► Free Jazz Piano Crash Course:
www.pianogroov...
In this lesson we create a simple Bossa Nova or Samba groove over the major 251 and 2516 progressions in the key of G.
Start With Simple Voicings
We start with a simple vamp using 3-note voicings for the major 251 progressions. We experiment with chord inversions and play the voicings in the different registers of the piano.
Altering the V7 Chord
We can add alterations to the V7 chord to achieve different chord colors and textures. Check out the course on Altered Harmony and USTs for more information on the tensions we can play over dominant chords.
Adding the VI7 Chord
We can extend the progression to include the VI7 chord of the key. In the key of G Major, we can add an E7 chord which creates a circular progression back to the ii-7 chord. We now have the progression A-7, D7b9, G7, E7alt.
The VI7 chord in a 2516 progression is often played as an altered dominant chord. Jovino demonstrates the different chord colors and tensions that can be played over the E7 in a 2516 in G Major.

This is amazing! I've just recently become comfortable with basic 251 voicings, and all I had to do was put a bossa nova groove on it for it to become music that fills me with joy. I'm going to be spending a lot of time playing with this!

My intuition is never to have 2 notes in a chord a semi tone apart, when you played that F# next to the G that's something I would instinctively avoid, and yet when you put that G an octave lower than the F# it sound great.
@joeysung311

The right dissonance can sound amazing (also the F# is part of the g major 7th which is a 'normal' chord in jazz)

Hello sir. I bow to you and take off my hat. Thank you. I have been playing piano, since I was 8 years old. I already knew many scales, especially the classical ones. You, dear Sir, have learned so much from this video that I haven't learned in 2 years (or only subconsciously). Suddenly a lot of things seem logical to me now. Within 24 hours I could play your song, tomorrow I'll learn all the chords, when my new piano (fullweight) arrives :) I'm looking forward, and i will enjoy it, to have more "aha effects" from your videos. 2 years ago I already saw your video and thought "Oh no, I can never do that", but yes, what can I say, it works very well. Even my old songs sounds much better now, beceause of your technique. Thanks master 🍀

Oh my gosh. I learned high speed in less than 15 min. !!! You compacted all this in 1 lesson. Now I’m inspired to tackle these regular chords and make a Bossa nova sound from it!!!! Thank you so much!!!

Love this style, thank you so much for the insightful video!!! I rarely comment, but I felt like I( should because you made Bossa Nova easy to understand while simultaneously giving us a TON of depth into different variations and inversions that we can toss into the improv to mix it up :) you're the best

The way groove has explained bossa nova here is wrong. He has complexified it by using cut time. It should be 4/4 and include the exact notation of what he is demonstrating..

I think of the right hand recreating the rhythm of the _clave_ . (3 then 2) or sometimes like a _caixa_ (snare drum) The left hand recreating a bass drum rhythm (like a heart beating) or _surdo_ . I listened to explanations on drumming and try to feel that bossa nova groove on piano.

Bossa Nova vs Jazz: Who wins? Ahhh, difficult one. But my pick is Bossa Nova. It has melodies and harmonies that are far more tonal. Jazz experiments a lot more and goes into atonality. Jazz really has no rules unless you take it as a template for the foundational patterns. But I guess you could say there is a vibe to it that is also unique. But yeah, tonality, BN wins hands down.

Sorry to say Piano Groove: This is a bit confusing. Bossa Nova is 4/4 but you have used cut time without indicating this in the signature. It would help if your notation actually showed the notes and what you are playing. You have added bass notes. It's not simple like you are making out. I am inclined to believe you have learnt bossa Nova by ear and don't know how to notate it. Can you explain why you have such good technology but don't use it effectively? Why give a lesson if you aren't prepared to do proper and accurate notation?
