Most people don't know that he did ALL of the instruments and singing himself. AFTER he got a record deal is when he got an actual band together. He did all the mixing in his basement.

Small correction > Scholz wrote (I believe) all the songs, did 95% of the guitar work, ALL the keyboards, but brought in 2 others for the drums, as well as Brad Delp for vocals. And, did ALL the > recording, mixing, and production. Almost all of the special effects, both vocal & instrumental, were designed and built by him as well, some of which are still used today in the digital age, because no one's come up with anything better! 46 years later and his analog "old" tech is still kicking ass. Guy was a certified genius

Indeed. I was a sophomore in high school in 1976. This was a totally different sound than any other band at the time. MAN, we had some great bands back then, including this one, Rush, The Eagles, and a TON of others. I actually had the LP of this one that was printed in color, but alas, at some point over the last 40-od years I lost it.

I'm another 1960 child and most of my favorite music came out in the late 60's to the early 80's. As for bands I remember besides Boston (not really sure about the timing on some of these), Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Def Leppard, ZZ Top, Supertramp, Lynard Skynyrd, Eagles, Foreigner. These are just the ones off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a lot more I'm forgetting. I think this was truly some of the best music of all time and it's not called CLASSIC rock for no reason.

Spot on! I couldn't have described him much better. That entire first album in itself is genius, not just in musical or sonic features, but the entire way that one single man pretty much created this and then tricked the record company into thinking that what they heard was an entire band...or so they thought. Genius!! In addition, Scholz is a philanthropist and a vegetarian. It's even been noted that he is great in sports such as basketball and ice skating, along with being an airplane pilot that he flies his own small aircraft on tour from city to city. I have been so inspired by this man as far as I can remember. My life would have been drastically different if I hadn't followed in his footsteps in so many ways that he inspired me to become today.

Can you believe that Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Metallica are also considered classic rock these days? I'm old enough to remember when they first came out. Very different mood and melody, but still, classics will always be classics, yet other eras of rock will eventually join them. The band Boston was "THE" band that carved out a whole new ultra musical sound (nothing like it) and genre of their own. The bands leader Tom Sholtz was the mastermind behind the whole deal. Of course when he found Brad Delp as a vocalist it sealed the deal to everyones great pleasure. It wasn't magical it was a miracle in music. I was wondering if it was a forgotten old song, or a new one. Indeed, it was new, but it was already in me. Probably the signature of a f***ing good song! @@SuperAlittlebitcrazy Absolutely!! And I love how the lead vocals trade off between two lead tracks allowing the phrases to bleed over each other. They were even able to do it live thanks to Barry Goudreau's voice being so similar to Brad Delp's. Most bands would have just cut each phrase short and had one lead vocal track. It's possible for one person to sing lead, but it doesn't sound the same. It loses a lot of richness.

Boston were originators. When this album came out it was considered one of best produced albums of all time. The founder, Tom Scholz, has a Masters in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. He built his studio in basement and basically recorded the entire album himself. He brought in Brad Delp for vocals and other musicians for final touches (and also the record company needed an entire band for the marketing of the album) and for touring. This band held the record since 1976 until this year of being the biggest selling debut album by a band in the history of rock and roll. It just fell into second as it recently was passed by Guns and Roses' debut, Appetite for Destruction. If you all want to review another Boston song, I HIGHLY recommend "Smokin'", and then "Don't Look Back"!!!!!
