The best music ever recorded in someones basement on equipment the guy invented and built. I love Boston's story. Record company says "We like your band and want to give you a record deal." Tom Schulz says "Great." RC - We'll fly you out to L.A. , get you a good producer and start the process." TS - "Yeeaahh no. I need to write and record in my cellar." RC "That's f'n crazy and not how it's done." TS "Well that's the only way it's gonna happen." And the rest is glorious rock and roll history. Boston's unique sound is because Tom with his MIT degree designed and built the effects because he couldn't find them anywhere else. That's New England ingenuity for ya. And yeah guys this is definitely progressive. Mother flippin' cutting edge!

Really is an awesome story yeah. Tom Scholz is a mastermind. One of the things he built was what he called the "hyperspace pedal" in which he engineered a pedal by fusing components of a Dunlop Wah pedal (i think it was dunlop) and a certain delay pedal. That's that "warbly", "spaceship" sound that you often hear before/after certain guitar phrases. One of the most unique sounds I've ever heard and I've always loved his overall approach to music too.

Tom Scholz was a fuckin production genius. The music and songwriting is incredible, but the most incredible thing about Boston, especially this album is the production. NOBODY heard anything so well produced and the quality of the recordings hold up as much today as when they first came out, unbelievable. Not to mention he built all the production equipment himself and it wasn't even done in some super high end recording studio. I had to give him props, just for anyone who doesn't know. I'm a musician, a bass player and I've done a decent amount of session work, recording on people's tracks and what not, and anyone I know who is into production/engineering sees Tom Schulz as a legend, and he is. He is and will always be HIGHLY respected in the music industry.

I use to think the same thing, I graduated in 1979. But to be honest, there is more variety than ever before now and even better music, the problem is that it is not consolidated into main stream radio stations like it was then. So while there is music out there that is as good it is harder to find and so much much more of it. I mean think of it, back then we did not have the option to listen to music from all over the world. We do now, and news flash, we are not the only country with world class music. It will not be easy, and it will take time, just like I said, you will have to search through a lot of garbage but trust me it is there.

Considering this album came out in what, 1976? This album was way ahead of its time. Every track was a hit, the band was just ahead of the game, and I say that knowing such masterpieces by other bands came before it. Delp's vocals, Scholz's guitar and keyboards, the rhythm section, everything was so on point and razor sharp, its insane. You just don't hear music on this level anymore except possibly by the classic rock bands that can still pull it off, and there are not many of those bands left. I remember liking this as a kid growing up in the 70s, but I did not truly appreciate it until my adult years.

Boston is one of those bands that is so solidly ingrained in that 70s/classic rock sound that it can be easy to overlook them. The radio has overplayed them to the point that many people are tired of hearing them, but they're new to you, they're one of the seminal bands of the era. Tom Scholz not only played the majority of the instruments on their records but also revolutionized the recording process, inventing many of the techniques that modern artists may take for granted today. Not to mention the musicianship and arrangements are freakin fantastic. There's not a single element out of place.

Zac d Boston and Steely Dan, two 70s bands where the amount of work that went into the albums is something that will never be repeated, going forward, due to the changing economics of the industry. It is this piece of history that is over, won’t come back, but that’s ok. We can all listen to it forever.

Zac d said, "Tom Scholz not only played the majority of the instruments on their records but also revolutionized the recording process, inventing many of the techniques that modern artists may take for granted today". Zac d what are the exact recording techniques that Tom allegedly invented? Which recording techniques are modern artists taking for granted today? Have you ever been in a major recording studio that used 2 inch analog tape and put tracks down and mixed them? Here is part of the story that Tom conveniently leaves out. When Tom submitted his tracks for the record to producer John Boylan the drum and acoustic instrument racks are not usable for the record because they are to quote Boylan "amateurish". Boylan then hires LA engineer Paul Grupp to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to property record acoustic instruments. Boylan then gives Tom the directive to re-record all drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks. Tom certainly did not invent any new recording techniques when it came to recording the drums. Even after Tom re-recorded the drum tracks, Boylan still had to clean them up and put noise gates on the drums to get the separation/definition needed for the back beat to come through the mix. Any amateur engineer/producer knows that this is basic recording and production but the genius Tom Scholz did not take care of these basic production and engineering matters before submitting tracks to for the record. Tom spent most of his time getting the guitar and organ tracks to sound the way that they do on the record and they are nothing short of amazing and precedent setting. However, without Boylan's help this record does not sound nearly as good as what it does in terms of production, engineering and mixing. From your post I am willing to bet that you have not spent a lot of time in a top rung analog based 2 inch tape based recording studio. If you care to check my claims, please read the interview that John Boylan gave in Mix Magazine years ago

I love Boston. That album was recorded by Tom Scholz who was working as an engineer at Kodak back in the 70's. Music was his hobby. He played all the instruments except the drums. He literally recorded that album in his basement. It was the greatest selling debut album of all time for years till the first Guns n Roses album came out putting back to the number two spot (where I believe it remains today). When the album started to sell Scholz quit his job at Kodak and the rest is history. To this day people talk about the production value of that album and back in the day it was a huge step forward in rock albums. Not bad for a hobbyist in his basement. If you want to dig deeper into that album check out "Gonna Hitch a Ride"....one of their best songs.

