Thanks for the video. 5 to 8 % FOC is like shooting deer with target arrows. Everybody has a different hunting environment. Where I am it is all about ambush in a 🌳. The factor of this is that I'm in the far north where deer grow bigger bodies. A mature doe can & will gross a dressed weight over 150 in November & the bucks r much larger. I do alot of testing with different weights & FOC. Because of the conditions & terrain a 30 yard shot is a long shot. I try to cut that distance in half by setting up in places where in all likelihood the average shot is 15 yards. If u scout in March it is easier to achieve this. I'm having good results between the 17-20% FOC %. Remember this, if u shoot an arrow with high FOC your accuracy will make up for your speed 10 fold & if u hit a twig feet b4 an animal with a fixed high quality broadhead it will make little to no difference @ all.
@sandramoskwa2 жыл бұрын
I believe the FOC should be measured with the point or broadhead attached. To my way of thinking , you don’t shoot a arrow without some sort of point installed so without that point installed you don’t have a meaningful measurement. I can be wrong but that is the way I try to balance my arrows.
@arrowem Жыл бұрын
I agree, that is effectively the total length of the arrow.

Great video. Question for ya. Why don’t you have your broad-head on when getting the center of gravity on the arrow?
@A_Dad_Playing_Games22 күн бұрын
His field point is likely the same grain as the broad head that he would be hunting with therefore it wouldn’t make a difference. I’m new to bow hunting so I could be wrong
@huntercroak55518 күн бұрын
@@A_Dad_Playing_Games you are wrong, it's not about weight with this measurement but about length.
@lspostma4 жыл бұрын
Why would you omit the point? that will inherently change the FOC when you change from a 1/2" field point to a broadhead that may be a full 1" shifting as much as a % or 2% on some setups?

I wanted to ask you. I am looking to move up to 70-75 lb draw weight. I am using 340 spine arrows and cutting them to 27.5 length. They are axis 5mm arrows, on the shaft chart that puts me right in the middle of a 340 or a 300 spine arrow. I don’t want to move up to 300 spine because I don’t want to have to add a lot of grains to my arrow to keep my same 12-13% FOC. Will I be ok at 340 spine?
@bowhuntordie3 жыл бұрын
You should be okay. I've run a very similar setup - Axis 5 mm 340 spine w/75 grain brass HIT inserts, arrow length of 28.5", at 70-72 lbs without any issues. With your shorter arrow length that will stiffen the shaft up a bit to help compensate for those extra pounds of draw weight.
@sscconnections93223 жыл бұрын
I have a short draw length i want to shoot a 438 grain arrow but to get it there with my arrow I need to use a 150 grain broad head and that gives me to much FOC over 22 percent so i was thinking to go to a 125 grain broad head and take the 25 grains and add it to the back of arrow maybe with a wrap and lighted nocks and that would bring my FOCdown i hope to around 17 percent would that work
@bowhuntordie3 жыл бұрын
Arrow wraps and lighted nocks are pretty standard accessories these days so you shouldn't have any issues with that type of setup. Remember you can always use brass inserts or weights on the front of your arrow instead of going to a heavier broadhead. There are a lot fewer heads to pick from in 125 and 150 grain weights. Sticking with 100 grains gives you a lot more options, and there are still good ways to increase the weight on the front of your arrow.

Need some advice. I want to build arrows for turkey hunting. I have 5mm fmj’s (10.2 gpi) cut to 26 inches. I wanted to buy a 125 point tip and a 75 grain insert to slow it down. Is this over doing it? Appreciate any help for a newbie.
@bowhuntordie4 жыл бұрын
That's definitely more than enough weight for turkey hunting. You would even be fine using the regular aluminum inserts that come with those arrows, and a 100-grain broadhead. If these arrows are specifically for turkeys, and you won't need them for deer, there's no need to overdo it with a heavier arrow. You might even be better off with a lighter, faster arrow for turkeys.

8% FOC for a hunting arrow is way too lite. Most target arrows are a minimum of 10%. Hunting arrows FOC needs to be minimum of 18% IMO. Known distance dot or 3-d archers can and do use high FOC arrows which can help in windy conditions especially. Heavier total weight arrows with a higher FOC tend to fly with more stability IMO. And usually penetrate flesh easier resulting in a pass through or deeper travel in the flesh. Heavier arrows with a good/great quality broadhead and good FOC have a higher probability of breaking some bones. IMO- perfect arrow flight at a slower speed ( 250-270?) is more relevant than a fast lightweight arrow. Because we have seen many videos of deer dropping out of the arrow flight path with arrows going 300 fps even at 25-30 yards. Good Luck everyone!!!

F.o.c is the full mass of the arrow if you do not include the full nock that is not a true f.o.c . So 1 grain at the rear could mean 5 grains up front .
