Exactly. Let's be honest, this long excuse to avoid being called racist. Because it would have been easier to apologize and and explain if she bombed lots of people/randoms who came out around the same time as her book.

Wow, I've never heard an apology that was so completely focused on the person in the wrong. Also, as a white woman with a mental illness, can confirm that when in the midst of severe depression and basically unable to function, I've never suddenly felt the urge to systematically attack POC. My meds have a lot of side effects, but racism isn't one of them

Ok so I'm autistic, recently diagnosed with ADHD, terrified of "doing bad things and not realizing" AND of checking scary internet places where people might be angry at me (CPTSD and having been digitally abused). The first thing you do if you actually cared in the most remote way about others is get someone safe to come sit with you, find out what you may have done, help you remedy it, take your login away, and then call your doctor to tell them this medicine gave you a very severe side effect - which would never get you institutionalized because the symptom (if it were real) is not there as long as you don't take this medication. The pile of lies is absurd

As someone who has CPTSD and suffered from pretty bad dissociative episodes... I 100% always talked with my therapist when I had a scary incident or contacted individuals I shouldn't have during an episode (those related to my trauma) because it terrified me when it happened and I wanted to fix it as soon as possible. I just feel like her apology was an excuse. Even if there is validity to her "mental illness and meds or sobriety being an issue".... Just apologize and don't make excuses. And, I don't want to downplay what mental illness can do to someone... But the apology didn't seem sincere and it honestly just rubbed me the wrong way.

YEEEEESSSSS! As an ADHDer who might be ASD. None of Caits excuses make any sense. Like when I hurt people it is usally an accident or a misunderstanding. Like oops I didn't realize what I said could be taken as mean, or oops I lost track of time/the executive isn't funtioning and I haven't responded to texts for a week. Not, I HAVE DONE AN INTIONTIONAL BEHAVIOUR OVER THE SPAN OF MONTHS THAT EVEN A TODDLER WOULD TELL ME IS MEAN, JUST TO SOOTH MY OWN EGO. Cait needs to get over themselves

I'm autistic with severe ADHD. I don't think it's appropriate to ever frame things as how you do something "if they actually cared." The way you handle a situation and the way I handle a situation can be completely different, and it wouldn't mean I cared any less than you did. I know we tend to look at the world outward from our own perspective, I find it hard to try to imagine the world from other people's perspectives, but I have learned based on how often people do things completely different from myself, that the way I do thing while it may be the right way for myself, it isn't necessarily gong to be right for you. It wouldn't make you any less or any more, it would just make you an individual. While our experiences do inform our opinions and our beliefs, it's always best to consider that our experiences don't account for everyone's experience. I care about others. I also suffer side effects from medication. If a medicine has a bad side effect, I'm prone to it. Effexor XR made me feel like I was having a bad trip on mushrooms and dying for multiple hours. I care about people and myself. I didn't have someone sit with me, I just buried my head under a pillow and waited for the horrible feeling and visions and nausea to go away. I only say all of that, because, well... Medications can make you do things that you wouldn't typically do, but they won't change who you are or provoke you to do something severely out of character. They may emphasize a bad characteristic, like kleptomaniacs and Xanax. However, this lady is just a bad person. Medications are JUST an excuse for her. While I have seen some medications turn people into monsters. Never seen it turn them into fake book reviewers. Every time I switch medications, I become a menace for everyone and end up losing friendships. Usually, because I never shut up and end up saying something wrong because my filter is broken. But most autistic people know how that is. I'm just saying I can see a world where medication could have played a role in her decision, but the medications don't change who we are. So if you do bad things on medication, the medication isn't what makes you bad, you are bad before you take the medication. The medication just removes your fear of letting that side out. Which still isn't an excuse. -a man with a regret or two.

As a fellow white woman who only discovered her autistim in 2022, I have a lot of thoughts on Cait's actions in that regard specifically. I'll try to be brief. TW: ableism, autistic masking, violence towards mentally ill folks My autism has absolutely caused me to hurt people's feelings because of misunderstood tone or sarcasm, particularly before I was aware it was there. I am still responsible for any harm I caused, regardless of intent. My autism has absolutely NOT caused me to strategically review bomb People of Colour, or any marginalized community for that matter, in order to get ahead. The level of deception she attempted to pull off required was not a one time, regrettable impulsive act like she's trying to paint it as. (Even if it was, she's still be fully responsible, and it would still be racist) She's weaponizing the combination of autistic infantilization and the infantilization and coddling of white women. (Also worth noting the fact that autistic infantilization can have a very different impact depending on an autistic person's level of support needs and palatability to neurotypicals, particularly if they are POC males. "Innocent" can swing to "unable to control themselves, disruptive, or dangerous" very quickly. While infantilization harms all autistic folks, some of us still hold privilege over others. This also encourages masking for autistic folks, especially autistic women, which is a whole other soupy mess of simultanously providing privilege while causing harm that i frankly don't have the energy to go into). By blaming autism and mental illness and addiction for her violent actions, and claiming they cause them to act "against her will" Cait is effectively stripping the agency away from people in those already highly marginalized communities and adding to the fear that they are dangerous, which in turn can them in danger. Cait is perpetuating all of this. Now, on top of being violently racist to fellow authors, she's also being ableist and harming people within her own community, who she claims she hopes to be a voice for? Fuck that. Sorry if this was far too long, I hope I made some semblance of sense. I'm open to critique

