Discovered a victorian dump at an old house site in the woods that dates back to the 1800s. I didn't include every video clip from this privy dig but put most of them. Found a few bucket lister bottles I've been wanting to find for a while now. Can't wait to see what else this place produces! At first when I was digging the privy I found an old copper!!! I have found coins before while bottle digging but this one is by far the oldest!

Hi, just watched this video, i live in Otago New Zealand, and have dug many of the small medicine bottles the same as the 2 examples in your round up of dug bottles. These are know here is Chinese medicines. Akk examples dug here totaling 60 plus examples have been dug in Chinese dumps. The most amazing example was emerald green, with gold Chinese writing down the length of the bottle. Good and interesting videos

Nice. You can find them online, at your local library, or the archives in your town. The archives will have the most and best information about your town.

Rainy day here in Fla. today, so have been watching bottle digging videos. These guys out in North Dakota dig down 6' to 8' and haven't found glass older than the 1890's . Am fascinated with the ink and opium bottles and the brown jug.. Watched a guy dig out a beautiful very large bean pot @ 7' that didn't have a scratch ! Then you pull out a jug with the handle still pristine ! You guys are awesome !! @

Thanks! First try learning your machine very well and maybe start off at the beach then Try metal detecting old parks. Theres so much history in Toronto that you can find great stuff! But don't get discouraged if it takes you a while to find good stuff. Since metal detecting has been around for like 30 - 40 years most spots have been hit so hard so its harder to find stuff these days compared to back then. But there is still amazing things still to be found. Your first old coin is always the hardest to find! When I first started out it took me a while to find my first old one lol

Good for you!! Some pretty nice finds. A couple of things to keep in mind, The really old stuff is going to be in the deepest areas. Sometimes 6 feet deep, sometimes 12 feet deep. If you ever go deeper than 5 ft. make sure you have a digging partner. My brother was on a dig and at the last minute he got a friend to go with him and that decision to get someone else to go with him saved his life. He was 8ft deep in a hole when the side collapsed on him. If he was alone as he planned he wouldn't be alive. His friend was watching when the walls gave way and buried him. It took his friend a couple of minutes to uncover him and he started CPR on him because he wasn't breathing. That friend is now his full-time dig partner and when digging deep holes they tie off a rope around their waist and only one in a deep narrow hole at a time. Also, you need to add three other digging tools to your dig kit. A hand spade, a single hook ended tool and at least 1=2 5 gallon buckets or boxes to put your finds in. The slicks are keepable too. If you plan on selling any, we leave the clear slicks out in the sun and the light turns them an Amethyst color that sells for a dollar or two. It won't make you rich but will pay for gas to get to your digs. Take a look at the "Adventure Archeology" channel. Besides great finds, he explains how to find dumps and privies. Have fun and be safe!! PS: lookup pressure cracks that can occur if a bottle is brought to the surface to quickly and a pro tip, NEVER pick up old crocks or jugs by the handle. They always break!

Great finds! A couple of tips from someone who has been digging for almost 50 years, get yourself a 3 or 4 prong garden rake and small spade and something like a long screwdriver and bend the first inch or 2 into an L shape. You can find those items at tag sales, estate sales, and, auctions for $1-2.00. You can even shorten the 3 prong rake to 3 feet for when you are in a tight spot. Use the screwdriver for loosening the soil around an object. Please don't use your fingers especially bare fingers. Take it from someone who almost lost part of a finger doing that and especially when your out in the woods. To bend the long screwdriver you need a benchtop vise and a handheld Butane torch. Put the first inch into the vise and heat the area where you want it to bend until it gets red then bend it. Make sure to quench it in some water to help cool it down. Also when digging a dump generally the first 2-3 feet are going to be modern, so you have to go deeper. It looks like you are at an old dump that was never used after 1910 which is not common. Always keep the sides of the hole rounded. They are less likely to collapse as square holes do. Please take this as friendly advice and not criticism. And have fun!! It is so nice to see your generation getting into the hobby. PS- Buy some "Bugie Grit" in pet stores or online (it is crushed clamshells and won't scratch glass). I use about a teaspoon into a bottle and fill with hot water. Shake for a minute or until the crud comes off the inside.
