Hey guys, several of you had written to me about issues with your SelectTech's. Specifically, the dials were either jammed (not turning when they should) or turning when the dumbbells were in use (very unsafe).
In this video I explain potential issues with the simple locking mechanism that is responsible for locking and unlocking the rotation of the selector dials. I also offer up a couple tips for working with the ball bearings and springs to make your disassembly and reassembly process a little easier.
By the way, later this summer I hope to create metal replacement components for the locking mechanism to eliminate any future locking/unlocking issues. If they can be manufactured affordably, I'll move ahead with making them and I'll let you know when they're available to purchase.
Cheers,
Average Joe

Joe, I just picked up a set of series 2's last night, put them on a flat cart this morning and covertly got them into my office @ work. During transport, while going up a ramp, one dumbell fell off the cart and the dial wouldn't turn, nor would the dumbell come out of the cradle. Springs, ball bearings and pieces everywhere after I disassembled, I was in trouble. Your videos saved me.... Not only are they as good as new and working properly, but I also know a lot more about how the system works for the future. The grease trick is key...lol. If I ever need some mods, upgrades or replacement parts, I'll be sure to get ahold of you. Thanks again for your very informative and helpful videos.

Hi Rich, for some reason your comment ended up along with a couple of other comments in "blocked words" limbo for apparently no reason. I'm just seeing this now, one month later, and apologize for the delayed reply. So glad you found those tips helpful. And I'm glad you're still able to use the dumbbells. Wishing you and your family a great summer. Cheers.

When the plastic pins shear, or begin refusing to re-engage the metal plate...that's it. The dumbbells would be completely unsafe to use at that point. Though the problem is much more rare than broken discs. The upgrade will be slightly more involved...8 allen screws and a little finesse. But it's doable. Just like with the discs, once you replace these, they'll never need to be replaced again. Stay tuned Bandit!

I have the 552 Series 2 dumb bells, and last night, the one of the red handle covers somehow slipped out of the number dials--right in the middle of my workout. I spent the rest of my workout disassembling a *dumb* bell and fighting two stupid ball bearings (pre-workout shakes weren't helping either lol)! Wish I would have found this video first so I could have finished my workout. Glad I ran across your channel in case I ever have to replace my plastic disks! Thanks.

Hey hey Michael, awesome man! You'll definitely hear more about the mods later this summer. Of course right now most of my effort goes toward making sure the disc kit manufacturing stays on schedule so you all can upgrade your dumbbells asap. I believe this is the first video in which all three of my upgrades--552 S1, 552 S2 and 1090--appear at the same time. I'm hopeful I can manufacture a locking pin and button affordably soon afterward. We shall see. For the plates....I'm looking forward to that challenge. My initial goal is to try to preserve the OEM base, if at all possible. The PRO is that it would keep costs down. The CON is that the existing base will limit my design options for the plates. It'll require some experimentation and prototyping to find the right balance or materials, density, cost, aesthetics, etc. Tons of ideas swirling around upstairs. Stay tuned!

Hey joe, I’ve held off buying discs knowing you would probably produce this part. I have a set of 1090’s, notice this exact issue. Not soon after I noticed on one dumbbell a pin sheared off. Then had the issue of a plate on the same bar falling off periodically when replacing the bar back on the base. I lubed the mechaniinizum which helped but didn’t rectify the issue. I’m prepared to order the 1090, 552 series 2 and pins all at once.