I also have an autistic brother and you're absolutely right, our brothers would not be here long if they harassed white women (not that they would anyway). There'd be no infantilizing or coddling of them. They'd be seen and labeled as "dangerous," there's no blaming it on their neurodivergence and getting a slap on the wrist. "Racism is often negligence." 1000% say it louder for those in the back. So many people today think they can't be racist cause they're looking at it through the lens of slavery or segregation/Jim Crow, and they want to distance themselves from being seen as those "types of racists," but those are not the only ways racism shows up. In today's world, it's not going to be overt/obvious, it's going to present in very subtle and negligent ways. Until people start to realize this, our society will never be able to truly unlearn racism. Also, I had a short story idea that I started brainstorming/outlining a while ago (but haven't gone any further with it yet) that's supposed to be a modern day retelling of Robin (Robyn-how I spell it) Hood where she uses new advanced tech to steal from big corporations and give to those in her community in need. I swear sometimes I watch y'alls video and think, "are we twins? We're so much alike, but still different. We had to be twins in another timeline/universe." 🤣🤣🤣 Can't wait to read y'all story. 😁

“Minding my Black owned businesses” Y’alllll🤣 My mom’s classroom of pre-k kids can apologize better than Cait 🤡🤡 I’m so glad y’all are covering this hot mess, absolutely love how insightful y’all are! Thank y’all for being so vulnerable and open. Seriously , could mental health have played a part in what Cait did (behaving in erratic ways, lashing out, etc)? Sure, but it’s not isolated to just mental health and autism, because those two things do not make you a racist. So for them to act as though it is, is highly offense. Not only to the intelligence of the people she’s lying to, but to the communities they’re using as excuses. I can’t get over Cait claiming that they told their doctor what medications she needed and the doctors were like “yeah sure here ya go.” THATS NOT HOW IT WORKS! Cait is desperately trying to save their career instead of taking the very EASY steps of apologizing and showing growth and change. The steps that anyone who wasn’t racist would be taking in order to fix the harm that was done.

Me with adhd and not being racist: 👁👄👁 Also I’ll give some credit about medicine. When my dosage of medication went up I started experiencing sensory hallucinations. Felt like bug where having a party on my skin. So I do believe, to a degree, that it’s possible that certain meds can cause hallucinations. However, still doesn’t excuse racism. Even if she was tripping on lsd, that racism had to come from the inside not the drug. Like one time I was in a paranoid delusion and convinced that my brother was trying to kill me, and yet for some reason I didn’t believe that all POC was evil and against me. I wonder why🤨

Especially as a writer, one should know subject vs. object. An apology needs to have ‘I’ as the subject, doing the apology!! Like ‘I am sorry for causing harm.’ Saying ‘sorry you felt harmed’ suddenly turns ‘you’ into the active role like ‘you’ is responsible for the harm !! 😒 not okay. This whole situation is abhorrent. I can't trust her bullshit about not intentionally targeting bipoc authors. We all know bipoc authors are never really a part of those Goodreads lists, and if they are they're barely in the top 20, unless the lists are specifically for bipoc authors. Even then half the time they still have white authors writing black characters on those lists. I don't get how she expects anyone to think she magically didn't target white authors to the same degree when they were her actual competition. They were the ones making equal money to her and getting the same deals and shit.

It's the Richard Nixon playbook - "I'm not a crook!" He was a crook. "I'm not a racist!" Uh, yeah, Cait you are. Simple math shows that if she was doing this at random, the white to POC ratio would have been at least 60/40 (probably more like 80/20 tbh) with the majority of them white authors because the publishing industry is weighted that direction. Like, the complex steps associated with everything she did (omg, the fake Discord messages or whatever that she constructed when this first leaked to try and throw suspicion on some rando who didn't exist) is just...so much work! And then to go on another no-pology tour and just....be disgusting. How she hasn't hit magma with how deep her trench is at this point is beyond me. She just keeps digging.

