I want to speak under correction on this matter, am a Namibian and been working with agencies that control agro and horticultuere products. There is no absolute ban of SA products but what we are trying to do is to get our local farmers to also have a share of the market. We close borders for products already available in our country, which is a very fair game. We need to protect our local markets we can't just be flooded with SA products. SA import our beef and mutton because they need our meat. If we have produce in our country why import. We also need to grow and benefit.
@ollievw34502 жыл бұрын
I understand your sentiment, but protecting an industry does not necessarily help the consumers of a country. If products become more expensive because they are produced less efficiently or if certain home market producers abuse their protected status, then only consumers will stand to lose. Perhaps the better solution would be to help local farmers to improve their production methods with education and such.

South Africa has been enjoying an Oligopolistic advantage for SACU trade. HYUNDAI came and launched in Botswana for manufacturing vehicles. South Africa demanded closure of the plant and moved it to themselves. The same happened for Volvo and Peugeot. South Africa used their populations and technological advancement to shut those automotive industry opportunities. In the front of Agricultural exports, South Africa is grandstanding here. Every country is only as powerful as its export capacity in international trade. SACU has offered vantage to South African monopolies and they benefited from the underdevelopment of Southern Africa. In fact, the thrift of South African business is based squarely on the misfortunes of SADC countries, and this is used by South Africa to buttress positioning toward a Big Brother mentality. We benefit from South Africa as consumers, and they benefit from us as traders. They have gone further to proliferate products through chain store engineering. Our local products , except measly fresh produce, hardly ever land in any of the South African chain stores in our country. You have protected your chain store commodities in patronage to your backward integration, and hardly any of it collaborates with our produce. We even have to buy matches and toilet paper from you. I guess next you shall tell us we can't wipe ourselves without you. Such horrendous diatribe... Because of your production capacity push, you afford cheaper prices. You push large volumes and dump them in a way that disables our economies from taking off. We are starting now what you have been doing for a few centuries. We can't continue to be an economic vassal and an ideological colony. You are not looking for equality. You are seeking in this video to economically patronize us. Posterity will deem us fools who watched a whole future disappear because this man has hurled some threats. We are alive to the fact that we hold the future of our children I the decisions we make. We know you have friends who can engineer poverty for us. That's why you mock Zimbabweans due to their political misfortunes. We must come to the table and discuss this having been equally empowered to share discussions. You are trade partners, not trade parents of disabled children. We are developing comparable competencies for ourselves. I say this with clarity, knowing fully well I am a Motswana with very strong South African roots. I also have South Africans in my family and immediate genealogy, but I don't take nicely on threats.

All our fertilizer, seed, insecticides comes from South Africa. Much more expensive here than there. Our government only closes the border when there is too much of a product here. The problem with European Union is that they politicize their business and that is a very fragile arrangement. Right now if EU gets cornered they can stop imports because South Africa is still in business with Russia and its only tricky because they themselves are still dependent on the Russian energy industry. But those economic sanctions actually have conditions that stifle any other partner from trading with Russia.

If I heard the speaker right, the ethos of the grouping of Southern African states is to grow the agro-ondustrial capacities of the states for an overall stronger regional capacity for trade. If this premise is correct, then the fruit and vegetable industries in these countries need to grow incrementally to at least, some semblance of self sufficiency. If this premise is incorrect, then the dominant producer will produce all the fruit and vegetables it has a capacity to produce and the other states produce what they are best at producing without building capacity in the areas they lack. They then keep trading these for produce they are still weak at producing. THAT doesn't sound right according to what I believe Mr Van derby Heerde initially said the grouping stood for. Obviously, trade mechanism and protocols must be put in place to allow balanced growth in the fruit and vegetables sectors. The beef and mutton sector should not be mixed up in this exchange unless the protocols of the inter-trade encompasses the whole agro-industry product range. I may have heard wrong....

I think it’s great for a country to operate on their own, the must now also pay same price for South African fuel as South Africans or ban fuel supply as well
@Letsweletse_bernard2 жыл бұрын
South Africa doesn't have fuel, it's en-route, Botswana will stop giving South African electricity 😆. Block their trucks and they'll queue for two weeks at Beitbridge🤣

Why??? I'm also South African. If they are doing that to bust the economy of their people, why should be a grudge? That's something that the South African government should aspire to do for its people. Even though the South African farm workers are the ones that are going to feel the impact the most, when these succeed the people lives never really change, only a few on top benefit. Majority of the people are poor and they fight immigrants for scrubs, is it not in line for their governments to build production for their people's sustenance within their borders. South Africa's society is cut between the rich and the poor. Our struggles are not the same, meaning our desires won't be the same. So while the upper class will be imperialising, we killing one another in the streets. Civilization

🥱bro that reason there , is why some countries want to reduce their dependence on South Africa. To you it may sound hilarious but , but SA's drama is seriously hurting the economies of countries that depend on it. Botswana and Namibia are investigating heavily in solar for energy production and export to reduce South African dependence. They are also investing more in their agricultural industry and Botswana itself has been reducing its dependence on the Durban port and going for Walvis bay instead.

You are right SA is going down, the time bomb is ticking. Its important that Zimbabwe and Zambia arise to take over especially in citrus fruits and other food stuffs. We cannot just depend on one country
@nuhuirigo10282 жыл бұрын
Even in importing things from Asia, Europe and USA more countries are using now Dar es salaam port in Tanzania not Durban as it used to be before. The truth is South Africa have much to loose. The only solution is to come up with a system which makes every one benefit. The behavior of one country wanting to gain more than others it is not sustainable.

@OUTDOORS NATIVE BOTSWANA then only Import the "Needed" amount of produce or import other Commodities so that the trade profits of both Countries stays constant according to the previous agreaments while's still supporting local Farmers but don't just ban outright because that will send a message that your not reasonable trade partners And cause Retaliatory response from the other party.
