Economics 101, supply and demand. Alot of people have stopped opening their wallets and it has made a difference. Boubon is coming back down. Also, affecting this, tequila is riding high with their new types of offerings. They see what has done and they want a piece of the pie. Competition is also great for pricing. Maybe this will continue to help level out bourbon. Thanks for all you do.

I totally agree with the tequila take. I have two Costco's in my city, and both are very heavy in their tequila offerings, but only 4-8'ish offerings of bourbon. It shows me that at least in my city, tequila is the more popular of the two.

Interesting phenomena going on right now in Bourbon and whisk(e)y in general. As prices went up, investment and capital investment expanded, supply at those higher prices has exploded. Also, I think demand is not far from being satiated. How many bottles can you physically have at a point? You also had competing brown whiskeys follow suit trying to coat tail ride the bourbon explosion. So a lot of supply, an aging market (cycle age), and we must near the top and maybe over it. Saw this with cigars in the early 2000s. My kids, all in their 20s.....drink white liquor. Their peers drink white liquor. Also seeing more people drinking bottled beer again. I drink bourbon but have a collection of something else. One last point. Bourbon has a narrow flavor palette. The amount of quality bourbon out there is incredible but the difference in flavors does not vary enough if you get what I'm saying. Finished off a bottle of Still630 Rallypoint Rye last night. Enjoyed it, might replenish it. $46 for a 750ml. But might not. Not because it's not great but I have so much else to tap into. I think that's where the market is.

Anecdotally, a lot of people are over the Bourbon fad. The chase, the allocations, the lotteries, the inflated prices, the annoying and exacerbating youbewb and social media hunters, the trash celebrity offerings, etc.,etc. People are more than content with their 4Roses SB and other readily available well priced options. I see more and more Irish Whiskey and Scotch Whisky available. I see, and seethe, at more people entering into rums, my favorite, where 4square has suffered the Buffalo Trace effect: a run on all of their offerings. After all, forever it was the poor man’s scotch and may need a come back to earth moment. People realizing there are fine tequilas, mezcals, and rums to be sipped without the hassle, hype, and inflated price as bourbon… for the time being

I just bought my first Willett 4 year green top and I have to say that the first pour was phenomenal. Definitely worth $60 to be able to explore that bottle. This place by me has a few purple tops for $30 an ounce. And maybe after I finish this I will go and get a couple 1/2 ounces and try the purples. I would not be buying a full bottle of those though because they are so insanely expensive. Maybe if they were $150-200 depending on age I could justify buying one on my birthday or something but not for 300+ because I could get so much more than just that 1 bottle. If I were going to spend that kind of money I would maybe buy a bottle of Redbreast 27 or something.

As far as Whistle Pig goes, the only bottles I buy are the 10yr store picks. At least in my area, those picks tend to be 13-16 years old, cask strength, and still only $90ish. Those are a fantastic value, and I highly recommend them if you find any. One store locally was actually given the opportunity to pick a 19yr finished in PX cask. That was bottled at cask strength in the 18yr decanter bottle. Too rich for my blood, but I did get a sample of that, and it was spectacular. It was basically a single barrel Boss Hog.

Great video, gents. Blue spot is one of my favorites, but I'd never pay more than 180 for it (that includes shipping costs from the UK). I've no idea what's caused the exorbitant price increase in Red and Blue. But I agree neither are worth the money at current prices (299 in Arlington, TX). The Henry Mckenna's a different story for me. I just bought a bottle in WA state and paid 64 bucks....but that includes the ridiculous 20% liquor tax in that state. To me, it's excellent enough that at less than 70 dollars I'll get it. Had I been used to picking it up at 40 bucks a bottle, I may have thought differently. The two most expensive whiskeys I own are a Grey Label Barrel Dovetail and my Jameson Bow St 18 Year Cask strength. Both are close to 250 or so. The Dovetail's wonderful. 50th birthday present..but I wouldn't purchase it again at that price. The Bow St is simply the best Irish Whiskey I've ever had, and I'll happily pay that price again. I've had EW siB that were like the coveted Mckenna 10 barrel that won whiskey of the year. I went back and grabbed more of the same barrel #. A honey barrel of EW is better than most allocated bottles.

The first time I ever bought Henry McKenna 10 Year was back in 2011 for $32 (including tax). That bottle left such an impression being so smooth and easy to drink by itself, with heavy notes of butterscotch, nutmeg and oak. It was my favorite near-premium bourbon for a long time and reminded me of a fresh baked butter sugar cookie. But then in 2019 after they won that world spirit award in SF the quality became inconsistent, hard-to-find, and unreasonably expensive, topping out at $89 where I live during COVID. Things are getting back to normal but McKenna 10yo is still overpriced at $55 imho.

The Evan Williams single barrel is available all over CA, or at least near me, for about $32-35 right now.

I LOVE blue spot but for some reason it doubled in price over night and the new price is unjustified.

I just bought an EW Single Barrel for $34 in Chicagoland area. Rumor that they dropped the price and re-introduced it to the market. I think they tried some type of limited distribution / limited release stuff to try to drive the price up. The one I bought was actually 9 years old..........so.....not terribly far away from the vaunted 10 year bourbons. I hope they keep the trend going. CHEERS!

