Did you delete my wall of text 9/11 comment? Here's a more rigorous/less mythological one either way: For the physics/engineering minded here's all the proof you need and what convinced me it had to have been a controlled demolition: the buildings fell too fast. You can't use gravitational potential energy to both accelerate the falling building and destroy the building beneath it, the falling building smashing into the building below it should slow the fall speed. Since the buildings fell within a few seconds of free fall in a vacuum that means the structural integrity of the buildings had to be destroyed some other way. You can calculate the vacuum freefall time and compare it to video of the fall to see it's only a couple seconds difference. A steel and concrete building weakened by fire should still absorb much more energy in its collapse than the wtc buildings did, which should slow the fall time and prevent them from collapsing into their own footprint, but that's not what happened. If you don't trust a KZbin comment on this and don't have the laws of motion/conservation of energy knowledge to check it yourself, you can read plenty of writing by civil engineers on this topic. Most of it is independent e.g. letters written in response to the crap NIST report(and to NISTs credit, still hosted on their website), but there's also the university of Alaska investigation of the wtc 7 collapse if you prefer a more formally academic approach.

I am a hardcore stealth gamer. I have played Deus Ex recently with the rules of "no KO, no kill and no augs or invisibility items (thermotic camo)". I only had to use cloak once as the AI got glitched. I have studied the stealth AI extensively and done a lot of experiments and found out some really interesting stuffs that I haven't seen anyone talking about and you also made a bit of a mistake. The stealth system is actually simplified version of Thief stealth system both in sight and sound. Metal does make more noise than other floors and grass makes the least sound. But it is not as well implemented as Thief. NSF AI is dumber than MJ12 troops and commandos. The levels with NSF also helpful towards player with very little metal floor and lots of darkness. People say the AI is bad but I would say also pretty interesting and it's good that it is like this. Because of this AI I have been able to pull of some stealth tactics that no other games allow. those tactics are not easy. It took almost a week to figure some of those out and they were only possible because of the AI. But the AI also have one bad thing. If a level have a lot of AI guards with specific patrol, their patrol pattern stops when the player is out of the range were player can here footstep or see the guard. I guess its for saving memory. The problem is it doesn't happen on the other side of the map. It happens just outside of the range where I can here footstep sound. But despite the issues I love Deus Ex. It's one of my favourite games of all time.

I have been god-ghosting through the levels lately (console commands) and while I played this game so many times, I still find things. Just a few days ago, I noticed a secret closet/room behind some bookshelves in ghost mode and couldn't immediately figure out how to get inside legit. Finally figured out it was a nearby pinball machine that activates the secret passage. As far as I know, this is the only pinball machine in game that acts as a trigger. As you mentioned, no matter how much you play this game, you can just never be sure you found every thing to see, do or collect.

One of the creepiest areas in the game is out of bounds. After the first level, return to UNATCO HQ and get to the other side of the wall (you can use the jump aug to get onto the security hut), then return to the area from the start of the game. The whole of the docks is missing, and the entry building is now a large hollow shell. I got bad vibes from that place, and it felt weird knowing that the docks had just vanished from existence.

The reason Deus Ex is the best game ever has nothing to do with gameplay mechanics, graphics or anything like that. The reasons are simply the story and the mechanics surrounding it. There are many winks to historical events, actual conspiracy theories, literature and political philosophy, putting the game world into a context that makes it seem vast and mysterious. The people behind this are obviously educated. The story of the game is very enjoyable even after almost 25 years, because the subjects it tackles are timeless. Compare this to the story of the latest Deus Ex games, that mostly consisted of lazy allegories and tropes based on shallow representations of some of the material from the first game, not dealing at all with the questions posed by it. The latest sequels have a game world that feels claustrophobic because there is so little material. The first game has a much more complex world that feels enormous, and triggers your imagination so that you feel like you want more.

This is such an amazing game, it's too bad it cannot be made again. Something like Deus Ex can only happen once in a lifetime, and what a shame that is. If games today were still about creativity and making a good game instead of just making money, perhaps a game that could top Deus Ex in what it did would have a chance to emerge from the shadows.

