I'd say it's a 7/16 glue stick gun but the rounded the number off on the packaging to suit metric based countries. I started off with a little glue gun but soon went down to Bunnings and bought a Bosch glue gun. Replacement glue sticks are easy to get and you don't run out of heat when trying to glue a big beade. The only downside is if you leave it on for too long without use the glue can get so hot it will actually melt foam.

Had the same issue with a 7mm gun sold at Bunnings. You could not buy the 7mm sticks at the store. When I questioned the staff member about this logic of selling the tool but not the stuff you need to keep it going, considering that is what they specialize in, they had no answer. End result no sale.

I'm a little nuts, but this is the kind of thing that would make me build my own aluminium 3-part mold and re-cast the 10mm sticks to the 'correct' size, but at the longer length and using the superior glue. (Because 2 days of work to recreate some $5 glue sticks is totally my style.)

the 10mm stick has a cross sectional area of 31.416mm² the 11mm stick has a cross sectional area of 34.558mm² if you stuff a 10mm stick into the chamber made for the 11mm stick, that leaves 3.412mm² of space for the glue to escape from the rear of the melting chamber. I've just measured the diameter of the hole in the nozzle of my similarly sized glue gun and it has an area of 6.283mm² this means that when you would apply pressure pushing the stick into the hole, some glue would come out of the front, but just over half as much again will come up the sides and out the rear of the heating chamber.

It reminds me that in the garage if you get caught out working on old cars, you can sometimes use an 11 mm spanner on a 7/16" bolt/nut. 14 mm & 9/16" works well, as does 19 mm & 3/4".

A few months back my old Bostik glue gun (same model) went bang and the smoke came out. I replaced it with another the same from Mitre10, although they no longer show the Bostik gun on their web site. We use a lot of hot glue, but I noticed that Mitre10 no longer sell the Bostik brand sticks. They now have a Promark brand, 20 sticks of 11.2 x 200mm - very similar to the Bostik glue. The more yellow, often harder glue doesn't stick as well as the whiter rubbery stuff.

Very interesting. Until now I had never heard of 10 mm glue sticks here in Canada. I've had a couple of old Bostik 260 (160W) glue guns made in Canada for decades. (Bostik was a division of United Shoe Machine in the USA.) I never actually checked the size of the glue sticks I used (I thought they were 1/2") but they always worked with no blow-back. Recently I bought a new batch of glue sticks from a national a hardware/auto supply store when my stash was running low. They were labelled 7/16 x 8" (11.1 x 203.2 mm). That's when the trouble started. It was getting really hard to squeeze the trigger to dispense any glue even after heating up for 20 minutes. I discovered the problem was a lump of blown back glue solidified from before. I went back and measured the remaining glue sticks in my old stash and they were about 11.5 mm diameter. The new ones were about 11.0 mm to 11.1 mm diameter. It looks to me like they've been downsizing these glue sticks to save money. I never found any documentation for my Bostik glue guns specifying the recommended diameter of the glue sticks. My solution at present is to cut away the solidified lump and next time to pull out the glue stick while hot. I've also found 1/2" glue sticks available to try. BTW, the original Bostik company no longer exists, for glue guns it's just a name used by Chinese knock-offs.

The Flite Test guys use the Ad Tech 200. That gun shoots out a ton of glue, and because it gets the glue plenty hot, it doesn't dry real fast. It gives you time to work with your model. Check out any of their build videos.

Was about to buy that HG3 today but something made me hold off - glad I'm aware of the stick types now. I see in Aug 2021 that Bunnings NZ have Bostik branded 11mm glue sticks available but they're only 100mm long. Whereas Spotlight appears to have the old packet you showed, 10mm x 180mm, which are probably the 11mm ones.

I found that the Acco brand of glue gun is very good. It has a large reserve and works with the 10 mm sticks. I’ve also tried a Stanley dual temperature. On the high setting it’s too hot and melts the foam. It’s good for wood. The Acco one is my favourite.

Then i bought an expensive Bosch and that got clogged up after 2 months. Ended up getting a 3rd one from aliexpress. That one turned out to be a gun intended for High Temp hot gun, so i had to add a dimmer circuit to get the temp down. Still using that one atm. The easiest way to kill a hot glue gun is to put high temp glue in a low temp gun, It clogs it up and is almost impossible to clean out.

I have a Bostic TG2 glue gun that I inherited from my dad so it must be between 30 and 50 years old, still in its original box complete with instructions. Nowhere on the gun, the box, or the instructions is there any mention of the stick size although the instructions do tell you the operating temperature is between 160C and 190C. I spoke to someone in their technical department who was very vague and suggested 12mm sticks should fit.

Here in the US there's 2 "Hobby" sizes, 1/4" and 1/2" and a 3/4" industrial size (for carton sealing and the like). I've never run into trouble like this - now I'm aware of the diversity of sizes, I'll be careful when buying glue sticks. One other thing (and it's where I 1st thought you were going with this video) - Years ago I was an industrial user of Bostick products - HD glue guns to nailers etc. I came to respect the quality, and as such purchased a "Bostick" (Owned by Stanley now I believe) glue gun like yours for a premium price - this was back in the early days of Flite test planes. Upon getting it home, I noticed it looked identical to a cheap (and dead) one in my glue gun graveyard. It is identical in every way to the cheap Chinese glue gun purchased at Wal-mart or a similar place, save for the "Bostick" sticker. (even the mold marks from the knockout pins line up) it died in the usual 8-10 months that most all glue guns seem to. If you are expecting great things from "name brand" tools like this, use extreme caution, often all you get is a price markup and sticker. PS - Why don't glue guns have pilot lights? Are the manufacturers SO cheap as to leave them off and create a fire hazard - it appears so. When I purchased my last "quality" glue gunI took the time to add a bright LED on each side and a power switch on the handle. 3-4 years later and It's still going - probably because I don't forget to turn it off when done with it.

