What a GREAT SONG!!!. I do not understand why this song is unknown and underrated. It remind me to Def Leppard style. A hope song for hard times as nowdays.

Tom Scholz did musical things to me in 1990 that I can't wash off and this track is no exception. I need Tom Scholz 2.0.1 to short circuit a Shinigami. Mr. Scholz understands. Look, no disrespect to all of the people out there who've lost a loved one or ones, and I've lost both my grandparents, but hearing about how someone lost loved ones in just about every comment section of just about every song I look up is a buzzkill. People die every day. I wish I had a dollar for every time I read how someone's mother, father, grandparents, brother, sister, gf, bf, son, daughter, and monkey's uncle shuffled off this mortal coil. I'd be able to pay my house off. I get it. You're sad. I was sad, too, but I didn't kill everyone's buzz in a comment section over it. Be glad they moved on to a better plane of existence....

I'm a fan of the original Boston hits, when it sounds like a real band with "real" instruments (minus the Rockman over processing). This song represents a sad weak shadow of a one great and formidable band that no other band could touch in the 70's. It just sounds like listening to music from a cheap AM radio through a "tin can". The drums are thin, weak, and overly quantized (similar to the LinnDrum New Wave sounds of the early 80's). Look, I'm a huge fan, and I don't want to mention any of this, like many others avoid doing. And I know other people have their own opinions about these later Boston songs. Heck, I even played the sh*t out of Boston's 1994 Walk On album, which was probably the last semi-good album, but still nowhere like the exquisitely composed and engineered songs of the original album. I've lived in Boston and I've been on the Boston music journey a very long time. And truth be told, I could see the start of the long decline of the band's music all the way back on the Third Stage album, where much of the way the way Boston's more recent albums sound had first begun. Being a drummer, I honestly think the missing piece was always in the drumming. Starting on Third Stage, a robotic, electronic, "tinny" drum sound crept into their music. If Boston had simply used live, "large room" sounding drums (think Tom Petty's Refugee for that drum realism and rock sound), it would have made so much of a difference. The other key thing to Boston's degradation in their sound over the years was the Rockman. Oh Lordy, that Rockman. That over processed, deeply saturated and fake sounding Rockman. It's the kind of sound you would expect from a plastic electronic toy guitar for a child to make the kid feel like a rock star. But it has no place on a professionally produced album by one of the worlds greatest rock bands. Yes, it was there in the original album. But Tom and the rest of the engineering team back then thankfully had the good sense to dial it down so it was just below the level of conscious recognition. But starting with Third Stage (and to a degree, on "Don't Look Back" as well) the sound of the Rockman began to take center stage, sometimes even overpowering the vocals. Clearly, Scholz was really pushing to market and sell his product at the time, and wanted to use the Boston albums to showcase it. But... there really needed to be a voice of sanity and reason in that engineering room to tell Tom, "dude, this is too much! It sounds like crap turned up that high! It should just be background filler". But unlike the first album, there was no co-pilot to bring reason and sensibility to the engineering of Third Stage and later albums, and it shows. So yeah. I said it. I love this band deeply. But if people can't hear the difference in quality between the first and later albums, then I'm not sure what to tell them, except... go listen to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' "Damn the Torpedos" album, then come back and listen to this song, and tell me how the guitars and drums compare.

I agree with you in part on this. I've been a huge fan my whole life, since I was about 7 when their first album came out. I used to listen to it over and over. Then Don't look back came out and it really didn't have the same oomph. I think I was about 10. My favorite song on that album was 'A man I'll never be"...it was beautiful and so simple yet filled with meaning...3rd Stage came out when I was a Senior in High school, Amanda was the big hit and then Can't you Say...And I personally liked Hollyann the most....but I did notice how the vocals on that album just seemed to sit way back in the mix. Then when Brad really was absent from Walk On it became super clear that the vocals were just hard to hear. I love the sound of the Rockman so I guess we can disagree on that...but I do agree that the over powering of the guitars in the mix has slowly killed what made Boston great in the first place, great songwriting, clear vocals, and a great riff blending perfectly with beautiful harmonizing instruments all around. And so, I just go back and wish the first album had a lot more songs on it. :P