I was using my dumbbells when a screw popped out (one of the four right beside the handle) and wouldn’t tighten when I was trying to screw it back in. Would you say this is an issue in manufacturing? The screw thread seems just fine so I’m thinking it’s the threaded insert on the dumbbell that seems to be the problem. Great video by the way! :)
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi HM, 99.99% chance that a nut fell off from the end of the screw. Technically if your other screw is still on tight you don't *need* both, but it is better to have both installed. I would disassemble the handle down to that cross bar assembly. Then see if the nut is still in there and hasn't already fallen out. If it has, remove another screw and nut....head over to the local mom and pop hardware store and see if you can find a match. Some SelectTechs do have a threaded insert/boss. If that's what you discover when you disassemble the dumbbell, then you can try running a thread tap and/or larger screw. But my first guess is that you lost a nut off the screw. Good luck man.
@zukaadam
@zukaadam Жыл бұрын
Hey so I reassembled one where the ball bearings had come loose. They're securely in there now but the outer-most plates are tight against the dumbbell when you put it in. Both handles on both dumbells are set to 5lb. Regardless of which stack I put it into, the one I fixed binds and its dials won't turn cleanly. If i pull the troubled one out of the base and depress the button it clicks and turns like it's just fine. Not sure what to do.
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Жыл бұрын
Hiya, Adam. Based on your description of the issue, the very first thing I'd look at is the end nuts. Are the end nuts cranked too tightly? Sometimes, just backing off a quarter or half turn can give the plate the breathing room it needs to slide more smoothly, and the dials won't be "clamped" to the point that they are difficult to turn. Don't back the nuts off so much that your dials are now loose such that you can rock them back and forth. That would be a safety issue. But backing off just a smidge isn't an issue. Make sure you add a couple drops of thread lock so the nuts (or bolts if it is Series 1) don't loosen over time. And I would test the handle in two scenarios: first with all of the plates in the base and, second, with only the two smallest outermost plates in the base. That'll help identify if there's an issue with something more than the handle and smallest plates. Hit me up in an email if backing off the nut slightly doesn't work for you: joe@averagejoeinnovations.com Cheers, Joe

Any idea if the locking mechanisim isn't locking the few of the weights properly? One of the 2.5lb plates always semi locks like it's sticky to the locking mechanism but easily falls off. The 7.5lb plate is doing basically same thing. Just the two plates on one side. By the way it is not the tabs. They are fairly new bowflex and the tabs look perfectly fine. I took the dumbbell on 10lb and moved it to the other rack to test it and it's the same issue so its the dumbbell and not the tabs on the weights. I noticed that one side feels a little looser when moving the weights inside the dumbbell. Is there a way to tighten the dumbbell?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Masaki, you can only tighten the handle to a certain point before the dials will no longer turn properly. The goal is to have the handles tight enough to function properly, but not too tight. You can certainly experiment with the tightness to see if there's any improvement. Your description of your problem can mean one of two issues. Weights that should be locked into the handle at a particular weight setting aren't. Or weights that shouldn't be locked into the handle are lifting out briefly, then dropping. Two different issues. Shoot an email over to SelectTech.Fix@gmail.com with a video of your problem in action. I can give you my best guess based solely on what I see in the video. It's not nearly as good as having the dumbbells in my hands, but I can try to point you in the right direction.

Hi Joe! Great video as always! I just got ahold of a pair of 90 lb dumbbells (aftermarket) and can't wait to place an order for the discs, locking pins and handle (once it's ready)! Quick question - on one of the dumbbells when I am turning the dial on one side to adjust for the weight, the dial on the other side turns as well. Would you happen to know if upgrading the locking pins and spring would fix this issue? Thanks in advance!
@LandTorpedo69
@LandTorpedo69 3 жыл бұрын
I got the Chinese knockoff 90lb version . The plate fell off while I was working out so I popped it back in backwards accidentally. I struggled to get it out to the point I started disassembling it. I got the plate off but realized the assembly holding the lock button in place was a tiny screw and nut and it is now impossible to screw it back on because the nut just falls out. So I try to take the whole side apart but got stuck because I don't have a giant ratchet to get the nylon nut off the end, very frustrating. So I either just have to glue it back together or find a giant socket.
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hey LT, definitely try to find someone who will lend you two ratchets and two 19mm or 3/4" sockets. Don't glue that cover back on just in case you ever need to remove it again. If you have a Harbor Freight near you, you can pick up two inexpensive thumbwheel ratchets and two individual sockets for under $20. You didn't lose the nut, did you? Hopefully not. Any other questions hit me up at SelectTech.Fix@gmail.com because I am not always available on YT to answer questions.