@@_Yanovsky_ It’s alright, we are all entitled to our own opinions. I personally don’t think video games these days are as great as they used to be, and it’s not because of nostalgia either - I’ve played Deus Ex for the first time only last year. There will always be great games, indie developers can make such even today, but large companies these days have been complacent with finding more ways to monetize their newest titles instead of ways to innovate them. A lot of them simply repeat what’s been done many times before. Deus Ex was released all the way back in 2000, and the gaming industry is completely different now. There is next to zero chances for a game that could top Deus Ex in the way it’s designs mesh together for an intricate experience to come out today, because that’s not what the big corporations and wide audiences want. This is the reason why I believe Deus Ex is a once in a lifetime occurrence. You can feel free to disagree with me, I am here to simply share my own thoughts on the matter at hand.
@nomad9584

I agree, and it's the reason I've personally gone back to older games ageing back 8-15 years. You only need to look at the absolute garbage that is churned out by Bethesda, EA, and other mainstream developers to know that modern gaming has taken a turn for the worst. The rampant focus on micro-transactions and NFT's by developers, as well as the release of games that are only partially finished is a for-sure sign that profit has been prioritised above all else. Just look at Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk, or the latest Battlefield as a few examples. Alas, there are still gems out there that manage to capture lightning in a bottle, like Fallout New Vegas, the Metro series, Bioshock, Doom Eternal, Dead Space, etc. What's sad though is that these games are typically produced by smaller developers with limited time and budget and are inevitably disbanded. The irony is that the the more 'indy' games companies are the ones truly capturing lightning in a bottle because they're passionate about creating something special.

@@superplayerex2431 One thing I will agree is that for the most part, AAA games are not being made with purely creativity in mind. Deus Ex was AAA for its time and the game was built on a whim almost, Specter wanted to make his game and was given the money and liberty to do so without question. You literally could not see a situation like that happening in AAA today, there always has to be a catch somewhere, a lot of these games get "focus grouped" before there's even a chance of them being greenlit.

For me Deus Ex is an evolution of the original System Shock because it went in the most compelling path than other games in the genre: not by adding rpg elements that take over the gameplay itself but that are more "flavour" to the experience. The main focus is the level design, the enviroment, story, action itself. The weapons, the options. Other games like SS2 focus more on stats, waiting for the "level up" and limiting actions as much as possible within the requirements of certain numbers. I like more the challenge of finding gear that can help me more than building up points to unlock stuff. Playing Deus Ex doesn't make you think about the next augmentation unlock, you are more immersed in the world, what you see in front of you. The problem with immersive games is about the work required for the maps: you can complete them within few minutes if you don't care about exploring everything but at the same time you need to provide a complex layout. I spent 90 hours going every place in Deus Ex Mankind Divided but i guess a normal player would not do that. The same for Dishonored games and so on. I feel like the average player doesn't much value that kind of design (and sales show) so devs are kinda reluctant to apply the same effort again. But i can see smaller titles doing it, maybe focusing on smaller maps (like 5 instead of 15) with more involved dynamics (not reaching point A, B and C then move to the next level but more complex logic) and experimenting with the balance of rpg/unlocks and actions/gear. For me the rogue-lite direction of Arkane it's not much interesting (repetition over immersion), hopefully Weird West is more in line with what i like.

The three endings to me always represented three broad viewpoints: - Tracer Tong ending is the belief in humanity to be good and do the best for themselves... when the masses have the power. The belief in the mob. - Illuminati ending is the belief in humanity to be good and do the best for themselves... when the elites have power. The belief in the oligarchy. - Finally, the Helios ending is the belief that humanity CANNOT be trusted to guide their own fate, regardless of who has power. The belief in the God from the Machine.

Helios ending is that humanity cannot construct a proper government or leadership structure that will work truly in the peoples interests. It’s like the conversation that JC has with that other AI that states something about how the formation of government is already an admission by humanity that they cannot lead and regulate themselves. If what Helios says is true in that it will genuinely reflect the desire of the people and allocate resources reflectively then in a way it would become the absolute perfect democratic system. Every voice is heard and everyone is helped. It would be sort of like a democracy processor that removes the human error from leadership.

Fun-fact: if you're holding a potted-plant when you approach Manderly, then when it cuts to an automatic conversation, you'll involuntarily throw the plant at him. Also, I accidentally saved Paul in his apartment once. It was the second or third time playing through, and I knew that all these MJ12 Soldiers were going to spawn in the lobby of the "ton", so I set up a bunch of proximity tear-gas, and when they set it off, I went and head-shot them all from the balcony so I could gather up their loot. Later in Hong Kong, Paul was still alive. So that was cool.

When I reinstalled it to play it again I then realized the maid wasn't scripted. This made me realize just how many choices you could make about going about things. I'm not calling them paths to choose because the levels weren't just paths for you to take. They were diverse environments with various objects and sections of the map for you to interact with however you wanted, while being accompanied by various upgrades (augs) to your character expanding the possibilities.

