'Bows Unveil New Pregame Ha'a

After years of performing the Maori wardance known as the haka, Hawaii head coach Nick Rolovich and the Rainbow Warriors spent the summer learning something new... The team unveiled its new Hawaiian ha'a against Tennessee Martin on Saturday.

This is amazing. I am a Maori and was always confused as to why Hawaiians did the haka knowing that they had their own beautiful culture. The ha'a is so special and deserves to be spread around the world. This makes me so proud to see. I keep seeing football teams doing the Haka with Maori words and it is slightly disconcerting. Please spread your message and share your beautiful language and dance with the rest of the world.

Miss Tuwharetoa yeah, I wish that too. Sadly USA occupation plays a big part in that. They try to suppress our culture. At one time it was illegal to even speak hawaiian in schools. I see high school football teams do the haka in Utah and it pisses me off because it's not in their culture. I learned that the haka is a Maori tradition, so it vexes me when I see them do it instead of doing the sipi Tau. I feel like they do it for intimidation purposes and because the haka is more popular than the sipi Tau and the ha'a.

Growing up as a local Japanese person in Hawaii, we still respect the culture, so I too am proud to see my alma mater decide to scrap the Haka for an original Ha'a. When I see people on the mainland doing the Haka, it irritates me. When UH used to do the Haka, I felt a bit embarrassed for UH. It was as if the All-blacks decided to do the Sipi Tau or the Siva Tau at the beginning of their games.

It’s sad that the Hawaiians biggest criticism come from our own blood, the Maoris. The Maori haka is popularly compared to the Hawaiian ha’a. Historically, we both come from the same wa’a (canoe). Just dropped off in different places. Our dna is the same. Hawaii being a part of America gets more recognition. Because of that we acknowledge and practice ALL Polynesian cultures in hopes for the same recognition. But when Hawaiians or anything of Hawaii tries to appropriately do so, we get put down..

Julius Toledo all the dances are called "haka". The Ha'a is particular to Hawa'ii. In Tonga they call it the Sipi Tau, in Fiji the Siva Tau and so on