I definitely need replacement pins I just bought the select tech from off the Facebook marketplace and didn’t realize that you shouldn’t be able to adjust the weights when your working out. Where can I get the pins from?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Oh man, sorry to hear that, Altwan. You definitely should not be able to turn the dials while the dumbbells are off the base. The first thing I would do is disassemble the dumbbells, inspect all of the parts, and reassemble them. If the parts are in good shape, sometimes a proper reassembly will fix the problem. If the locking pins are old/worn, unfortunately BF doesn't sell replacements. Some people part out their SelectTechs and sell pins/springs/discs/etc on eBay when they think the dumbbells are broken beyond repair or they don't want to spend any $ to fix them. Most of those dumbbells are fixable. I happen to make the only metal (6061 Aluminum) locking pins available anywhere currently. 552 Series 2 and 1090 will often fit with no modification. 552 Series 1 usually require some tweaking on a case-by-case basis. Each dumbbell can be different, even in the same pair. You can shoot an email to SelectTech.Fix@gmail.com for more information. I think I'll film a SelectTech buyer's guide shortly to help people understand what to look for when buying these dumbbells used. Strangely, I hadn't considered that until after reading your comment....thank you!

Hi again, Christopher. I just replied to your original comment before seeing this followup. I am not surprised that you found one or more broken discs given what you had previously described. Assuming only the discs are broken, your options boil down to 5: scrap the dumbbells, or buy replacement handles; or replace the discs on your current handles with more of the same OEM plastic discs, or with 3D printed plastic discs, or with either my aluminum or stainless steel discs (www.averagejoeinnovations.com). I know it stinks and they should have been designed to be more durable from the get-go. I can tell you that I was in the same boat years ago along with thousands of others who watch my videos. I wish I had better news for you. If you have more questions, just shoot me an email. Cheers, Joe

Hi, Israel. Sorry about the delayed reply. I've been overseas for 5 weeks with limited internet access, and I'm back now playing catch up with orders and answering questions. Unfortunately, Bowflex doesn't offer replacement OEM pins. It's one of the reasons why I had to make my own a couple years back. Some of mine were worn/broken and I had no other way to replace them. I sell replacement locking pins in both cast aluminum and CNC machined 6061 aluminum. The latter is made in the U.S. right down the road from me. Here's a load test comparison of both styles versus OEM with the test results shown down in the description below the video as well: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHmVn52nqtqIpbMsi=QC0hlIrGA5UCeZjZ Any questions, just give me a shout. But please note that it may take me a few days to reply since I'm up to my eyeballs working my way through a backlog of orders and inquiries. Cheers.

@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nashwan, I'm just getting around to my KZbin comments tonight. The very first thing I would check is the weight plate that is being picked up when it shouldn't be. Anything at all wrong with the tabs or plastic covering on the plate that might cause the plate to get stuck in between the discs. If it isn't that, then check the discs on either side of the plate for any warping or cracking that, again, might cause the plate to get stuck when it shouldn't. And lastly, if you have previously disassembled that handle, make sure you didn't retighten the nuts too much. On older sets especially, and on sets with slightly warped discs, over-tightening can cause weights to be picked up when they shouldn't be. Any other questions, shoot me an email at SelectTech.Fix@gmail.com.

Hi, Jesse. Does your dial turn without stopping both in and out of the base? I recommend checking out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ini7hqutbbqCjKMsi=4LG_ozCfzsnjK8D3&t=229 In the link above, I skipped ahead in the video to where I test the locking pin to see if it works properly. But if you watch the rest of the video, I also talk about other factors that can affect the way the dials turn. Loose/missing springs or bearings *can* cause issues. Cheers.

I had an issue where my weights got stuck at 50lbs, so I used the button on the bottom to release them. Worked on one side, but the other side only released one of the plates and not the other three. And now the dial is turning even when the button isn't being pressed, but it still isn't releasing the plates. Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 2 жыл бұрын
Hi again Natalie, it almost sounds like the dial lugs are broken on that side of your dumbbell. Meaning that the dial is no longer physically connected to the discs that hold and release your weights. So you'd be able to turn the dial even when the button isn't pressed, and your plates would not be released by turning the dial. To see what I mean, take a look at this video about the problem and one way to repair it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIaYYpSBn82psLc Now, if this isn't your issue, there are other things we can check. But I'd recommend starting there first. Let me know how it goes.

