My god this takes me back to 1982 and many many hours spent on that drill square. I believe I learnt a lot about myself doing drill, though what preciseley I cannot say. Drill is like martial arts in a way, sort of meditative because of it's precision and your state of alertness. Yeah, I hated drill, but also enjoyed it immensely.

The drill is a bit shoddy but they're in 1st term and in B sqn judging by the lapels. One thing is for sure, you could tell the difference when you got to your regiment, between those that went to JLR and those that did Catterick commando's.

Great place in 74, had a Coldstream gds drill SSM and a Scots gds Sgt, he was a mental case lol. Never did cadets so the other guys had to teach me everything from scratch. Let/Capt Illingworth RH, troop leader. Sgt Paul ? QRIH, Paul Boast 2RTR, and a few others, intake was around 110, about 30 passed out. Among them some great blokes too, Penky RH, Dave Black 2RTR, Paddy Daley QRIH, Seb Coe HC, some good times some bad, have a soft spot for Bovington. 60this year and still recall moments like it was just the other day.

I never saw the point of SMG drill. As an infantryman though, I only did rifle drill with SLR and SA80. Interesting to see a Guardsman as the Drill Instructor at the RAC Depot.

Your SMG drill was different than the Canadians, do recall the across chest hold. Present arms is similar, but ours was basically a copy of the drill for the FNC1 (aka SLR)