Buy a semi industrial glue gun from a packaging supplier, they are typically more powerful, mine's 120W and they are correctly sized for standard 12mm glue sticks. Plus they have a big handle to squeeze instead of a little trigger. Mine cost about the same as the Bosik rubbish. The same supplier will sell you bulk glue sticks at a great saving and you get a choice of grade, quick setting, slow setting hard, soft, etc.

Here in Denmark the glue pins are either 11mm or 7.2 mm as normal. I have seen 10 mm glue sticks 10 years ago but they have all been colored or with mica. I suppose they are made by only "one" Chinese manufacturer as they were sold in cheap sets along with the glue gun. The last is just guesswork. Cleared a house of a deceased friend, a year ago, and came home with a couple of packs which had been there for years.). The gun isn't used for model aircraft, but it has been reliable, and perfect for smaller work which I do. It never runs out of heat when I stick plastic items together, bunch low voltage cables together*, or fix circuit boards into project cases. Using the correct tool for the job seems to be the point here. * Hot glue is far less likely to rip your skin apart on a snipped off and razor sharp end, as happens with cable ties in cramped spaces!

Martel, I just glue two sticks in series, and keep going until they eventually run out. Maybe I've been lucky with my gun. Or perhaps I'm a very slow worker! Whatever the reason, I've never had issues with the gun becoming too cold. The only things I don't like are the silly stand which tries to adhere the gun tip to the workbench after switching off, and the way in which the glue can generate seemingly infinite lengths of 'string' after gluing two items together. On my wish list would be an indicator LED, which I might fit one day, if a safe way of doing so could be found. Maybe a better, home-made, stand which includes a heat sensor and LED could be devised? But first, I need to get a round tuit!

Brian, the Yankee rocketeers were using SI units before 1962. Check out some of the NASA, USAF and Army movies on Jeff Quitney's channel. You'll find them talking exclusively in kilometres in some of the public information movies from that era. Please also remember that the first two countries to launch rockets into space (Germany, then Russia) on multiple occasions (the A4 or V2, then the Sputnik launchers which became the R7), did it using Metric measurements. The ISS uses SI too. For the record, whether you use Système Internationale (let's use SI, or Metric from now) units or the early 19th Century British Imperial units, is irrelevant, so long as everyone agrees on the unit in use and sticks to them. BTW, the pound weight is officially calibrated against the standard kilogram, and the Inch is calibrated against the Standard Metre. They have been for a number of years. Also, most electrical units of measurement are SI, as is the Second. Most of those have no Imperial alternatives. When did you last see the wavelengths of the visible light spectrum expressed in anything but SI, usually in nanometres? Even Shortwave Broadcast bands are named by their approximate wavelengths in metres. And the station frequencies are announced in Kilohertz; the Hertz being another SI unit. Yes, I know that miles are divisible by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 30, 32, 33, 36, etc, into whole numbers of inches, and that 1 Metre only divides into millimetres by 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 20, 25, 40, 50, 100, 125, 200, 250, 400, 500 and 1,000. But is it _really_ true that decimal fractions are too hard for people in the 'States to comprehend? You do it with the dollar, and nobody sweats much about dividing that by any necessary amount. Your people are as intelligent as any others. And yes, I hate xenophobic slurs, as might be inferred from the OP's comment, but let's assume that he was leg-pulling, and keep this channel friendly and peaceful. Thanks for reading. 🙂 And for Bruce and Co: 🙃

While we're at it. I know there's lots of different types of hotglue. Different melting points etc. Any thoughts from the experts?

All my glue sticks are 11mm in diameter. It also says 11mm on my gun. I once bought 10mm sticks that turned out to be 11mm as well. I thought there are only 7mm and 11mm sticks.

Odd for sure, nonetheless i never had a problem with glue coming back out the back, you must of been unlucky haha, Something worth noting, buy the black glue sticks they are normally sold as Automotive glue stick, the melting point is lower. which makes them more runny, however, the bond is much greater then the clear sticks.

All good stuff Bruce, as usual. But why are you asking us why Bostik lied instead of asking Bostik and letting us know their reply? I am as curious as you are about that.

My 1/2" (yes I am in the US) glue sticks measures 0.448" (11.4 mm). No wonder my Ad Tech 2000 glue gun doesn't push the glue stick thru!

FYI they are taking this practice from Apple I phones so you have to buy their brand to work with their tool. Shady IMO, its like Ford telling you that you cant fix their truck unless you buy Ford parts from Ford only

So im asking myself, "self is he gonna show us how to modify a wall outlet gluegun and make it a battery powered portable one?" Then self said, "nope just shut up and listen!" So i did and I thought, hmmm maybe the glue stik swelled up over time or something. Then i thought why the bloddy hell do i care. So just like i got sucked into a useless vlog, i guess you just got "glued" (punn intended) into a usless response. Happy flying guys & gals🤪👍🏽.