Hello, I used ill-advised 3d part before finding you and replaced it but have since switched back because I've never been able to get the long rod to the 'right' tightness. It's either too tight and won't move or even be inserted or hold weights or all of the above! I've taken it apart, several times and thoroughly cleaned it in desperation to no avail. I've rebuilt an engine and somehow cannot do this. Will your metal disc's solve this without getting the metal dials too? Or do you have any other suggestions? Thank you!

Hiya Rob, first I need to make sure I understand you correctly. So you purchased a 3D printed replacement disc and no matter what you tried, you couldn't get the handle to work properly after you installed it. So you reverted back to the original parts for now. Do I have that right? How long ago did you buy the part (just in case it needs to be returned)? If so, you may simply have the wrong part for your dumbbell or it could be an issue with the printed part. Shoot me a few photos of your dumbbell handle empty, and both sides of the 3D printed disc. My email is joe@averagejoeinnovations.com. Let's first see if we can't figure out what's going on with your part since you already paid someone for that. I may not reply right away if I'm busy, but I will reply. I just had a customer maybe a week ago show me a 1090 disc purchased online that was 2mm taller than the disc she was replacing. It happens man. The OEM/knockoff/printed parts for these things are not all created equal. Cheers, Joe
@YouGotServed835
@YouGotServed835 Жыл бұрын
@@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Wow thanks for your quick response! Yeah just reverted back to OEM parts to troubleshoot and it's still the same. The problem with the broken one was just a tab so it had no effect on the current problem either. And as with car parts Ive always compared and checked the new parts before installation especially if aftermarket. My theory is that there is a descepency in length some where in the plastic causing the problem in length which is why I cleaned and checked it. Also why my thought process leaned toward the nonforgiving metal parts. Also maybe the metal dials but didn't see them for sale. This feels like it shouldn't be this difficult either so maybe I'm missing something obvious?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Жыл бұрын
@@YouGotServed835 Thanks for the clarification, Rob. Based on what you just explained, the first thing I'd do is double check that all of the weight plates in the base are in the correct order and facing the correct direction (tabs facing outward). Crazy, I know, but it's a simple thing to rule out.. If even one plate is facing the wrong way it'll cause problems with inserting the handle into the base. If that checks out, then there's definitely an issue somewhere in the assembly. Especially if these are now all the original parts and it was working fine previously. Could be one or more dials/discs not fully seated into and aligned with adjacent parts. Could be a missing washer. These types of issues will cause misalignment of parts and difficulty inserting the handle into the weights and/or turning the dials to select weights. Here are some assembly and troubleshooting videos that may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXbWmnaQhc6Ue68 (reassembly) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6fTo4igfrB2qcU (troubleshooting) kzbin.info/www/bejne/ini7hqutbbqCjKM (troubleshooting) Some of this may be a repeat of things you've already tried. Mechanically, you and I know these things are light years more simple than an engine rebuild. Oftentimes the issue may be staring us right in the face. Hopefully one of those videos will help find the issue through process of elimination. Let me know how it goes.

@@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Washers are there. The problem has been isolated to the 1 handle itself because it was tried on the other one I have as well the other handle to weights and vice versa. Sorry I should've told you that earlier. Thank you taking the time to respond, I will check the videos you referenced and probably buy the metal discs either way but are the dials for sale ?

My weight is stuck in the cradle. Whats the easiest way to unjam it or disassemble to get it out the cradle?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan, thanks for your patience as I work my way through replying to everyone. If your handle is stuck in the cradle, make sure to check the easiest problem first. Make sure both ends of the dial are set to actual weight settings. If either dial is turned slightly such that it is in between two weight settings, your will not be able to life your handle from the base. If your dials are set to a specific weight and you still cannot remove your handle, remove the two end bolts/nuts (usually 19mm) and slide the dumbbell shaft completely out from one end. Then carefully remove each of the remaining parts from the base. Pay close attention....there are 4 ball bearings and 4 springs that will likely fall out as you remove the parts from the base. Now reassemble the handle. I have videos that show reassembly. At some point I may create a video about this particular issue. At least a half dozen other people have asked the same question in the past...so you're not alone.