There are some demos of the first LP floating around out there as well as other demo recordings made by Tom. Pretty cool. I am sure it has been mentioned, but 1300 comments take too long to check!, Tom got embroiled in serious litigation after their second LP and it took 7 years before their next epic LP, Third Stage was released. But it is a testament to Boston's sound that Third Stage, and the lead single Amanda, both hit #1 on Billboard It would have been interesting to see what they would have put out in the early and mid 80s if that hadn't happened.

Boston has one of the most unlikely origin stories. This is off of their debut album. For this album, the band seemingly appeared out of nowhere and dropped an incredible set of classic singles. Pretty much every song off the debut is worth listening to. I think "More than a Feeling" is one of the greatest singles of all time. Boston's debut held the record as the best selling debut album for years. Gn'R finally broke the record with Appetite. Boston was founded by Tom Scholz, an MIT graduate who was passionate about music but was working for Polaroid as an engineer. Scholz's friend Brad Delp, the vocalist in Boston, convinced him to pull together some demos. The result was this album. I think Scholz plays every instrument on the album with the exception of the drums. The album has some of the best production ever, Scholz invented a lot of the guitar effects and recording techniques used. Every part is perfectly played and fitted together like a Swiss watch.

Oh yeah, Tom Scholz is an electronics wizard. No other effects, amps, distortion pedals, delays etc would give him the sound he had in his head so he just made all his own stuff, Rockman. Brilliant musician. Brilliant engineer. There’s some videos of him in his studio on KZbin recreating several Boston songs on the fly. Interesting to watch his process and candidly discuss how he developed all the Rockman gear he used for the albums.
@johncogburn25906 жыл бұрын
Yes, just Brad doing the vocals, and Tom played all the instruments because it was recorded as demos. Eddie Kramer said it was presented to him as demos to for production, but Eddie told him it was perfect and to release it as is. :)
@neechee5150 Жыл бұрын
@@johncogburn2590 This is false. Tom did not play all of the instrument tracks on this record. Barry plays all electric rhythm guitars on Foreplay and Long Time. Barry also plays the lead guitar solo on Long Time. Fran plays bass on Foreplay. The band as pictured on the back of the record played every track on Let Me Take You Home and that song was entirely recorded in an LA studio. Brad even plays acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home. I also call bull on your claim that producer Eddie Kramer said what you claim. The reason being is when producer John Boylan heard the demo tape tracks, Boylan found that the drum tracks and acoustic instrument tracks were not useable for the record because as Boylan stated, they sounded "amateurish". Tom then hired LA engineer Paul Grupp to teach Tom proper mic technique and how to record acoustic instruments. Tom gives a directive that all drum tracks and all acoustic instrument tracks have to be re-recorded before the record moves forward. All drum tracks except for Rock and Roll Band were played by Sib. Jim Masdea played the drums on Rock and Roll Band. A good portion of the production work had to be done at Westlake Studios where the record was mixed on an API console by three people-Tom, Boylan and Warren Dewey. Tom did not have the outboard gear (noise gates, parametric eqs, compressors and expanders) necessary to really get the individual tracks where they needed to be and Tom's Dan Flickinger console did not have the capability to handle mixing or producing the tracks. If you want to do some additional research in to the real story behind this record please read the liner notes to the 2006 Scholz remaster of this record and the interview that producer John Boylan gave in Mix Magazine. Tom has not been the most honest and transparent person when he tells his story and his ego and narcissism have distorted and changed the real story aka the truth dramatically.

Sadly, the lead singer, Brad Delp committed suicide in 2007. This record was recorded in Tom Scholz's basement in Boston. Tom was the mastermind behind this band, he wrote most of the songs and played most of the instruments on this record. After it was done, the company execs wanted to meet the band; the problem was, was that there wasn't one. Tom played most of the instruments himself, and had Brad come and sing vocals. All of the songs were written by Tom or with him and Brad Delp. He had to rush around and hire people to fill out his band. In reality, Tom was/is Boston.

One thing not many people realize was that their first album wasn't recorded entirely in Tom's basement, the last track on the album "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" was actually recorded in LA in the studio, hence why the last song seems out of place and doesn't quite fit with the rest of the songs musically or by sound.

