My Grandfather worked in a diner in the late 30s in NYC, and the Stooges would come in there during lunch time, and he told me that they wouldn't say a word when they walked in, yet just looking at them would make everyone in the diner crack up laughing. Great memory from my late Grandpa which I share with all of you. That's how I preserve his memory.

It's sad about how Curly's obsession with his appearance drove him to drink heavily. Of course, the grueling shooting schedule, and the pain in his leg from having shot himself as a teenager while playing with a gun that had a hair trigger. RIP to the World's Greatest Stooge.

The Three Stooges shooting schedule was not grueling, they only spent about 6-7 weeks a year on the sets. Their personal appearance tours however were very grueling at times, and Curly partied hard on several of those, even after his condition was declining.

Curly reluctantly became a stooge as he had his own act was slim and trim with a great head of hair and mustache. He was proud of his appearance. Moe had him cut his hair and mustache off and gain lots of weight for his new character. Indirectly causing his decline

When Moe and Shemp worked for Healy in the 1920s, Jerome wished he could have joined them then, but didn't to please their mother. When given the chance to replace Shemp in the 1930s, Jerome leaped at the opportunity. When Ted told him he didn't look like a Stooge because of his thick wavy hair and well-groomed moustache, Jerome took it upon himself to shave his scalp. He shaved his 'stache shortly thereafter and thus was born Curly. No reluctance or coercion was involved in the making of most folks' favorite Stooge.

Keep in mind that Columbia didn't have the resources of MGM, Paramount, Universal or Warner Brothers, so Columbia did a lot of recycling on the 3 Stooges shorts. Moe had said he & others had noticed how Curly was a little off in some of the shorts, but realized how he needed rest from the Three Stooges when Curly had a breakdown in the 1940s.

@@edreid7872 During a 1960 interview with the families of the Stooges, Moe demonstrated on Larry how he would aim for the forehead, and not squarely in the eyes, the eye poke. I once read that Shemp came up with that when he was playing contract bridge. Shemp was convinced Larry was cheating, so he reached out and stuck both his fingers directly into Larry's eyes. Moe laughed so hard that he fell off his chair and crashed through a glass door and remarked, that's staying in the act.

One of Curly's aunts was quoted saying, "he eats much too much, much too fast". There was no "healthy food" awareness in Curly's era, people ate whatever tasted good. The Stooges ate at a lot of greasy-spoon diners while on the road with Ted Healey, this proved to be a significant factor in Curly's eventual decline. His arteries were plugged up with years of eating unhealthy, greasy food. He passed on January 18th, 1952, after several years of poor health. One of the funniest men to ever grace the silver screen.
@robertorick6383
@robertorick6383 2 ай бұрын
Add smoking cigars and alcohol to heal a bad foot injury after a hunting accident as a teenager and to overcome his insecurity of shaving his head for his distinctive look along with the greasy food and you have the toxic combination for Curly's strokes. Curly's third wife was also a notorious gold digger who married him for his money who slandered him in the press during their divorce causing Curly to have even more stress on his health. His fourth wife, Valerie, turned out to be an angel in disguise who nursed Curly to keep him in stable health after his 1945 stroke, and took good care of him until his 1952 death.

Thanks for doing a video about this short! It is one of my favorites as well and doesn't get mentioned very much. I agree that this was the beginning of the decline, not only for Curly, but for the Stooges shorts in general. The use of footage from previous shorts was becoming more common and would increase over the years. I think bringing Shemp in slowed down that practice a bit, but became ubiquitous in the 50s as they had many Shemp shorts to draw from at that point.

For those interested in CURLY history and health contrast, BEER BARREL POLECATS is the one to watch. Because of the recycled footage in this short, you can view the pre and post stroke Curly. The difference is alarming as Curly is at the top of his game (see-saw), and his apparent decline (be still, my heart) or (we all put the yeast in ! ). Those commenting that they did not notice Curly's decline are due for an eye-opener when watching this short. Check it out , stoogemaniacs !

hold that Lion was the only 3 stooges film to show all 4 stooges in a film at once Curly Larry Moe and Shemp. Though Curley was just a cameo and had no speaking part

I didn't know they started the reusing of footage concept so early. I thought it was strictly in the Shemp era they did that nonsense; it got to be really annoying. (Don't get me started on Fake Shemp!!!) It just shows how utterly cheap Columbia was. Besser made like 12 solo shorts for Columbia before he joined the Stooges. I believe the last 6 reuses footage from the for 6 (or so).

Also the headgear and the uniform color are different. Probably they didn't want to do slapstick in proper uniforms, to avoid making it look like they were insulting the military.

It’s still infuriating to me how much money the studio ripped off from the Stooges. They were making the studio a fortune, but getting pennies.

Totally false. The Stooges were well compensated, and only spent 6-7 weeks a year on the Columbia sets. For that they each made about $20K per year, which is about $450K annually in today's dollars.

@@Tracy81258 Columbia Pictures wasn't raking in millions producing Three Stooges shorts, they had enough trouble getting by as it was since they didn't have a lot of feature film stars and big time films. Jerome Howard (aka "Curly") was the best of the stooges. The act was never better than when it was Moe, Larry and Curly. Shemp looked too much like his younger brother Moe and his "fraidy-cat" act wasn't funny. Joe Besser ("Joe") wasn't funny at all with his "sissy big baby" act. Joe DeRita ("Curly-Joe") was 2nd best because he channeled Curly''s shtick.