My weights are working except for one issue. 52.5 doesn't function correctly. When I select 52.5, the two smallest weights on both sides come with the barbell, but not the rest. After this, the only way to fix the weight is to press the buttons to rotate the dial to 5, and then once the weights are off, I can put them back on the rack and the barbell functions properly again. Again, all weights are working except for 52.5. Do you have any suggestions? I think I have the series 2 (in ProFit brand). Thank you!

Hi, Christopher. Oftentimes, if plates are not picked up by the handle at weight settings which should pick them up, either the discs (that retain the plates) or the tabs on the weight plates, or both are damaged or broken in some way such that they're no longer doing their respective jobs. So the first goal is to carefully inspect the components of each dumbbell to identify precisely which ones have failed. I prefer to disassemble the handles to accomplish that because it's easier to get a good look at each of the components. If you search my channel for my installation video playlist, you'll find videos that will walk you through disassembly and reassembly. If any questions come up along the way, shoot me an email and i will reply as soon as my schedule permits. Cheers, Joe

Hiya Robbi. Apologies for the delay replying to you. Although I also own the 560, I don't currently have plans to develop a fix for it. It's a much more tedious and involved disassembly that is likely beyond what the average customer is willing to tackle. Many more little parts, and a lot more time.

I have 1090s and the dial on one side spins freely but doesn’t appear to engage the weights/change weights at all. How do I fix this?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC Жыл бұрын
Hi, Phil. Each of the components on our 1090 handles are engaged (locked into) adjacent components with three little lugs. When those lugs wear/shear off, the components are no longer locked in sync and one or more can spin freely. Remove the weight plates from one side of a base. Place your empty dumbbell handle on the base, fully seated, such that the handle half with the free-spinning dial is on the side with no plates. Now turn your dial and observe the black disc adjacent to it (Disc #2). Does the dial rotate, but not the disc? If so, either the dial lugs have sheared off (in which cast the dial needs to be repaired like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIaYYpSBn82psLc or replaced), or the handle assembly is slightly loose--just enough to allow the dial to disengage from Disc #2--in which case, the handle needs to be properly re-tightened. If the dial and disc 2 rotate together, then turn your attention to discs 3, 4 and 5. They should all rotate together as a single unit. If anywhere in there, some rotate and the rest remain still, that's where the lugs have sheared off in between them. Since this is only occurring on one side of your handle, I doubt the handle assembly is loose. I'm willing to bet that the dial lugs (or one of the adjacent disc's lugs) have sheared off. Hope this helps. Cheers, Joe

@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Charles, I know I answered this in an email for you. I'm leaving an answer here as well for visitors checking out the video. There are two types of springs in a SelectTech dumbbell. One for the locking pins. And another type underneath the ball bearings in the crossbar assembly. eBay is your only real option. Sellers that part out dumbbells. The alternative is to hunt down springs with the exact dimensions and spring rates...that's a pain and more trouble than it's worth.

Hi my dial just spins, could this be related?
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 10 ай бұрын
Hi, Jason. It depends. If one of your dials spins but the adjacent discs don't spin together with it when the empty handle is out of its base, then the dial's lugs may have sheared off. If that's the case, you can either fix it as I demonstrate here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rIaYYpSBn82psLc or buy an OEM replacement, or upgrade to my custom dials. If the dial spins together with one or more discs, but some of the discs on the same side don't turn with it when the empty handle is out of the base. then one of the disc's lugs may have sheared off and you'll need to replace it. Your options are to buy a used OEM disc on eBay, or a 3d printed disc which I wouldn't recommend, or one of my aluminum replacement discs. If the dial and all 4 discs and the inner steel plate (the one with all of the little holes in it) turn together as a unit when the handle is out of the base, then your locking pin may be worn or it may have sheared off, and you'll need to replace it. I sell aluminum Locking Pin Kits. Any other questions, shoot me an email. Cheers.

@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC
@AverageJoeInnovationsLLC 10 ай бұрын
@@jasonmcbride1703 it seems so. It's super simple to confirm. Pull the empty handle from its base, and try turning the dial. As you do that, watch the black disc that the dial is attached to. If the dial spins and the disc doesn't, your dial lugs have sheared off. And you can use the technique from that video to fix them unless the damage to the dial is more extensive. Cheers.