Tom was also the first (from my understanding) to do direct recording for guitar, rather than putting a microphone on an amp. He developed the first distortion pedal that had amp simulation built in so that recording direct from the pedal sounded decent. He was a home studio innovator. As for Brad, his death really got to me. Hard to believe that someone who sang such uplifting songs so passionately was suffering from depression. He was one of rock's greatest vocalists.

w1ll3rd All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan in a big name LA studio. All of the tracks for Let Me Take You Home were recorded by the band as pictured on back of the record in a major big name studio in LA. The record was mixed in a big name studio in LA. Tom knew and played in bands with Barry Goodreau for years before the 1976 Boston debut album was recorded. Barry introduced Brad to Tom years before this record was ever made. At that time Brad was Barry's brother in law. Barry plays guitar on multiple cuts on the record and the amazing solo on Long Time is definitely Barry. You will not find a performance of Tom playing the solo on long time. All of the drum tracks on the record were played by Sib Hashian except for Rock and Roll Band and that track was played by long time friend of Tom's Jim Masdea. Fran Sheehan plays bass on Foreplay. Brad plays acoustic guitar on Let Me Take You Home. Tom has a long demonstrated pattern of either omitting the contributions of others or greatly diminishing them.

The go-to song for testing high end stereo equipment because the song is considered sonically perfect in many ways.

The summer this came out, I was in Army Basic Training. We had zero access to radios or music. When I came home on leave before being stationed in Germany, I went to a party. Someone put on the album and I was instantly mesmerized. I exclaimed somewhat loudly after a short period, "Wow...who the hell IS this?" It became instantly silent (except for the song) and EVERYONE turned and just stared at me like I was from another planet. It was truly amazing to hear for the first time!

You guys got me thinking about why no one had mentioned this before and I think I know why at least for me. The classic rock stations at the time played the exact same 25 songs in a row 24/7 of which this song was a part of. When you hear the same thing over and over it looses it's TRUE worth until you are sick and tired of it which is what happened unfortunately. I called it killing a song. You guys should do "Smoking' by them. Now it's been so long it is fresh to me again so thank you for that!

It makes my heart Happy that you liked this!! Boston is one of my all-time favorite bands!! RIP Brad Delp... It's so sad that despite how positive and uplifting most of their music is, the depression that Brad suffered from was too heavy to bear. You just never know what some folks are going through... Please react to Steely Dan!! Black Cow, caves of Altamira, or pretty much anything except for Reelin' in the Years or Do it Again!!!

Boston was pretty much Tom Scholz recording all of the music with Brad Delp singing. He recorded it in his basement and needed to put a band together to be able to sell it and get the band signed. Just shows the genius of Tom who went to MIT and developed the Rockman.
@williamknell8646 жыл бұрын
Did Tom play the keyboards too. I was pretty much starting out playing guitst when this album came out. The production and arrangememt is amazing, especially considering how homemade it all is. Sholz's guitar sound and signal chain is all his own creation too. ALL PRE-DIGITAL!!! Its just mind boggling. Seeing these guys encounter it this way, fully for their first time, really takes me back. My favorite musical experiences are this kind, where you get blown over. Its a wonderful naive feeling. You cant really be ready for it. That's an awesome thing. Great video, guys!

Tom played everything on this album and recorded and put it all together in his home studio.But in order to sell it to the record companies he had to put an actual band together.Tom is a genius,two degrees from MIT and inventor of the rockman amplifier
@ElJuanSolo6 жыл бұрын
@@williamknell864 yes...anytime you heard organ on any song it was him. He made a killing on the Rockman Amp that was basically a small box the size of a "walkman" where you could get the gain of a full amp without the size of one. They later made Rockamn units so bands could play live with the same effect. He ended up selling it at one point...

This album debuted in late summer of 76, senior year of high school, I recall it like it was last week... there was continuous airplay of EVERY song on this album throughout that summer all the way into late spring. It was a radio airplay monster that you couldn't get away from! As mentioned below, every song on this album is great, and all of them got airplay. There are very few albums that have been released in the last 60 years that had every song played on the radio, but this one stands out, and continues to stand the test of time!

Singer Brad Delp was fronting a Beatles Tribute band(when not in tour with Boston) used to see him in a club down the street from me. Was absolutely . the nicest most down to Earth cat you could meet. Sadly he took his own life a few Years back. Strange as he always seemed happy. I think the reason this hasn't been suggested much is for years has been on constant rotation on Classic Rock Radio(played out). Though I am in my early 50's and remember hearing it as a kid and it was larger than life. The perfect album from start to finish. Flawless. Being from Boston makes me proud. Speaking of which how about some old school (70's) Aerosmith. Last Child, Toys in the Attic, Back in the Saddle!!
@Putaspellonyou6 жыл бұрын
He was a cool guy indeed. I met him after a Boston show in the 90s and he spent two hours after the show chatting with us backstage. Sholz came out for a bit but was mobbed by guitar nerds. Delp kept things loose and made you feel at ease...and he DEFINITELY loved the Beatles. I remember him talking to people about "A Day in The Life" in particular that night.
