Boss Nextone - Final Verdict
This is my second review of this particular amp. I've had the Boss Nextone Stage for a while now, and I've come to realize what I really think of it. First impressions often go out the door when you spend a bit of time with new gear. So is this an amp worth getting? That's what I'll try to answer in this video.
The Boss Nextone is a new modelling amplifier by Boss, who are of course also famous for the very popular Katana series of amps. This is a slightly more expensive amp that models different power amp valves (or tubes). The particular version that I'm looking at is the Nextone Stage, which is a 40 watt combo.
Enjoy the video!

The gear I most often use.
A Stratocaster of some kind, either an Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, or a custom Strat with a scalloped fretboard. For 7 string stuff I mostly use an Ibanez Universe.
A Marshall 1987x into a Marshall cab.
A Fender Yngwie Malmsteen overdrive, plus a Boss NS-2 noise gate, or a Strymon Sunset.
A Morley Bad Horsie 2 wah, and a delay.
An AKG C-414 mic for the guitar.
For acoustic stuff I use a Taylor 710 short scale thingy.

John I agree ! But Elmo is picky about his sound. That’s why I look to his videos. He is opinionated. I will agree. And Elmo is a metal player trying to make a silk purse out of a sows ear (Nextone into a Marshall, Randall, Mesa Boogie) ..... I think this amp would sound good with Pops Staples; The Staples Singers, CCR, Al Green, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt.

@@andrewwheelerguitar Thanks for acknowledging me!! At least my ear is on the right track! I respect Elmo. But he was really disappointed with this amp. I know it looks like a Marshall JTM 45. But it’s not. My Peavey blue stripe bandit is more like that. I used to think there were 2 types of amps in the world: “ clock radios “ or Marshalls. No, it’s like girlfriends; there’s ALL types. Anyhow in my mind, the Nextone Stage is patterned after a fender. A champ or a Princeton maybe? I broke down 2 weeks ago and bought one to play at church and jam at people’s houses and hopefully house parties and coffee houses. It’ll get SRV( little wing) , Kenny Burrell, Hubert sumlin, Toy Caldwell, Pops Staples, John Fogerty sounds for days. You’re not going to do metal with this amp. I bought it because it was relatively light (29 lbs) , reliable to gig with, and rounded distortion. Just like Waddy Watchel playing behind Linda Ronstadt ( tumbling dice). I wanted an amp that would give me some dirt, but I wouldn’t bury the female vocals. These amps are not for everyone. They are not moving at guitar centers around Chicago. But not everyone wants an amp that goes from Fender cleans to medium dirt. But it works for me.

I purchased at a good price my Nextstone Stage to practice in apartment. I am playing an old 84' Strat for clean and blues stuff and even at bedroom volume, i really hear a different feeling between the four modes, specially with overdrive pedals. I also own a Fender HotRod dlx + power attenuator and it's unusable in apartment : neighbors are saying it sounds "sh.t" ;-) Sounds good for me, without metal shredding. I forgot about the price, but I found them online pretty cheap. I'm also looking at the Marshall Origin 20 and the DSL 20 and 40. I need something I can practice with and record at home and use for an occasional small gig. The origin would require a good overdrive though because it doesn't have enough gain. More gain. More gain. !! 🤣 I have katana mk2 50 which I really like on the brown channel. Great review sir. Great valid points. Love hour reviews my friend. Be safe sir.

I don't remember exactly but pretty sure about 500 dollars. And yeah I'm not crazy about it. The biggest thing for me was the .5w setting sounds decent for me and that's all I really can ever play on in terms of volume. I leave it on clean, 12 o'clock the eqs, turn the master all the way up, the presence 12 and then use my pedals. I do like 2 of the valve settings with my board. The el34 and the 6v6. I returned mine for the same reason. The amp sounds good (I’m not a high gain player), but the emulations don’t really sound much if at all different. I have a Princeton Reverb already and other than added delay, it’s not a viable option for variety. If it had the effects section of the Katana, I’d have kept it if only to be able to leave the pedalboard at home for gigs.

