Of all the things that are neat about this boundary break, I'm most shocked that the areas are way thinner and more angled than you'd expect, so as to create the illusion of depth while, presumably, allowing the player to move faster forward and backward across the area.
@LeafRazorStorm8 жыл бұрын
NOOOOO YOU KILLED THE ILLUSION!!! But really, I just love how they completely crunched the dimensional logic of the game to save polygon space. Really made the most of 42 megabytes.
@ethanvalencia15008 жыл бұрын
It's fascinating, but I can't really tell what's going on lol. I no longer have a concept of space in this game haha
@Cyber_Akuma3 жыл бұрын
It's not really a cartridge space issue. 3D geometry itself takes very little space. Textures can take up space but unless they are unique textures than just re-using existing textures also would not add much space. It's to save on processing power. Early 3D systems could not push a lot of polygons, so developers generally tried to make the system only draw the most necessary polygons needed and generally avoided anything extra or would not be seen.
@SendyTheEndless8 жыл бұрын
What's weird with this game is that when you move the camera, everything seems to go into reverse perspective! By that, I mean that the vanishing point is near the viewer and things get larger as they move into the distance. This is an art style I'm fascinated by, so this whole episode is such a treat for that reason :) If you do a search for "true reverse perspective" on KZbin, you can see someone's project of rendering an entire scene in this kind of perspective. It's trippy.
@sethfinley83788 жыл бұрын
The reason why the shy guy appears so far under the map is becuase this is the way the game stores models for cutscenes, it keeps the model 128 units under the map and teleports it to it's needed place.
@randomcatdude7 жыл бұрын
1000, not 128.
@obsidianchao8 жыл бұрын
I think the most fascinating part of this episode is the way all the 3D models are designed to provide a psuedo-isometric view of the environments. Genius way to do that. That's not something most games would bother with; seems like moving the camera is easier, but Nintendo didn't cheap out. I'd love to see Timesplitters 2 next!

For the record, they aren't sprites; They're models compressed to look like sprites. The same technique is used for Mr. Game and Watch in Smash Bros.
@niklasfelder288 жыл бұрын
Adam Rhodes Not. They are sprites. Why? Try dumping their textures and you will see that their whole body will be dumped. TTYD on the other hand is a bit different.
@niklasfelder288 жыл бұрын
Kid Sheldon When dumped you get their body parts. Changing them is almost impossible. Recoloring is easy, but lets say turning Mario into Luigi. That is impossible because of how their parts are aligned.
@PlusInsta7 жыл бұрын
That's what made TTYD and SPM unique. Take Sticker Star for instance: even if the sprites are broken up in multiple pieces, it's made up of stop motion animations which render them useless. Only a small minority of animations are linear, most of them being for bosses and Toads. For the record: Mario only has two frames for walking in Sticker Star, meanwhile the original had enough to make it seamless on the Nintendo 64.

Puff under the clouds before his fight - Some of the spooky mirror business in the Crystal Palace - Spooky shots of the cavernous interiors and fortress exteriors of Bowser's Castle - The emergence of Dry Dry Ruins from the Desert floor - The track taken by the train in Chapter 2, and the other train in Chapter 4 Keep on loving games!

@GreatlordShadox8 жыл бұрын
Hm. Any idea as to why that is? I'm not well-versed in coding, much less rendering, but I really wouldn't think that it would render like that without the game explicitly telling it to.

What can ya do, eh? At least with Paper Mario it isn't as big of a deal since so much of it is simple geometry and flat sprites, but I can't imagine if the camera was really bad with a game like Shadows of the Empire or Donkey Kong 64 that relies much more on models. (And no, I wasn't implying I wanted you to do videos on those. Sure, it'd be interesting, especially Shadows of the Empire, but they were just the first model-heavy N64 games I thought of)

Odd how when you rotate the camera in this game the perspective gets all weird, when it wasn't an issue at all in TTYD. Also still hoping for a Kirby Return to Dreamland episode. Lots and lots of fully 3d backgrounds with cool structures and landscapes that you don't get a good look at. There's also a big futuristic city at one point with tons of weird paths and broken bridges spread about.

What's interesting about that opening bit on Parakarry is how he stays up top. Why its interesting is often times the unused assets are left 1000 blocks or in-game mathematical equivalent (I'm not sure the term here this early in the morning). So for example, the Shy Guy that appears outside Mario's house can still be found way underneath the map at different points other then when he's in use for the plot. So why doesn't he just disappear below the earth for that scene end then? Is it because his placement then originates in his later partner acquisition appearance? That's what im curious about.

the likely reason for the whole deconstruction sequence not being shown is the graphical limitations of the n64. the n64 can process about 160,000 polygons a second. id estimate the amount of polygons in the sequence is about 1-2k. at 60 fps this is 60-120000. Adding in Paper Marios very high res textures (for the console) it would definitely push the processors limits.

Maybe you've done it already (I'm binging on your videos thanks to youtube suggestions, subbed, good stuff mate) but can you try Kirby 64? One special thing i'd like to know if there's any difference using freelook in the N64 game or the game in Kirby's Dream Collection. I only ask because Dolphin's freelook makes it look really strange in perspective so I wonder if it's anything to do with that version or if it's just N64 games really not likely freelook.
@FerralVideo5 жыл бұрын
The weird stretching of models is actually an artifact of the N64's rendering engine. The math needed to make textures and models continue to look right at differing angles is computationally expensive for such early hardware. Such, the system will only perform that math for deliberate, programmed-in camera movements. Any 3D N64 game that you perform a camera break on and change the views will experience this distortion, as the system's not performing any compensation for that angle anymore. The original Playstation can only perform these operations at a relatively coarse resolution. This is why polygons seem to jitter and vibrate during camera pan operations. It also can't compensate textures in hardware, causing them to either look weird (when done in software), or WEIRD (when not done at all). In newer games, e.g. PC or Gamecube, that compensation is built into the camera code itself, and is performed no matter what angle you look at the scene from.
