I got the chance to spend a day with Keith Shannon and Thad Beckum looking at some of Keith's fire hardened white wood selfbows. I took two hickory self bows up there with me to let the guys look them over and walk me through the fire hardening process. We fire hardened a 60" hickory paddle bow and re cooked the 64" flatbow that I made in a previous "bow making for beginners" video a few weeks ago. The flat bow turned out to my best hickory self bow yet. I don't have a chronograph but would be willing to bet it's shooting a 10 grain per pound arrow well at nearly 180 fps. For a primitive bow, that's very very fast!
