but with some ability to tweak some additional parameters within the software interface). I'm a little on the fence with this, but I'm a little more convinced after this video. Please do some follow up with pedals and also the drive channel. Great video!

Thanks for this video. I have this amp. and agree; it sounds very tube like. Great attack, chewy tone. I love it at home. Took it out for a bar gig, and none of that translated. All the tonal goodness got washed out, and what was left was a sterile card board like sound. This was a small bar, maybe 70 people. Pretty loud crowd, tho. Band is Country/Oldies. Not a loud band, but drummer is kinda heavy handed. Loud Cleans are important to me. We dont mic instruments. Thats too technical and time consuming for us old guys. I usually use a Hot Rod or Mesa Express 25, which are both plenty loud and clean, so I was dissapointed the Boss Stage (40 watts) didnt hold up better. I do like the Nextone concept well enough to possibly get the 80 watt Artist or Special, when gigging gets back to Normal. Please tell me if you, or other musicians have used the Nextones successfully at gigs. I'm looking forward to going thru your videos. Looks like a lot of good stuff there

I've got one too recently (Nextone Stage). At home it's the tube goodies all day long, but at higher level it tends to struggle to keep headroom consistency. In other words it lacks a bit of power. Also the "tube" tone is 90% there, but the tube attack and heavy feel not really (80% let's say). Overall I'd say it's still very worth it's value! It's ideal for home use, practices, smaller gigs (but mic-ed could be enough for bigger) and tone searching. But for bigger shows i would go full tube hands down. Also haven't tried the Artist or Special, maybe they are better. Thanks for your input, cheers!

I would add one more comment. Tube amps, guitars, guitar pickups, speakers, have been the same, or roughly the same for almost 70 years. Don't misunderstand; I love the sounds that come from Fenders, Marshalls, Vox's and Boogies. It just seems that every other tube amp that came after these are some variation on these and they've pretty much been figured out. It might be blasphemy (Heresy?..I always get those two things mixed up) to say this, but I'm really intrigued by the idea that new technology is being created that could bring the electric guitar into a whole new era and I'm ready to see that happen. Doesn't anyone want to see the instrument progress and grow? I'm glad this amp behaves in a way that is familiar because we can find new ways to evolve it. Alright! Come get me! I'm braced!

I started to play guitar in the 90s mostly because of punk and metal. Although i like almost any style of music from any era of humankind, when it comes to guitar amps and sound i found I'm not usually into anything pre-Van Halen ideas. I am generally a high gain guy for a start. I been to gigs where bands share backline and i usually hated when the amp they lended me was vintage styled even when recent made. For blues and other stuff, they are ok, but for heavy distortion give me anything post-78 designed, and i dont mind if it's tubes or solid state. Solid state amps i have used are good at that field.

My one critique of this vid is you had the master volume at about 9:00. Boss says that cranking the master is what pushes the virtual poweramp tubes. To control volume, you'd use the..... attenuator switch, i think it's called. Otherwise, cool vid. It goes without saying that you can really fine tune the amp using Boss's software, including making amps act in non-traditional ways (such as having the 6L6's BMT controls act like those in a Marshall)
@beaudjangles
@beaudjangles 3 жыл бұрын
I just bought the special and I can’t work it out. You definitely get more grit when driving the master volume, but when you put the headphones in, the master volume doesn’t change the amount of grit, it just makes it louder. It’s sounds like the grit of when the master is on about 2 o’clock but it just controls the volume. They are doing tricky stuff, and I’m gonna have have to work on it so my sound is gonna translate from the practise room to the stage. All that said, it’s on a par to the Mesa road king I used to own. Different but equal. I don’t miss the weight, the hum, the maintenance, the warm up, or the reverb of that Mesa.

Hey Dylan! Quick question about unpotted pickups. I'm trying to get a strat set wound unpotted. Would it be wise to wax pot the bobbin / magnet / plate etc assembly BEFORE winding, then proceed to wind? Would this help microphonics any (because all of the hard parts are "sealed")? Some guys like Curtis Novak Claim that microphonics don't come from the coil per se, but rather the hard parts of the pickup that are vibrating. And if you can damp those parts, you'll be free from squeel Im just wondering if Wax Potting would be enough to seal the Hard parts....

