How to easily improve the performance of white wood bows with a heat gun. Heat treating the belly (inside) of a bow condenses the wood cells to resist compression forces and increases limb cast or speed.

Nice work. When you’re fire hardening it add bacon grease and it’ll seal up the pours and waterproof it. Plus protects the wood from over cooking. At least that’s what I do and it works very well.

@@SurvivalSchoolHouse I full tiller then back set with fire hardening. Gain pounds plus seal bow up. Nice Carmel color with show through when it’s good. I had them start on fire and still be fine

I’ve found that if you back it with rawhide after you back set it, it will keep most of the reflex.

I heat treat on fire. Works. But they say the color chenge should be half way through the wood.

That’s a very aggressive tiller you got there life of bow might be short . I think a heat gun heats it up to quickly and burns then seals too fast to penetrate the wood .

Very nice, I was wondering if this heat hardening of white woods could be done with a heat gun. I will try it on my Dave Mead style bow & see what happens

None of that so far, a longer fire heat treat would be a little better for deeper penetration and less set

I'm curious to know what kind of white wood is it? Would you recommend doing it to a red oak bow?

Not sure how red oak would do, I don’t think it’s necessary. The bow was hickory and this method really shines with white woods that have more tension than compression strength.
