Where my bottle house is, there are extremely cold winters. The bottles that have no cork/top end up getting water inside them and since they are already cemented into the wall, the only way to extract the water would be difficult (siphon). I am waiting to see if the freezing ice expansion causes any glass cracking. I can't see leaving the bottles open to the elements on purpose as a positive thing, unless you have warm climate all year.

No, it's in northern washington and everything is always just misty. Mostly cold. Of course it won't last forever but the last time I was there for an extended stay there were none of those issues. Surprisingly!

Yes. These are likely to get broken easily. The bottle openings need to be covered and buried into the wall so that insects, spider, dust, water, et cetera don't get in. This appears to be an art project, so the value is to be pretty and probably not practical. Here are some practical bottle windows in homes: s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/2d/57/a1/2d57a191878f3f95e063ade610df368c.jpg flatrock.org.nz/static/frontpage/assets/photographs/window_bottles.jpg s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/15/e3/fd/15e3fd9411ff6278f3401035755ed7e1.jpg

I'd think the darker colors of most of the bottles used would work as a block to the heat, not to mention the wall they are embedded in is cement, which won't let much light/heat in as plain glass. I'd be VERY interested to know how well it does work at retaining heat in the cool of winter and cool in the heat of summer... but nothing on this was mentioned. Which makes me sad. Think of all the bars who would be willing to supply a builder wanting to take their bottles away without charging 'em.

Bottles can be buried in walls but the bottle openings need to be covered and buried into the wall. Otherwise, insects, spider, dust, water, et cetera get in. According to who? You can have fancy bottle walls in pretty much any design you can dream up but as long as the bearing wall supports are not compromised. There has to be a functional base structure established first, base frame can be real rock, real brick, block, cement with rebar, ect... but in between these supports walls that do not support the building can be as fancy as you can get em with no load depending on them, just need to be strong enough to support the wall itself and intruders, etc... I would build a wooden house inside of that huge house shell anyway. lol that huge bottle wall would be awesome buffer from the elements and help with temperatures being a shell inside a shell with a considerable air gap 10' all the way around the small wooden home inside, make a HUGE bottle house similar to this and it just be a shell for over the wooden insulated house inside the shell, like use it for a greenhouse that covers the wooden house. lol Have food growing between that huge structure and the house, it be like the entrance way, huge entrance way into the home, where the entrance

Something I've been curious about is the r value of glass bottles used in this way. How well it keeps the heat in or out, depending. Regular glass blocks that you can buy (for about $20 USD per!) have an r value of between 1.75 and 1.95, with the lower the number being better. The Wikipedia article I found on this gave that rating, as well as .15 for wood and 50 for metal. Yeah, metal's not a very promising building material for insulating homes.
@ThornSleeping9 жыл бұрын
C Chastant just use old bottles you find on the side of the road. talk to friends or family who have some laying around. salvage from recycle bins that are placed on the side of the road. thats the charm to this that each bottle has a story, not just to buy a whole lot of them and stick them on some cob. try this its free and i know u will like it
@cchastant82519 жыл бұрын
Zeke De la Cruz Finding the bottles is not an issue, Zeke; discovering the R value for them was my point. And so far I've not heard one word about how well it keeps the outside temperatures out, and the inside ones in, which is something I'd love to find out.
@Ronnylama9 жыл бұрын
C Chastant Although I have not finished the insulation I do know that it stays comfortable in the heat. The cement in between the bottles is around 8 inches and once the roof insulation is complete (not shown in this video) I will get back with the question. Thanks for watching

It's beautiful indeed! One thing that I don't like (everyone has an opinion, don't we?), is the fact the labels were left on the bottles. I'm sure the builder has their reasons for doing so. I feel the labels take away the beauty of the glass. My 2 cents.
@WadeRothermel10 жыл бұрын
All of the bottles were shared with or provided by friends of Ron's. It isn't an architectural/builder kind of thing: he's an artist. He chose everything. It's actually most beautiful at night from the outside, but this unique POV of the "house" was around noon.

At some point you may wish you had removed the labels and capped the bottles. Mosquitoes will have a breeding hay day with the water that collects in them and stagnation of that water will start to smell. But the idea was beautiful and so is the finished product.

although it is nice, I was thinking the same thing, I would have wasps and hornets filling those bottles with nests! But it is a nice idea, perhaps if it did have sealed-up colored water with a little rubbing alcohol so that it wouldnt freeze, they may help with thermal mass

When the wind blows from a certain direction, the collective sound they make must be amazing. I think the video could only be improved by being a little more ruthless in the length of your shots...I know its hard when its your own footage. I liked the fast panning scenes across the walls. Very 60's, early 70's. Reminded me of the acid trip scene in Easy Rider. Thanks!

Not sure where you're from, but a lot of places in the USA do not actually recycle colored glass bottles, so while this isn't REcycling, per se, it is something called UPcycling, where one takes things that might otherwise end up in a landfill and giving it a new purpose. Seattle =is= better than most places about recycling, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with upcycling something rather than recycling it. So... why is this project pissing you off so bad? It's beautiful and different.