I had the stage, it missed the lows I wanted. Went to the Artist and it was exactly what I expecting. I find the « tweed lead » in the software sounds amazing. This model might cool in the stage version, I’ve to admit. Still I like it in my Artist. It might be more of a blues jr than the 10’ fender tweed ah ah The Nextone special would have been my choice if it was available at the time I bought it. More efficient with humbucker, I find. Because the highs and bottom option with the kind of speaker. Ps. Today I just played with the Benson Preamp » as a boost for a smooth tone and it’s amazing : ) don’t be scared to boost the signal in the Nextone, it loves it + I just discovered the solo EQ adjustment in the software, oh wow… the boost on the side of the power amp with the desired frequencies at your taste is great… this still with your favorite overdrive, it makes lead tones to die for! The Artist version has as much quality as the Special, just different. It strength reside in the way it blooms like a tube amp. The Special has more grit in the highs which is good for certain situations. When I play with the software, I realize the Artist is more than enough for my needs. Don’t get me wrong, I have a lot of boutique gear and this little beast is my way to go at the end of the evening when I want to relax.

I Dylan, i am very glad to see your interest about that amp that i own here in France. Here we are so conservative that nobody buy someting without big names on it like those beginnig with F or M or V ! It is ridiculous and your test prove it. Of course i own also some tube amps but that Boss Nextone is perfect for home use, as you can manage the volume and plug it to your computer to tweak it, that is not in your video. Thanks Dylan to try to change the poor man idiot perception!

No it doesn't. I just bought one of these after listening to countless KZbin demo clips, I even pushed the boat out and went for the 80W Special. Be aware the one you get will not sound anything like the vid clips, well at least mine didn't. After spending 4 hours fiddling with every combination I have given up and my ears are hurting, its going straight back to Andertons - utter garbage. Now I know many will not agree with me, but if you are expecting the smooth harmonically rich touch sensitive responses of a valve amp then forget it, despite the sale bull that it does. Now it is possible that I got a duffer, and certainly it does sound like the fancy speaker is busted, but I think it unlikely. I even listened to the video on the Boss website, but I gotta tell you that is not the same amp that I just got delivered today. My first and last venture into the digital amp world, back to tubes for me. Beware, make sure you can send it back before you commit to buying.

That's my experience as well. I have, and have owned tons of great tube amps, but one old workhorse I've used for many years is a Fender Sidekick 25 watt solid state. Use a compressor, set low to take the edge off the immediate solid state transient attack, and never run the gain at more than edge of breakup. Everyone who has ever heard it said they think it sounds great.

We associate tube “sound” to specific circuits that made them (in)famous. I’m screaming into the void here, but this is marketing wank. That tube selection knob is literally switching between modeled amps that we associate with those specific tubes. Now, I am NOT saying it’s bad at all. Modeling amps have come very far as of late, like the Fender Tonemasters. I would have killed to have something like this 20 years ago!

So i guess the judgement is "Good Enough" for cheap gigs, like the other 80% of my gear. But I guess the other takeaway is that it isn't bad for solid state. Would it be great if an amp can accept various impulse responses for the ultimate tweaker.
@Laburnus

As long as this is dynamic reacts to vol changes its legit. Even if it does not really sound like a particular tube. The biggest problem with pocket friendly multieffects is that they are nowhere close to how a tube amp behaves. You take a Marshall higher gain prest and no matter how you roll of the volume on your guitar, or how light you pluck the strings, it just does not clean up. These transistor based amps at least do that, so the player is forced to work on right hand technique, unlike with these cheaper digital simulations.

@@DylanTalksTone the cheapest unit that handles dynamics extremely well , which I had a chance to play around with is Palmer Pocket Amp. It's more or less a copy of Sansamp , but it's way cheaper in Europe. Used one goes for around 60 bucks. A mooer ge 150 is 170$. Haven't played mooer ge 200, this one is 270$ . The cheapest helix is 500-550$ .

There's a few modeling artifacts that still come across. HOWEVER, close enough is close enough. I hate the Katana. I really hate the Fender monstrosities. @@DylanTalksTone Only four? No 7591 or ELL80 power stages? ...all right... _fine_ ... Have to _settle_ with just four.... Joking aside, this is the one "modern" non-tube amp that has impressed me the most. Which is not an easy thing to do. The last SS amp that I was really taken with was the JC-120. Although it's hard to beat the tuck and rolled Kustom amps from the 60's...just for the vibe. Not the sound.
@darwinsaye
@darwinsaye 3 жыл бұрын
@@DylanTalksTone Perhaps no modelling such as we tend to think of "modelling", but it's also not really as simple as just putting it down to having four different analog power stages. "Tube Logic technology uses digitally- controlled analogue solid-state components to mimic the dynamic response and clipping characteristics of a valve output stage." This sounds to me like it is still software doing all the heavy lifting in the tone sculpting.

Really good sounding emulations but every old tube amp has its own quirks and qualities good or bad. Digital replications are good but but they have no quirks. They produce an idealized sound of a great old amp. To my ears there's a generic quality to digital models. That being said I do use modelers because they are so damn easy to use at a gig. Fractal and Kemper top the list for realism IMHO. BOSS is amazing for the price points they offer.
