That is one of my favorite "Honeymooners" episodes. I also remember when Ralph comes running out of the bedroom looking as if he just saw a ghost. Funny, the entire series you never once got see the bedroom of their apartment. I used to wonder what it looked like. Jackie Gleason could just make facial expressions and make me laugh. It's a classic show!

They did show the bedroom once, it the episode when Ralph barricades the apartment because he doesn't want to pay the rent increase, in the bedroom he ties a rope around the radiator and wants Norton to scale down the rope to get food.

Love the Honeymooners. Thanks for showing this. When I watch this episode I could see that Jackie Gleason was not expecting that bag to explode open, but he [is] a true professional. I never noticed Art Carney's expression when Ralph can yelling from the bedroom. I'll have to watch the episode again, not that I haven't seen it many, many times. Thanks again for pointing these items out to us. I must say...there are no real performers like these actors these days and I miss funny, live, family entertainment.

When Ralph turns off Norton's space show, Norton says:, "Official Space Helmut off, oh Captain Video, wherever you are." And when Norton locks Ralph out of the apartment and turns the space show back on, Ed says:: "Official Space Helmet on, oh Captain Videoooooo!!!" 😂😂😂 Good memories, thanks for bringing them back, Rick

Great video! I remember seeing this episode when I was a teen, where none of my peers understood my love for classic tv like I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners, Burns and Allen, or Mr. Ed. Having watched your video just now, I am inspired by Ed Norton wearing his space helmet while watching tv. Every time I watch a Ricknineg video, maybe I should wear something to reflect the subject of each video, say a bus driver hat for the Honeymooners, a Fred Mertz shirt for I Love Lucy, or a Charlie Chaplin mustache for Mr. Ed, no wait, you don’t cover that show. lol. Excellent work on spotting these out of character moments and for increasing my knowledge on the Honeymooners for I had no idea where it was filmed! Such history! 😁

I first watched the Honeymooners as a young child in the early 1960's. A while ago I bought the original 39 episodes on DVD and watch an episode every Sunday evening. I've seen this one many times now but never "saw" any of this including the play on words in the title. Thank you for pointing them out. One thing I like to do is listen to the laughter and a few rare comments coming from the audience which adds to the fun.

Wow! Now that has to be worth its weight in gold to be able to tell people you were in the audience for a taping of The Honeymooners. I'd literally be sitting on the edge of my chair soaking up whatever details they recalled. My brother and I got into this show as teenagers in the 70s, during Summer vacation. They'd run this show and a few other classic 50s shows, but by far, The Honeymooners was our favorite.

Probably my favorite episode! I love to watch TV and I even work in television and video (nearly 30 years now) and this one cracks me up! Not only was it live in front of an audience, it was live coast to coast on television, which was quite normal in those days. So, whatever happens, happens and the performers have to deal with it. Sometimes you'll catch one of them nearly flubbing a line or the scenery moving. In one episode where Ralph and Ed were getting ready to do a live TV commercial, a piece of a prop Gleason was holding came loose and flew across the room. Gleason, in a genius move, made up a funny line on the spot and just kept the scene going. It was hilarious!

Hello Rick, I love Jackie Gleason and I truly believe he is a legend. He was born to be a comedic actor. I like him in the role as the sheriff in the Smokey and the Bandit movies. As far as the Honeymooners, I liked him in the episode where he and Ed were drinking what they thought was wine at his kitchen table. However, right before they got to the table, Alice had changed the wine for grape juice. It's hilarious watching the guys act like they're totally intoxicated when all they were actually drinking was grape juice! I own all original 39 episodes on DVD and play them often. Funny true story. One night, when I was maybe 10 years old, me and my two younger brothers were playing bingo in the kitchen with our Mom and Dad. At some point, when we got thirsty from eating popcorn, I remembered that there was a can of grape juice in a cabinet that I just knew Mom had forgotten about. Somewhere, I had heard that wine was basically old grape juice that had fermented into wine. I whispered to my brothers that we could have that " can of grape juice" and it would be like wine! I don't remember what all I said, but it must have been obvious to my folks that I thought I was conning them into letting us drink "wine," so the folks let us have our little fun - and I swear, my brothers and I had convinced ourselves that we were actually drinking wine and getting drunk! Finally Mom told us later that it was actually a brand new can of juice!!! I'm sure I had seen this Honeymooners episode because my older brother and I watched it every night, so I must have this in the back of my mind!

The scenes mentioned were all great and I have enjoyed them since I saw them live (on the family Sylvania TV) in 1955. But the scene in this episode that I liked the best involves the beer (?) bottles Ralph puts on the table as part of his TV snack. He then sits down and sort of waves his arm over the bottles to make sure they (and his chair) are positioned exactly right. This act is more like something Norton would have done but it works perfectly for Ralph here.

Things like this happened a lot on Gleason's show, not only on the 'Honeymooners' skits but on other comedy skits he did as well. The reason being that Gleason didn't like to rehearse; he felt that too much rehearsal made the comedy go stale & he preferred to keep it as fresh as possible. So instead of rehearsing, he would simply pick up the script, look at it maybe once or twice & then just _remember_ about 99% of it! (On one look-through!) Meanwhile his co-stars had to struggle just to learn their lines & rehearse as best they could. Then when the time came to perform, Gleason could remember about 90% of the script, and if he forgot anything, he'd just ad-lib (and often his ad-libs were funnier than what was written!) Sometimes Gleason would ad-lib like crazy & go all over the script, jumping around to different sections without warning, leaving the director & camera-crew to practically tear their hair out, trying to keep up. It's amazing they were able to put up with it. (But what were they gonna do? Complain? He was the boss; he ran the show...) On one unfilmed episode (but which can be seen on Kinescope), a prop door jammed & Art Carney couldn't get it open when he needed to make his exit. So there he was, struggling to get the door open & one of the cast-members turns & (off-script) says, "Can't you get out?" Without missing a beat, Carney goes, "I know one way"...and simply walks around the backdrop! (Fortunately the camera cut away at that point & it wasn't seen by the viewing-audience at home.) Watching the other cast-members get flustered & still try to carry on was a hoot.
