That's a GREAT Song!
@larryd43524 жыл бұрын
Brad Delp suffered with depression for many years....and if you listen carefully to some of his songs, you will hear that in his music. This song , "Used to Bad News" & "Can'tcha Say You Believe In Me" all have undertones of depression...of feeling unworthy of being loved and expecting the worst. As someone who struggled with depression in my 30's, I turned to alcohol to ease the pain that I was in all the time. I had relationships that never seemed to workout and like this song talks about, I thought that no matter what I did...it was never enough...and I would never be worthy of being loved. Until I met my wife of 21 years now...finally...did I feel acceptance and love....and I stopped drinking. Depression can attach itself to anyone....so be accepting and loving towards everyone you know... because you don't know what they are hiding deep inside.

He's not trying to portray himself as anything. It's her that sees something in him that he doesn't see in himself and he is trying to live up to those expectations but doesn't think he can. Maybe ironically because he sees this and is actually trying maybe he is the man she sees and he just doesn't realize it ?

I believe that you heard exactly what this song was really about. You nailed it perfectly!! I'm glad that you heard exactly what I heard about what this man is trying to say to his love. There was nothing in this song about this man trying to decieve the woman that he loved, he was just hoping that his woman would see him the way that he really was is all. He's saying the woman he's singing to sees him on a pedestal. A vision of a man he can't possibly be and he's trying so hard to meet her expectations because he loves her and wants to be with her, but it gets harder and harder to do. That's what he meant by "And it gets harder everyday for me, to hide behind this dream YOU see, a man i'll never be." This song has always touched me, even as a kid, but I actually lived through something similar and when I did, it became painfully more relevant.

Well I think that way the song was originally written was about a man who had someone in his life who saw him in a way that he wasn't. He wasn't trying to portray himself that way but she had him on a pedestal and he was trying to live up to that but it just was getting to be too much. On the other hand I think Brad Delp who is or was the lead singer of the band Boston has an incredible voice, he portrays emotion just so well and I think this was his way of crying out. He suffered from depression all of his life or at least all over his adult life but I think all of his life and he did end up committing suicide in March of 2007. The note he left behind said something to the effect that he was a very lonely soul. It breaks my heart to know that and I love this song from the very first time I heard it when I was in college which was way way before he committed suicide. This has always been one of my all time favorite songs and is completely underrated and I truly do think that he was trying to tell the world something but he kept trying he kept trying to hang on and he just couldn't do it anymore. He afixated himself by making a contraption in the bathroom of his home. So incredibly sad and he is terribly missed because he was extremely talented and from what everyone has said that he was the nicest nicest guy but obviously in a lot of emotional pain.😪 Thank you for reacting to this India.

This song just drips with bitter emotion. The guitars sound like a four string quartet, each note so purposeful , poised and planned. The pain is reflected in both instrument and voice behind lyrics that tell the story, followed by a guitar solo that loses it's melancholy composure , breaking down into a frantic crying. The song gathers it's broken heart, softly saying goodbye Tom is a musical/mathematical genius, putting emotion and math together as only brilliant savant can.

This is every man you've ever known. This is me and my wife of 40 years, been through everything together, 3 kids, grandkids, cars, houses, sex, arguments, everything, both good and bad. No matter how hard I try, no matter what I provide, it is never what I think she deserves, she is my world. And why I always reach and strive for more, because she deserves it. If I can make it happen to elevate her world, will put in the work. But I will never feel I've done enough, worked hard enough, pushed enough. I know when I've slacked off, stepped back, took it easy, and it weighs on me. And every man out there knows that same feeling, we are the providers, and we carry that guilt. That is what this song is about.

Brad delp was the vocalist, sadly he took his own life, and this song is haunting.... I see it as a man feeling inadequate, in some ways it can be attributed to depression, low self esteem. I've always thought the song to be about a man who is trying to live up to the image the woman has built up of him. He knows he will never be the man she thinks he is. Rock is the opposite of rap. It's all about the music.I've listened to this song thousands of times without worrying about his mopey message. Often songs are written vague on purpose so it can seem to apply to the life situation of many different people and you can let it mean what you want it to mean. He could not bring himself to destroy BOSTON by quitting and could not bear being away from her. It got so bad that after this album he went into a deep depression because it cost him his true love. She moved on and he killed himself. All the money and fame was worth nothing compared to the loss of his true love. So the next time someone wants fame, just remember it will cost you alot! If money and fame is all you want then go for it. For Bradley it was an unexpected fame that tore his life apart. There is no disaster like success when your not ready for it!!!
