Ah my second bike. 1986 Shadow 500 in that same red. Yep, I'm old enough to have bought it new. That was one absolutely fantastic motorcycle. Shaft drive, water cooled with auxiliary fans that would kick on when needed. Extremely comfortable on road trips with a very smoooooth ride. One caveat -- passengers had to learn NOT to attempt using that little back jabbing spine breaker as an actual backrest and more of a butt stop.

My first street motorcycle ever, and the one that I learned on, was a 1985 Honda Shadow 500 back in 2003. I loved that bike. It was light yet snappy. I rode the heck out of it and did all my young "hooliganing" on it. It had a well done custom paint job, navy blue with silver flames. She was a looker. Ended up selling it for double what I paid for it. Now days I ride a Vulcan 900, but I still miss that bike sometimes.

These old Hondas (including the magna) have un potted CDI units so you can open them up. The solder joints inside crack causing intermittent spark
@tristan63515 жыл бұрын
prawny12009 same with the old Yamahas. My first bike was a 1985 virago 700 and randomly the front cylinder would cut out. I’d be cruising down the highway with my buddies and then bam, there I was going 40 mph on the interstate. New cdi fixed it. It’s funny now but sure wasn’t back then lol
@prawny120095 жыл бұрын
@@tristan6351 my dad's magna would drop the rear cylinders and rev counter periodically, the power output wire to the coil had a cracked solder joint on the circuit board. The magna is good because they have seperate CDI for front and rear banks, I just swapped the plugs under the seat and the misfire moved to the front cylinders. The wire colours and layout reminded me of a dc Honda cub or pitbike CDI wiring, there is a good chance a DC CDI form one of those could work.

You've bought the cheapest bike at the auction but they're also one of the best bikes ever made. Best bike Honda ever made in my opinion. Dont sell it for peanuts. Bikers who know their bikes and build custom bikes will chew your arm off for a good condition VT500 or VT700 as they make an excellent bobber. They sell for between 1500 euro and 3000 euro over here in Ireland in that condition. I just finished restoring my own 85 VT700 which was imported from the US. Personally I think you should keep this bike and do a full restoration/custom bobber build on it. It would make a great video. They're technically simple to work on and crazy reliable. The quality of parts that went into those bikes back then by Honda doesnt happen anymore. The only weak point on those bikes is the rear swingarm. The box metal part in front of the rear tyre wasnt welded properly so water gets in and they rust from the inside out so nowadays most of them need to be taken off and welded up to repair so they are road safe. Check the frame on the left side near where the swingarm mounting bolt screws in as it may have a large rust hole as well near the original kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnSrmX6rlt6nn7M

Brilliant, i feel the same way, the vt500 is a fantastic bike, just a shame alot of people don't seem to know this, like a smaller magna nearly, everyone that rides one is surprised at how quick they can be, especially for an 80s cruiser, engine lasts forever, 6speed, shaft drive, it's a great bike overall.

I bought an 82 VT750 for 500 on Ebay. It had like 5K miles on it. I drove from Granby, CT to Deary New Hampshire and loaded it in the back of my truck. I rode that bike for like 10 years. I rode the crap out of that bike, rain, snow, sleet, and all weather. I changed the oil one a month. The most expensive thing I ever had to do was replace the stator for 300 dollars. It was shaft drive and there really wasn't much in the way of maintenance beyond tires and brake shoes. I sold it to a Harley Tech at Gengras HD in East Hartford when I bought my FLSTF in 2001 and he chopped it. That bike is still on the road and it never had valve job, or any kind of rebuild. You can't kill a honda shadow for nothing. I have had my FLSTF since 2001 and at 65K I replaced the cams, tensioner, and oiler to be upgraded to modern specs but that's it on the FLSTF.

Shawnangunk where you located? I work at a large auto dealership and if it works properly it would be good for some of our customers who can’t walk the lot!!

Bryan Bailey 😂😂😂😂😂 Need a cohort? I can use one of those cart things you put your leg up on when you have a bum stump and scoot around. We could use it as a distraction! It would really F them up!! 🤣

Check your coils and wires. Had an 87 and it cut out at high speed. Because someone else had a similiar bike had replaced their coils; I figure that was what mine needed. Sold the bike later because did not need four bikes.

Bought a bike for cheap on craigslist. Got in a rush and didn't put the air filter box back on when I was trying to adjust the carbs. One was overflowing and I didn't notice until the engine backfired. And that's how a $400 and 4 day project turned into many months of work in about a minute.

That will make someone a very nice city cruiser! You mentioned 2 bikes I have owned as well, a V45 Sabre and a Magna. Great bikes, loved 'em both. I only made one mistake with the Sabre. I took it on a road trip from Atlanta to Virginia Beach. It was cold, but that didn't hurt me until it started to rain. Talk about ugly. The worst part was the seat. It felt like a porcupine splitting me in half. But, I made it in one piece, and it got me home without ANY trouble. I didn't own the Magna long enough to do anything with it, unfortunately (I wasn't riding as often as I would've liked, so I sold it).

You are going to get lots of weirdos calling and texting you after putting your number out there like that.

Hey I'm late to the game but this is the first bike my dad ever took me on a ride with. I have nothing to trade but would love this bike for so many reasons.

I play pool in biker bars and my first bike was a Shadow 600. I still miss that thing sometimes! Great little bike to get around town on. Fill it up on Monday for $5 and ride it all week!

My first bike was an ‘84 Suzuki GS550L. It was an In-line 4 but other that that it was almost identical to that Honda.
