Three saxophonist playing in three different forms. Boney James style is more smooth jazz. Kenny Garrett is more hard bop and funky. And Kirk Whalum is playing more modal than melodic. And all three styles fit. That's one hell of a saxophone summit. Hard to pick a favorite. They all threw it down!!
@phein57937 жыл бұрын
What's more important, they're doing it in sequence: Boney lays down the law, Kenny picks it up, and Kirk breaks it. It's disappointing to read comments to this track that try to make it a competition between the saxes when they are clearly setting each other up.
@terrencehoward13007 жыл бұрын
phein 57 I hear you. I'm a jazz man to the bone. I also love basketball. Top three scorers in NBA history? Kareem. Karl Malone. Kobe Bryant. Three different players. Three different styles of getting the ball thru the hoop. All three worked.
@charltoncalender96986 жыл бұрын
These guys are at the top of their game!! Boney's tone is so smooth and he can bring the fire too. Kenny is the bop hard edge while being funky, Kirk brings fire with the tonal sound. I believe that once you get to a level of technical skills it's about your style and feel after that. I like the smooth fire sound myself but as a sax player myself I just love to hear good guys play, and these are some great players. Pure awesome performance. All of them. Duke, Braun, Carlton, never seen the drummer but he is sick wit it!!! Doesn't get any better!

All of them are top players, but Kenny Garret is freaking scary. One can clear see his real jazz roots and non-predictable phrases and f*** flawless technique and sound.

Kenny isn't scary, he's a funky Coltrane (not to mention he has an album called Pursuance... kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIu0iniPd7qDZ9U). But Kirk is a melodic genius hands down; every note he plays means something. He doesn't use any note flippantly. The other guys... well, they're playing the right scales.

@@BlackThreadDev you clearly have not listened to enough Kenny.

I would have lost my mind if I saw this in person! I saw one of George's last concerts and his last Smooth Jazz cruise and participated in his Q&A. We miss him but we have his music!!

4:37 - 6:53. Can't help but leave this note: If you want to go to Church and come out a different person you probably won't find it in Jazz. However Kenny Garrett transforms this recording in a way that demonstrates just how spiritual as well as a technically gifted musician he is.4:37-10:52 : Amen.

I appreciate ALL of these gentlemen. My father was a huge Jazz enthusiast and I've been exposed to some of the best artist in the game from childhood. But he never made me toon of Billy Kilson (Drummer) I discovered Billy through Chris Botti , who said he found him when preparing for a tour and needed a drummer and went on line and put in "Baddedt Drummer On The Planet" and Billy Kilson's Name came up. Lol. What a compliment right? Billy Kilson seasoned every second if this master piece. Drummers and Bass Players are often what the offensive line is to a football team. The backbone , but very little notiraty

Well said-totally agree with you- my favorite quote "the rhythm section is the engine that drives the bus" and in this performance -well it's obvious. Drums and Bass are driving this bus.Pity there wasn't more visuals of Billy,so much going on, even his working the cymbals and high hat was a joy. 🏋♂👌

The best performance ever! My first DVD from the jazz festival in Montreux. I watched it maybe over 200 times. The whole compilation is amazing, and worth to have it as a private collection item.