Although I like the amp and I kept it, I do agree with a lot of your review. It is actually a one trick pony 🤷🏻‍♂️ and it is not marketed like that and indeed it is not cheap. I only use the clean channel with pedals and it does that pretty well. I’m an old school type of player so we look for different things in an amp. But I like to record at home with a mic and it serves that purpose. But I do understand that this is not an amp for everyone 😉

I somehow missed this one I guess, it don't remember. Imagine my surprise when J did a search for nextone 40 review and you popped up first or second in the results set. Do you remember if this felt like a tube amp? I've heard good things, but I bet you have to use the gid damn app which sucks, but you can adjust bias and sag, etc which might make it more responsive. It sounds ok so far hearing it just on mg phone at least. I love the specs on paper at least with the attenuation for jamming at lower volume and the idea you can pick power amp types which is very cool for recording especially. You were killing me with that one tune. 🤣 Sounds good with your overdrive pedal and I thought it sounded great when you were playing the Yngwie stuff. I would have to have a noise suppressor. Plus I would use a delay in the loop as well. Wah, and maybe even an overdrive like the boss SD1. Very cool man. Thanks brother.

Blues player here: I found the Nextone to be very close to the Blues Cube in terms of the overall tone. The Katana does not have the tone the Nextone does and I do like the Nextone better. That said, the Nextone is more than double the price and quite close in new price to a Marshall DSL which I consider to be the superior amp in this range. The advantages of the Nextone is that it is light and small (which the Katana also is) and it should be quite reliable (which the Katana also is). So, I tend to agree that, at this price point, there are better options - or sacrifice a little tone and get a Katana.

@ken Dickinson Yes good assessment. I had all three. Kat bang for buck good do it all amp but lacks inspirational tone, Blues Cube Artist great feel but tone not to everyone's taste. But only amp I have gigged for three years. Then the Nextone which had some great features but I could not get the drive channel right. In the end decided that the other two fitted my needs better so sent it back. However kind regret that because on 6l6 mode and just using as a clean pedal platform then it might have been better for me....

I respect your opinion, Elmo, and I would agree that the amp is not necessarily a good choice for shredding or highly rectified sounds without a pedal. However, it's a great sounding amp in the classic style, and you would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between it and the tube amps it emulates. It's clear that your musical talents are more on the metal side, but you can tell from other demos that the amp does in fact sound great for classic rock and Blues. As I said, I agree the amp isn't made for high-gain rectified sound and blistering scales. It's made for the more challenging classic rock and blues and the ability to make the guitar sing without having to rely on Self indulgent speed

(unlike Elmo and that's fine!). No amp will fully satisfy all players. Ever. Period. Compare the playing style of Elmo and Shane and you can see why one really likes the amp, and the other dislikes the amp. Its all simple without getting caught up in the knuckle dragging "this sucks" camp. The tones of the nextone are for those who enjoy that vintage surf rock, jangle rockabilly and high or low gain blues tones! If you want a high gain metal amp there are no doubt far better options. I realise I'm late to the party here but wanted to say, firstly, I love the shredding! However your review didn't mention the switchable power modes on the amp and I think you've missed the key reason why people should consider buying this amp over a valve amp. You can play this at home on the 0.5W setting and achieve valve-like tone and feel and sociable volume levels that won't damage your eardrums or upset your neighbours. There are few all-tube amps at this or any price point that have the flexibility to be used both as home practice amps as well as cranked up on stage and that's precisely why I'm considering buying one.

Marshall f*cked up with the Code amps, Fender f*cked up with the Mustang GT amps (The older Mustang V2's are very decent, though! And possibly the V1's, but I've never played through one of those.) It seems like Boss wanted in on the _f*ck up an amp contest._ I think I would look much more favorably on the Nextone if the price tag was 200-250€.

The Marshall Code series are excellent amps. Your comment indicates to me that you have no ear, or perhaps you can't use the adjustments to get a sound you like. I turned one channel into my favorite Jazz amp tone of all time. So my $249 Code 50 saved me over a $1,000 because I have no need to purchase a specialist "Jazz only" amplifier. After that, I can still g back and play JCM800, Bluesbreaker and Plexi tones from the same amp.

@@PeterDad60 Hey, it's great if you're getting what you want from the Code series! It's not like it would hurt me if you do. But I think we're probably looking for very different features and sounds. I was initially looking to buy the Code 100, when they were about to come out. I was very hyped for it. Then they increased the price (I think it was like 200€ price increase for the Code 100.) And then the reviews started coming in... and I can't say I was very impressed at that point. This video is pretty accurate description of my feelings about the Code series at the time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl6nhoGphaaBd5o (Yes, I know the Code 25 is quite different from the 100.)

I had very bad service from my music store so should give a negative report. BUT Been playing for 30 years. What I don't like is tube volume making small venues turned into mud on stage. Nextone gives crunch and drive at lower volumes with pick attack skills. So your review to me was more about your skill set and lack of concern for other band members and the sound guy. there are differences between the four value settings and if you can't use them or won't use them then get a different amp for shredding. The four tube technology amps permit greater variety for other things than shredding. The variety I believe is its purpose for a clean and crunch combo for a gig and with volume knob control skills the crunch sweetens up without losing much volume adding dynamics other than shredding and no tube matainence to worry about and lighter to carry.

