So, as a medical professional, calcium is not the main thing that will cause or prevent osteoporosis. This was a red flag for me in watching the rest of the video. The keys to actually preventing osteoporosis are to NOT smoke, to stop drinking alcohol and to stay active! You cannot eat or take calcium and make a huge difference! Frankly, most Americans ingest too much calcium.
@tans30153 жыл бұрын
@@newlife8318 The problem usually is not intaking enough calcium. Calcium is naturally in many foods, and many others have been fortified with it. It is usually the lack of vitamin d, without vitamin d your body won't be able to use the calcium you intake. There aren't many food sources that have vitamin d (canned salmon with bones and egg yolks), so a person either needs to get their 15 minutes of sun exposure or supplement with vitamin d. There are also certain groups of people who are more likely to have hypocalcemia: vegans, chronic steroid use, those with IBS or celiac disease.

@andreah6379 Жыл бұрын
A word of advice from a 67yo with Osteopenia. It's not a good idea to down a lot of Calcium like you're doing! It can build up in your arteries and give you heart problems or a stroke. You need to get the calcium through the food you eat. That's the safest way. There's different kinds of calcium. Calcium Carbonate is common & difficult to digest and absorb. Calcium Citrate is better but, again you need the proper foods--not heavy dose pills. Vitamin D, a fat soluble vitamin builds up in your body & too much can be a problem. You don't say how much you take. 2000IU/day should be enough. More than that a day you may be playing with fire. As far as exercise to ward off bone loss disease, you need weight-bearing exercise like walking up a hill, jogging, weight lifting. There are lots of exercises that don't build bone. Do some research. Lots of us as we get older are suffering from fractures, pain, and severe side effects in case you think taking osteoporosis drugs are helpful. They are a nightmare!! Take better care of yourself now. It pays off later. Believe me.

The calcium in dairy products is very poorly absorbed by the bones. The people who consume the most dairy are the worst off. Look at the countries where they have very little and their diet is mainly vegetarian with lots of dark green leafy vegetables. The best supplemental calcium are citrate and glycinate. Other minerals such as boron should also be in a comprehensive formula. And don't forget magnesium (not oxide) is needed also.

Thanks for the info but so many other sources say do not take calcium carbonate, as so poorly absorbed? With risks to heart health. Calcium citrate is supposed to be better absorbed ? Would love to hear more on this subject as I have osteopenia and have been offered hrt at 67 yrs old. Not taking yet but considering doing so. Confused.

Vitamins D is so confusing. I used to take only 1000 a day but was told to take 5000 a day due to no exposure to sun. But if it’s bad for the bones that’s a problem right ? I don’t want to take too much and make my bones worse in the long run. Thank you so much !

My physican placed me on 50,000 IUs of Vitamin D once a week for 8 weeks after a bone density test. I have been low on Vitamin D for several years. However, here it is said that too much Vitamin D is harmful. Also, if I am out in the sun for 15 minutes a day, why am I still deficient in Vitamin D; is location on hemisphere also a factor? Good information here at any rate.
@climateanxiety282511 ай бұрын
I had the same issue. My D was almost nonexistent. I had other symptoms and a really good doctor caught it (after decades of them missing it) and it turns out that I have Celiac Disease. And no, I was not on the Fad band wagon. It came as a complete shock. You can be on a huge dose like your doctor gave you for a short time, but you should be on a lower daily dose after that at around 1000IUs. What he said is that too much D can make your bones brittle. I will have to check out the research on that one.

I want to know when I was 40 years old I was doing lot of cycling then after my knee bones started paining so badly, now I have same problem now I am 50 years old, I am doing 3000 skipping and other workouts till 4 hours but my pain is not going, Is it a bone loss?
@magpiegirl37832 жыл бұрын
Skipping should be a great exercise for bone remodelling. If you are doing weight training, that could be good too depending on how you are doing it. Would suggest getting to the doctor … bone loss is definitely happening just because of your age, but the pain could be arthritis or other problem. Doctor should help with the diagnosis. However, you might also be overdoing the exercise. Would suggest a qualified physical therapist to monitor your exercise program once you’ve seen a doctor to try to work out if there’s another problem.

Our friendly neighborhood pharmacist seems to be a little bit behind the times. They are now recommending less calcium for women because that can drive heart attacks because the calcium does not get into the bone but stays in the blood. So for women they're now saying 500 mg a day in a capsule and then plus food of course. He also did not mention boron at all which surprised me. One of the things about K2 is that it does definitely help vitamin d get calcium into the bones but as he said you have to be careful depending on what drugs you're taking and what your personal genetics are.

I think he is sometimes way off. He really said that 15 minutes outside is worth 49 days of vitamin D. This can't be serious. And if you take a certain dosis of vitamin D, this doesn't mean that the same dosis ends up in your blood. The real level in your body is important.
@bsmith93264 жыл бұрын
WHAT... 15 mins of sunshine gives me 49 days of Vit D. That rocks! Thanks!
@smokinokin664 жыл бұрын
That's a blanket statement that does not ring true for everyone. Factors like where you live (Florida vs. say Chicago) - your weight, your skin tone, how your body absorbs Vitamin D, your age.....lots of factors to take into consideration - so check with your doctor! One person in my town can take 1000 daily, while another needs 2000 daily. Each person absorbs things differently. Get a blood test from your healthcare provider and check your D levels.

Is rebounding and pilates reformer exercising good for rebuilding bones?
@magpiegirl37832 жыл бұрын
Pilates reformer is brilliant …. IF you have sufficient resistance. Must have a pilates trainer specialising in osteoporosis. Rebounding is a good cardio exercise but not sufficient to stimulate bone remodelling. Swimming and walking are the same … good exercises but not sufficient for bone improvement in people with osteopenia or osteoporosis.
