I'm a bourbon guy that has been doing it since the early 2000s. Started with hunting vintage bottles when they were fairly easy to find. I got super heavy into it and my collection peaked around 2015. I took a inventory of my collection, and I had over 200 bottles unopened + 40 opened. Decided It wasn't a good thing for my time and down the road, my health. Sold my entire collection took my family to Hawaii and never looked back. I still enjoy bourbon content and occasional pour. But I am a happier, healthier person walking away from it.

The background (not too subtle of a flex) is why there's a bust. Hunters became hoarders thus supply became artificially wonky. I'm taking couple of years off of buying just to enjoy the tons of bottles I have. You'd be surprised how much money you'll save in one month.

It’s crashing in the U.S., but these huge legacy distilleries that are now part of even huger International Conglomerates aren’t exclusively focusing of the U.S. market. They’re looking outward internationally, and they’re looking long-term. Like Scotch is popular in many, many countries world-wide, that’s what they’re looking to do with the American Spirit. How can you talk about the bourbon market without talking about other continents and countries. One thing I’ve learned is this. Conglomerates don’t invest millions - and even billions - in distillation and aging/storage capacity by only looking at the U.S. market. They’re focused worldwide.
@keithpetersen560

100% agree. It's not often you come across a scotch that is 5 years, but it usually isn't $80.. This is why I've never paid more than Msrp for any allocated whiskey. Plus I've passed on many bottles, just because I didn't think they were worth it.

You are so right about the newer consumers! Got into bourbon a little over a year ago, and once I established a decent collection (spent a ton of money) and got to try a bunch of different shelfers and allocated bottles, I have gotten so much pickier. Same thing happened in 94 with sports cards and comic books. You would pay $15 for a pack of upper deck cards because you might get a frank Thomas rookie card. Comic books were marked up immediately upon hitting shelves and multiple “limited” edition alternate covers. Looking back it a huge warning sign was when my dad started buying comic books, he bought ten and stempy number one and the first ten issues of spawn. He never read a single one. But now I have them so it all worked out lol

It wasn’t Covid . This boom has been slowly growing over the last decade. People cycled have through the bourbon buying journey. The chase of trying to find allocated bottles only to come up empty or pay stupid prices has gone cold. Along with the flood of barrel picks and craft bottles that are over priced and unknown , this too has ran its course . Most people that have been in this game for 5 to 10 plus years have more whiskey than they can ever drink and have realized it’s just not that fun to be in this rat race. At least that where I’m at.

Lived in Nashville for 6 years in the early 2000’s and had no interest and wife traveled to Frankfort, KY all the time for business…I had no idea. She only talked about the horse farms. Now retired, Bourbon collecting is my new hobby. I only overpaid for one bottle and in hindsight, dumb move. I’m much more selective now and I do research before buying. I know my flavor profile too. Oh, I drink my bottles and gift bottles so only a little hoarding 😂. Cheers!

Price increases are tied to supply and demand. If folks are willing to buy at the higher price and the supply is still getting cleared out, most companies will keep increasing prices until the demand drops. Sorry, but this is capitalism. Most companies have investors that are in it for the money, not the passion for the product.
@AdamWebber1
@AdamWebber1 5 күн бұрын
The bet is that there might be way more supply than demand. Lots and lots of inventory on the market, stores don’t want to keep all the excess bottles in the warehouses, and so they dump bottles on the market. If demand stays the same or even slumps do to loss of accessible markets (tariffs) tightening wallets (consumers) then we should see bottle prices drop unless sellers want to warehouse bottles to create a fake scarcity.
@ddwb1
@ddwb1 5 күн бұрын
@@AdamWebber1there are more bottles on the shelf than there are consumers, that’s not new. There is still way more demand than supply for specific distillers and releases (e.g. Stagg). So as demand decreases, I think the price of “unhunted” bottles will go down and the profit margins for their production may become unsustainable. For the hunted bottles, availability may go up modestly, but frankly their pricing (MSRP) is still way on the left side of a supply demand curve.

With Tariffs in place and the stock of many of the companies dropping you will see some brands drop from their list of Whiskey's companies will focus on the brands that sell. How will that affect prices? That's the big question. Personally Availability will get worse. MGP stock 6M ~$90.00 today ~$34.00. From Jack Cramer MSNBC Brown-Forman Corporation (NYSE:BF-B)'s management erred by diverting attention and funds away from Jack Daniel's to other brands. He also believes that high prices are another factor behind the firm's poor performance:

@ Apparently the Liquor Control Board of Ontario is the largest spirits buyer in the world and they’ve announced they’re stopping sales of even current inventory of US products. More allocated bourbon for us hopefully.

@@chrisw.4318Stopping sales of current inventory is either really spiteful... or really stupid. Or both!😂 When the U.S. stops buying their garbage they'll change their mind!

As someone currently in ontario, trust me we are not poaching *anything* allocated here from anyone. Last year literally zero non-shelfer bottles were sold province-wide in the entire year - granted that’s an outlier year but still

I'm a little mad that I heard wild turkey is ending the spirit of Kentucky, which Is the single barrel 101...I really liked the bottle, ans the price point ... what is going to happen to those special barrels? Probably expensive releases that are hard to find 😢 15:12

They're even stopping either the master's keep or the cornerstone . Can't exactly remember which one. But, they are bringing the 8 year 101 out as a regular shelfer, and eventually, they are bringing the unfiltered Rare Breed to the US.

Bruce Russell said on The Mash and Drum that Kentucky spirit will be exported to other countries and Russell’s Single Barrell will be for the US. It has something to do with the taxes those countries pay based off of alcohol percentage. The good thing is even tho we are losing Kentucky spirit we are getting 8 year wild turkey 101

I certainly don't " feel bad " for the distillers getting back to normal production. Are they really "LOSING" money. Meh - allocated/ special releases are only available to the few- so they created this shortage per se, and now they need to pivot before more bourbon people do. Flood the market with good juice at a reasonable price and we will all buy it. Like you said - good distillers doing the right thing will still prosper... No place for bad juice anymore

Sorry but Pursuit United is going to get crushed. When every KZbinr starts praising them when talking about the downturn it means there’s blood in the water. I’m sure they’re just hoping to get some traction going to sell out to a big player and not take a massive loss.
