This channel is focused on Bones, Hormones, and Healthspan to help midlife women and beyond aim for optimal, not average, and reignite their spark!
The videos on this channel will be focused around helping women navigate healthspan and longevity through the lens of osteoporosis, perimenopause, and menopause. When it comes to osteoporosis and menopause providers and educators often get tunnel vision and your symptoms might get better, but if you don't keep longevity in mind, symptom improvement may come at the expense of heart and brain health.

I was about to buy a mini trampoline. But i asked my surgeon first. He did 2 hip replacements 2 years ago. He told me that rebounding is a high impact exercise which might hurt my hips or back, because i had compression fractures before.

Apparently the flexibility of bones is better than simple bone density which might mean more brittle bones for avoiding breaks when falling. I don’t know how flexibility of bones is determined, tho.

I've done a rebounder 4-5 times a week for 19 years (wore the first one out!) for cardio. It lowered my PA pressures to normal. So I'm stuck with it, whether I like it or not. The good thing is, it can be done at home, isn't dependent on weather, and I can watch your videos while jogging. 😊 Just getting started on your Platinum program, and I know I'll be in good hands.

Great information. Any thoughts on exercising for bone health using a pilates reformer/machine?
@magpiegirl3783
@magpiegirl3783 11 ай бұрын
Personal opinion here: Reformer pilates under the guidance of a qualified instructor - preferably a physiotherapist - offers resistance training, balance, mobility and postural adjustment but not much in the way of impact. There have been some small trials looking at pilates and pilates reformer exercises with varying results regarding bone density, but good outcomes with balance, strength and postural improvement - that’s all good. I’ve been doing reformer pilates for a few years and don’t think there’s been bone density improvement, however, my thoracic mobility and reduction in kyphosis have been significant. I’m certain had I not been doing this form of exercise at the time my bones were losing mineral (unaware of it at the time) that my spine particularly would be seriously in bad shape. I’ve had a reduction in back and neck pain because I’m stronger and straightening up. I actually bought a reformer because it’s something I intend to use the rest of my life. I also have a great Physio who understands osteoporosis and she gives me properly structured routines that progress me. Very happy.

HI Karen and Magpie girl, Great input from Magpie Girl! I agree with all of that and view the work the same. I love reformer work and a new style from a company called Lagree. It is great resistance, balance, core etc. I've looked at some research and the change in BMD when pilates is used exclusively is not that impressive but I wouldn't expect it to be. It lacks significant gravity forces and impact. Ultimately though, we want to prevent falls and build strong bones. We are more than BMD.

Hi. Being 61 and 95 lbs my entire life at 5'0"...I got a -4.2 spine dexa. Reputable Medical sites mention flawed results for extreme height on the dexa. 3 doctors later and no one will talk about this statement to me. Doc recommended tymlos. No height loss ever and i ski and skate with falls this year yet have not broken anything. So frustrated. Why would my bones look like the dexa average woman. Why are we not checking bones at 35, 52 and 65...? (To compare with ourselves always and not the average height and weight. ) Thx for all your efforts !

Hi Lisa, Totally understand your frustration and you are correct. There is concern about DEXA and people at the ends of the height spectrum. This is a weakness of medical research in general. Consider looking at our imaging video for more information but what you seek is information about your bone quality. There are a few mays to attempt to get that but it's not easy. Consider joining our masterclass for more information and the ability to ask questions about drugs and alternative options.

I searched for this video because I have terrible degenerative disc disease with a grade 2 spondylolisthesis of the L4/5 with a complete loss of disc. I’m a life long exerciser with an emphasis on strength training. My question is in regards to using a mini trampoline as a form of cardiovascular training, will that just further aggravate my back issues and my newly diagnosed severe hip arthritis? Haven’t met with a back specialist yet so I can’t ask and declined a referral for hip replacement for now. Thanks in advance.

Hi Rhonda. Possibly. Grade two spondy is likely stable but please consult with someone that knows this area well. Trampolines are effective tools for balance and fall prevention but there are many tools for cardiovascular health.

Thank you, Dr. Lucas. For the awesome videos of many subjects on osteoporosis. You are the best. I live in New Zealand, and I have been diagnosed (by Dexa) with minus 3 on my lumber spines & osteopania of the hip. The specialist physician & endocrinologist from Dexa suggested taking zoledronate or bisphospphonate or zolendronate, etc. I am so worried about the side effects of the drug. Do you agree to use the drug to prevent fractures in the future? Or can diets & exercise prevent fractures? Would you like to explain about the drugs? Thank you very much for reading my suggestion.

Hello, Drug videos coming. I’m general I don’t like drugs that suppress metabolism of bone. Bisphosphonates and Prolia fit that category. There is a role for these drugs but our approach is to figure out why you are losing bone and to reverse those causes of bone loss and support bow growth. That is possible and we do it every day. Consider our masterclass as a next step in your journey. Don’t worry about the time gap we will send you a link to a recording of the presentation.

What about an elliptical machine Does that qualify as a weight bearing exercise?
@Dr_DougLucas
@Dr_DougLucas 8 ай бұрын
Weight-bearing yes, but not with any impact. I have not seen any specific studies on elliptical and bone health but my guess is it would be somewhere between walking and cycling, which is not particularly promising. There is value in the exercise, but probably not a major component of a bone building program.

It is a shame that the one study published re rebounding and BMD was only a 12 week study and therefore not very informative. I cannot help but think that if NASA allegedly used trampolines to restore the BMD of astronauts, that there must be something to that practice. I"ve not been able to locate any studies done by NASA however.

Hold the phone. I found a "report" by NASA re trampoline exercise, but then found a newer article on the NASA site saying that the agency is/was exploring the use of resistance training with some special device to restore or maintain astronaut bone in space. Resistance training wins, once again. LOL.

@@janiceolch9301what did the NASA report say about trampoline?
@janiceolch9301
@janiceolch9301 2 ай бұрын
@@shar7508 I am going to paraphrase, Shar, because I don't have the articles / studies right in front of me. One takeaway was that back in the days of shorter flights to space, NASA used trampoline "therapy" to restore lost bone density of astronauts who had been out of the earth's gravitational field for an extended period. The article did not go into details about how the trampoline was used. More recently, now that astronauts can be in a space station for months, NASA had to devise another way of maintaining bone density since a trampoline is useless in a gravity free space. So NASA devised something that uses resistance that astronauts can use while in the space station. Again, no details were given. And somewhere I also saw that someone (NASA? someone else?) measured G forces at the foot/ankle, maybe knee and/or hip, and upper body or head while jumping on a trampoline and demonstrated that G forces are evenly distributed while jumping, not just concentrated in the lower body. Sorry to not have more details to offer.

We use in our clinic in conjunction with therapeutic dosage of nutrition to strengthen Cerebro-Spinal System C1-7 of our clients with pinched nerves caused by osteoporosis. The bone get bigger, thicker causing the foramen magnum to get smaller and impinge on spinal nerves running through it.
