As an MFT I love this video. Well done. I pretty much exclusively use Bowen in tandem with CBT and reality therapy when needed. IMO and experience of the criticisms, the only one that at a surface level feels valid is the systemic purists as I do agree that sometimes the Bowen approach can seem to minimize the input from others outside of the primary dyad.

Out of curiosity, is your work ever affected by your support of Blue Lives Matter? Like if say a client who supported Black Lives Matter for example
@SH-kz4fl2 жыл бұрын
@@lilaznballaz1022 no because a good therapist stays self aware and recognizes their own biases. Also, the amount of time I have had a married couple whose chief complaint in their marriage was treatment by the police is zero. Not exactly a pressing issue in most relationships.

What if you don't have parents or family, and were raised in foster care and badly abused; how would this work? For someone like me? Like how can I fix an important family relationship if there is no family, when you said your parents are the most important relationship to fix?? I am just curious how I can fix myself given my different situation?

I think it would be very difficult to separate yourself emotionally from your loved ones in order to become more objective. I feel that as practical as this theory sounds, it defies our innate behaviours, such as caring for our family (i.e. it goes against our primal tribal instincts). How can we empathise when we separate emotionally, for instance? We're humans, not robots. Cutting yourself off from your family can cause immense trauma. An emotional separation can have a powerful negative impact. I see how this can serve as a self-protection strategy, but surely it alters your feelings and level of care towards significant others. Just my opinion.
@ricardodelacrvz14002 жыл бұрын
It depends if the parents were overly abusive. Nobody wants to be abused. But emotional and physical distance from bad parents is the key to self differentiate low conscious individuals. And not everyone was made to be a parent because they themselves have their own traumas that they never took time to resolve.
@blobbybobs1 Жыл бұрын
@@ricardodelacrvz1400 have you stopped to think that perhaps circumstances made it impossible to be able to stop and examine one's feelings? Not top of the agenda when there are mouths to feed and work to be done. What an ignorant remark.
@00st307-m Жыл бұрын
@@blobbybobs1Frankly I wish my parents had been more thoughtful and waited until they were financially secure when they had kids. I was the oldest and dealt the brunt of the trauma. My younger sibling was born when my parents had better jobs, a house, etc and she’s been able to function much better without extensive therapy. If you supposedly care about these kids you speak of - maybe consider the qualify of life you can provide as a parent and not be so selfish! Kids don’t exist to fulfill a parents happiness or existential needs.
@blobbybobs1 Жыл бұрын
@@00st307-m I didn't say that I had children. Just trying to facilitate a more nuanced perspective. Try the Drama of Being A Child by Alice Miller. It's a tough read but some clients swear by it. Ultimately, life can be hard, but unless your sure they were actually trying to cause some sort of harm it's probably best to be as empathetic of others as possible. Take care rm307 😢😢

What kind of support groups are around for people trying to deal with relatives who are bi-polar? What instructions are there?
@rebekahhumphrey13844 жыл бұрын
Reading books on Boundaries, such as "where to draw the line" by Anne Katherine, looking up specific videos that teach you how to set boundaries with people who struggle with mental health issues. Maintaining self-responsibility and having clear bounds around what feelings are your and what feelings are theirs.. boundaries decrease suffering over time and help everyone cope better. Though there is often an initial push back.