Yep, my thoughts about the amp also. The speaker will improve its sound when broken in. The cabinet could probably be improved as it’s most likely composite board; switching to solid pine always improves the sound compared to that stuff. Sitting with a Stage yesterday showed the tube-type setting affected feel and headroom at low volume. For gain at volume they’re likely to affect low-end and sparkle in addition if they behave like the real tubes do. Those are the same things I see from my 6V6, 6L6 and EL-84 amps. These are intriguing amps and worth investigating.

Elmo Karjalainen Loved your playing, man (dynamics are fine and dandy)! But I guess there’s a point in saying that the difference actually exists between the power amp models. It just needs a lot of software play to make each sound proper which might well prove annoying. Besides, if one really wanted to make their certain amp sound good, they’d bother doing it, but when you have a hold of a decent valve amplifier in the first place, it’s just not worthwhile (which was actually a great point from this video!) Being an owner of a hefty pedalboard, I was actually curious if the Nextone works well with more aggressive distortion pedals like ProCo Rat and its clones. Is the 80-watt version going to work well in a live gig situation (being run considerably loud)? Once again, a great unbiased review! Made me rethink the decision to buy the amp for some tenth time now x)

You seem like an experienced player but your assessment of the power amp switching section making little to no difference makes it seem like you don’t really understand how that works. If you’re mostly a high gain player then I get that you wouldn’t really understand these subtle differences. You’re not going to get huge tonal differences switching this section but there will be mild differences in how soon it breaks up, but you would only notice that pushing each power amp section to the limit. Also, there’s a difference in how it responds under your fingers, again subtle but I think it would have to be something you’re seeking. You have to set up the amp for the type of amp you’re going for. I have a profile set up on this to use as a straight Fender Deluxe, one for a Marshall combo and one in which I have a Twin on the clean and Marshall on the Lead channel. The amp is brilliant for this application. I would agree if you mostly a high gain player, look elsewhere.

If you're using the instrument as a form of fine motor skill enhancement and dexterity training then you're showing marvellous progress. If you're intending to actually play music that is pleasing to an audience you may want to consider such musical ideas as slowing down your phrasing, playing outside of the pentatonic boxes or playing melodically within them, using dynamics, blending single note passages with poly note and chord based progressions, a unifying theme which has both tension and resolution.....just a thought.....you're obviously a more than capable player and I'd love to see you play more expressively

Finn doesn't bother to check out anything about a combo and buys it expecting it to be good for modern metal. Because Finn thinks all amps are made for modern metal. When Finn finds out that the combo is not for modern metal and doesn't respond how he expects it to he denounces it as no good. Yeah. That combo is not for you Elmo. What do you think valve circuits do? Metal, metal, and maybe some of that Swedish metal that Ola guy plays? The Nextone combos are for people who know that the difference in the circuits is related to clean headroom and crunch. Of course you won't hear a great deal of difference if you come at it lunkheaded. And the conclusion that you should buy a valve amp because it will somehow be magically better and work differently because valves are Perkele and therefore metal on a stick is just fail. Elmo has been honest in his reviews. And his honesty has revealed the limitations of his own knowledge instead of any faults or cons with the combo he bought without understanding anything about.

Hi scalloped fretboard-guy. "Why don't you get a valve amp?" Because it has to be maintenanced like shit and the sound is NOT that much better - and it won't be better at all in.. say 2 or three years. So that little bit more of money to be paid to this - very nice - amp is NOTHING compared to the amount you will pay most regularly for tubes, the maintenance charges of a tube amp (biasing, valve sockets, etc. - and maybe a new transformer), it's relatively higher price is nothing compared to the amount you will pay for taxi fees to get your tube amp carried from A to B., the money you will spend for orthopaedic surgery or profilactic backbone training, etc. : ) Not to mention the problems you face regarding weather conditions, humidity, and so on ... The speaker may be not the right one - that is a matter of taste. And the tone maniacs using a bullshit Blues Junior usually change it's speaker too - so what is wrong with this amp? Nothing. In general I like the way you present your stuff and I find your playing technically awesome BUT it does not support the sound and feel of THIS amp. Here is a sample from boss, with someone who plays it in a way, that would not let me think "the speaker ain't good enough": kzbin.info/www/bejne/bl7IoZaQrLeEjdk You are obviously a shredder - with all due respect: this is not your amp.
