Hey man, I would really have loved tutorials like this back when I was a kid and had proper classical piano lessons… I've never really learned how to improvise with chords that are a little more involved than triads or something with a seven thrown in, and I've always been jealous of people who did. I'm in my twenties now and want to get back into playing piano, and your channel really is a goldmine in that regard. Thank you so much!

Awesome! Hope this one inspires. If you want to get more into the theory, I suggest checking out two "courses" here on KZbin: My "Piano Quickie" series which focuses on things like how to construct chords and so on; and my "Jazz Piano Course" which will help you understand how jazz harmony is formed (this is basically a course in what's called "Diatonic Harmony").

If you had a beginner at the beginning of this lesson, they would be well on their way to being an intermediate at the end. You really have a calm way to break down complex ideas into the basic parts that anyone could use. I'm not at the piano now, but this is definitely going to have my attention.

It’s been hard to find a good bossa nova tutorial on KZbin so I’m so glad you made one! If you do make another bossa nova video, could you please consider discussing how to integrate a melody with the rhythm and chords? Either way, great video as usual!
@MangoldProject2 жыл бұрын
That's a little more advanced, but I'll think about it. I was thinking of suggesting some "bossa nova chords" next time (a nonsensical term of course, because there are no chords unique to bossa nova, but you can sometimes make chord voicing choices that are more in line with what you'd expect in a bossa nova sound).

THANK YOU! Among the many Bosa Nova tutorials out there, yours is " the best" in my view because you 1)actually incorporate the rhythm COUNTING 2) included visualization chart for the visual learner. That's what make your video stand out from the rest. I THANK YOU !!!!

Thank you so much for your videos. Which keyboard do you use? I learned classical piano growing up as a kid and would like to get a keyboard to get back to playing. Thank you!
@MangoldProject2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! My main keyboard is a Nord Stage 3. If you're looking "just" for a digital piano I highly recommend anything from Roland, Yamaha or Kawai. Even their entry-level pianos are very good (e.g. P45 or P125 for YAMAH, or FP30 for Roland).

i really want to learn how the bossa nova vocal melodies are developed, or the types of scales and modes that form the logic of bossa nova melodies
@MangoldProject Жыл бұрын
That's a pretty deep question. Bossa novas draw upon diminished and 6/9 harmonies a lot, a little bit like the Barry Harris way of looking at jazz harmony. But that's a whole other video ... Be advised that I now have a Jazz Piano for Beginners series up on KZbin (going on weekly) that will in time also touch upon these issues.
@andrewstrasser Жыл бұрын
Is 6/9 harmony "6/9 chords"? I was looking at it and it looks like the pentatonic scale but spread out. Is that the calm and resolution in bossa Nova while the diminished is the tense emotions?
@MangoldProject Жыл бұрын
@@andrewstrasser You could say it's 6/9 chords in the first approximation. It also refers to harmony built on the bebop scale, where diminished chords resolve to 6 chords (or 6/9 chords, if you want to go a step further). (Hey, I didn't think a year old comment would get a reply back so quickly!)

I have a question about a solo on a track. Is there a way to send you the track and get your feedback on what you think is making it work? I have a sense that it's exactly what you are pointing out here.
@andrewstrasser Жыл бұрын
i'm a bit confused because i have asked around 10 people online who are experts at music theory if they could listen to this track for me and give me a rough idea of the theory going into it and every single time it has been ignored. is that something that gets shadow banned or something? i can't tell why this is happening lol