One thing I really appreciate about the very first Deus Ex versus the "Human Revolution" one is that they gave you a number of limitations that you *could not* overcome. As in, you could not max out ever aug, so choosing one necessarily removed another as a choice, or, at the very least, you could never have enough to upgrade ALL that you had. It meant that your end-build was a compromise... and you would have to play through again if you were curious about a different build. In Human Revolution, you could max out *everything* .... and your final-build was the same each and every time, *and* it was identical to everyone else's. It didn't force you to play to your build-style, because a maxed-out build let you handle the entire mission, or just a particular aspect of a mission, as either a tank OR ninja. Contrast that to the first Deus Ex, and your build-style heavily influenced your play-style (and vice-versa), in that if you weren't tanked-out, you couldn't expect to handle a heads-on, gun-blazing encounter with a heavy. You invested in stealth? _You HAVE to use that._ It made HR very linear, even though it didn't feel linear the first time you played it. Your choices were very contrived, with little repercussions for however you chose. It did get better with Mankind Divided in that choices did matter more... but you still had the same issue with being able to max out everything (or close enough that it didn't matter), and choosing one type of build didn't bit-by-bit shut you out of a different build style. But it still wasn't as extreme as with the first Deus Ex.

There's ways around that. Shoot through missions, don't go non-lethal, don't be stealthy, go for body-kills. Minimise your XP gain. Praxis kits will come much more slowly, and it makes for a good roleplay. But yes, without that, HR lets you max out too easily.

This game has been battered and abused painfully regarding the credit it truly deserves. Only developers and us dorks appreciate it to it's caliber. It's sad that when Human Revolution was coming out, Mass Effect fanboys were all over it calling it a rip off. And to this day, some people still think it is. The only way to make up for the lack of a 3rd game in the Eidos Montreal franchise (assuming it's over, over) is to make a Deus Ex movie finally.

As you can tell from my name and profile picture, Smuggler was my favourite ahah but JC will always remain my hero, I really loved this game, I finished it countless times.. the whole soundtrack, the story, the environments, the characters. I started playing it because my father, many years ago, used to buy magazines that talked about computers and computer science in general and one day they gave a free copy of Deus Ex GOTY along with the magazine... at the beginning I didn't understand the game very well, I was quite small, I went around shooting randomly and I never read Alex Jacobson's messages... How many emotions it gave me... I'm glad to see it's still being talked about today, nice video!

that meme is so old that it predates 480p youtube videos, fast internet and mainstream "terabyte" hard drives. Most people had a few gigabytes of hard drive when the game came out. Again the game is super old. So back then you had limited space and everyone saved things in cds. Many years later the first usb sticks came out, 256mb of data and they were as large as a car key, look for example how big the keyring or the data pads are in the game or the electric prod, the only thing it got right was the ultrawide multiscreen computer monitors. On top of having limited install space on your hard drive the game also needed the cd in the tray to play. This is why people uninstalled it.

As a game developer this game has inspired me for so many years it showed me not only how to make a good game but more importantly how to write a good story. Ever since ive been trying to replicate that feeling that you get when you discover something that feels like you werent supposed to discover or when you beat an objective a different way than the obvious objective. To me, thats what made Deus Ex great. Its ability to give you choice while also presenting you with a phenominal story that you happened to put together yourself. Sadly you just dont see these type of games anymore and companies like Square Enix only care about a quick cash grab and dont actually care about the masterpieces they have the potential to make. Just imagine the original Deus Ex with modern graphics and combat mechanics. You wanna know why nobody has actually done it yet? It's extremely hard. It was super hard to make 3D games back then and its even harder to do it today. I guess what I'm trying to say is that for me, Deus Ex was something that I dont think I will ever get to experience freshly in my lifetime (a game so similar to its game mechanics and the way it operated, not the exact story).

I really like JC's lip smacking and tongue clicks, its not good voice acting manners but it makes him sound more real. Its a verbal tick someone might actually have. You ever notice no one in video games ever stutters or says a wrong word unless its played for a laugh? But its such a huge part of how organic conversations are paced? The lip smacking makes him sound more natural, but it doesn't waste time by having him re-state information.

Edit : Bonus points for having Wings and DSP in the episode. And your take on this game was absolutely SUPERB. @Skeletor I think when he bashes games though or has negative opinions, I don't know if it's the way he delivers (smirkiness etc) that makes it really unbearable to watch compared to when others do it. Its so weird cause I really LOVED many of his videos and watched a lot of them, and then when I started listening close to a new one and was just like wtf is this opinion, he kept doing it over and over, until I stopped watching. The denial of reality in order to maintain their sanity in a world that has gone insane. I remember how Paul Krugman out of all people said that there is some study that says if people are presented with proof they are wrong they dont change their mind, they double down due to insecurity, i wonder if he understood how this applies to him when he said that. Just have one of your friends and family play or watch you play deus ex and when the conspiracy stuff pop ups tell them "listen" and they will go "wtf? this is happening now" then remind them when this game was made.