Willett Purple top MSRPs (as of 3-4 months ago) are $250 for 7-year, $300 for 8-year, $345-350 for 9-year, and $450-500 for 10-year. I haven't seen MSRP on anything higher aged recently.

Old Overholt 114 is under $20 here in Ohio.

I'm not a huge Whistle Pig fan, I do however keep a bottle of the 10yr around. I find that it makes the best Old Fashions. So when I'm really looking for a high end OF, I'll pull it down. When it come to the McKenna, I really enjoy it, 60 is steep for it but for now I'll keep pulling the trigger.

Evan SB is regularly available here in CA for $37 at Total Wine. I bought one last year for $28 at TW when they first came back on the shelves.

Green Spot is still my "frequent pour" (not every day pour) - I get it at the local Total Wine for $47. Redbreast 15 is a favorite weekend pour, but has risen to $100+, and is hard to reach for as often as a result. Same with Nikka Coffey Grain. I've never tried Red or Blue Spot, so won't know what I'm missing. Yellow Spot is $95 here, but I'm not all that keen on that one. And Redbreast 27 - a dream whiskey - ?? Ludicrously priced. A restrauteur friend (Irish Pub) just blocks from our home keeps a Redbreast 27 in stock. After a good evening on the lawn bowling green, sometimes he'll break it out for a celebratory shot. That's the ONLY way I'll ever experience that (utterly amazing) whiskey until the price is, at least, halved from it's current $790+.

I just had some friends over yesterday, I set up a 5 way tasting. Everyone had the Port Perryperry in first or second. It beat Jack 12, CNF, EHT BNB, and JDSBBP Rye. We love the Sagamore port finish, but the Perryperry is special in our friends group

I used to get Henry Mckenna bib 10 year on sale at the Navy exchange for like 18.99 or 19.99. i have a picture from 2017 of a bottle so this was just 7 years ago

Like the other dude said, Whistlepig cask strength barrel picks are very worth it. If you like the flavor profile, you can get a really special bottle and no other distillery has quite the same flavors. But I have no need for the high age statements or Boss Hog. Insane pricing.

I don’t k ow about 3 of them but the McKenna I like, yet hate the price, and the Willet rye is great. That grabbed me from the thumbnail because after reading the description I was like, “Hey, wait a second!” I haven’t had the purple top because I hate price gouging as much as Kurt. I dig this video and would like some more along this line of thinking. “Worth it or not” kind of thing.

Love the channel and content.....Really enjoyed this episode especially due to budgeting....Money is really tight for most American's and you nailed....$50 is where most want to be at and what I have found to be the top bourbon for my palate at that price point has been Bardstown Origin Series Straight Bourbon. It carries so many of the characteristics that I find in bottles that are usually around the $100 price point. Again, thank you for this one guys

I picked up a bottle of the Evan Williams Single Barrel here in Florida for $30 recently. Typically see it for $40 though and I’m still ok with it at that price but not higher than that.

Agree regarding all of these, especially the WhislyPiggy. Have tried it, went Meh on a couple of bottles shared before, but… spent $289 on 15 Year recently with small liquor store owner here, well, just because. I didn’t have WP on shelf and thought 15 year, must be really good, right? It’s okay, but good grief! That is it. One time buy. Never again. Business isn’t built or sustained on one time buyers. I just don’t get this product myself. So many great comments in here about $50 bottles. Appreciate this channel and the people who watch it very much 👊

Evan Williams single barrel is on the shelf at my local store for 32 dollars and the last one I purchased was wonderful. I wonder why the price is so much more in your area.

I wanted a Blue Spot for the cask strength, but I won’t pay that. Haven’t spent much time with Evan Williams. Bought my first HM10 last year. One and done for me. The PiggyBack 6 for $50 is decent. And I like the WP10, but at $90, it falls down my list of ryes. Never bought a Four Gate… too pricey. Enjoyed a sample from a friend. Never had a Willett. Glad y’all are calling out some of the silly pricing in the industry. 🥃💰😡

I bought EW SiB in FL last week for 33 bucks at the large wholesale store you have to pay a membership that starts with a C. Opened and still a fantastic deal (though I do enjoy EW 1783 more).

This a great video! Love holding the vendors accountable for the pricing/value position. And kudos to ditching Willet; can’t be open and transparent with your clients then they don’t deserve the business!

The only Whistlepig bottle i tend to buy is their 6-year, which I think is around $45 here. To me that's a darn good sipper at that price range. I've had the 10-year rye for $80 and I also really enjoyed that, though when you start playing around the $100 price range, there's a lot more I want out of a bottle. I think I'd get it again if the mood struck, though. I've never purchased anything else by the brand. I cannot imagine paying more than $150 for a bottle of bourbon at this point. Anything over $80 and you start hitting pretty hard diminishing returns.

Henry McKenna is $79 in Texas. I bought mine 6months ago for $59 but would never buy one for the current price. Sagamore is one of the best whiskeys for the money IMHO. Their new Small Batch is $33 Double Oak is $57 and 8 Year is around $65. All of them are just EXCELLENT.