Uuuugh. We get so defensive abt racism 'accusations', when in reality the people calling us out are giving us a gift, if you're just willing to hear them out and process what they're saying, without immediately going into a self worth spiral. people giving you insight into how ur behavior affects them is VALUBLE, (even if it makes you feel bad).

I remember this time a former KZbinr was accused of grooming (as in actual grooming) and a lot of other KZbinrs came out to criticise him for it. Then Edwin's Generation I think he's called did a video to defend the groomer, saying he was sorry and he was in a bad place, then used that video to attack one of the other KZbinrs, Emma Blackery, who called him out for grooming. So it went from KZbinr abuses his power to groom young girls to another larger KZbinr using his platform to defend the groomer and attack a woman for calling him out in the first place. It was utterly absurd I couldn't believe what I was watching. I don't understand why there are always so many people who line up to defend bad people and then turn it into an attack line against those who call out the abusers.

"I don't understand why there are always so many people who line up to defend bad people and then turn it into an attack line against those who call out the abusers." It's cause they identify with the abusers not the abused.
@lloroshastar6347
@lloroshastar6347 7 ай бұрын
@@VanessaMarieBooks It was also frightening seeing women in the comments backing up the narrative pushed by the video, with hundreds of likes. There are also a large number of comments defending the woman who called out the abuser. But still, the argument against her seems to be "she was too mean", but all she did was call him out for grooming underage fans. The strange thing is, Edwin's Generation does other videos on abusers and calls them out, like Die Antwoord for example, so it makes him even more strange for defending the abuser in this case. I thought perhaps he was trying to push the narrative of a redemption arc, but he also describes the abuser as his 'friend', so perhaps it's as simple as that. Either way he clearly isn't practicing what he's preached before. Personally I don't want to live in a world where some abusers are allowed to get away with what they do, usually it's because they are rich or powerful, in this case it seems it's because the aforementioned Edwin is friend's with the abuser, but as you say perhaps he also identifies with them too. Often enough abusers will project onto other's.
@VanessaMarieBooks
@VanessaMarieBooks 7 ай бұрын
@@lloroshastar6347 If Edwin said the abuser is his "friend" then it makes complete sense why he defended him even if it makes him look like a hypocrite. It still sucks and I think we can still hold "friends" accountable, but some people are just "ride or die" for their friends even if it means excusing bad behaviors. As for the "she's too mean" comment, women get that all the time when we're just being honest or assertive or standing up for what's right. That's why women bosses are more likely to be viewed as "mean bitches" than men. When men do the same thing, it's seen as assertive or something to be applauded/praised. And as for not wanting "to live in a world where some abusers are allowed to get away with what they do, usually it's because they are rich or powerful," unfortunately, that's the current world we live in. Many abusers, especially the rich/powerful, will never face any consequences for their actions. 😔

It's been a month and I still feel so angry over this!! Having mental illness, neurodivergence, and an upbringing by emotionally immature parents, I can understand the insecurity and fixation on stuff, but none of that causes racism! Before I began the process of diagnosis and inner work, I'd lose control of my temper and it was only brief outbursts of yelling or saying selfish shit. I can't even imagine that heat-of-the-moment loss of control allowing for all the work of making puppet accounts and systematically trying to sabotage people. I can't speak to that particular cocktail of substances she claims to have mixed, but I don't see it leaving anyone in the state of mind to go through so much work; it sounds like too much work sober lmao. If she'd put all that effort into further promoting her own book or improving her craft, it would've gone so much better for her. All of this self-serving stuff since getting caught is so offensive to the people she targeted, other disabled & neurodivergent people, and even Matthew Perry 🙄🙄 Anyway, there's PARKOUR in y'all's heist book?? I know y'all will let us know when we can preorder! 😻

It used to be we could retort to racist comments by asking " Have you taken your meds today?" Now it would seem that the meds are the problems, shouldn't the pharmaceutical companies list "racist actions" under the possible side effects? And if it isn't the drugs to blame, shouldn't said pharmaceutical companies be suing Ms Corrain for such defamatory statements?

I have ADHD and I am off the medication because I found a way to manage on my own but when I was on the medication it made me more focused and more aware (mine is severe ADHD and my awareness at times is not great, especially when I am excessively day dreaming). Not only that, it made me calm. To me, it felt like time slowed down. My thoughts weren't all over the place and all at once demanding my focus distracting me in different direction every second but instead I was able to focus on a thought at a time and push the others aside. So I am trying very hard to understand how this girl is claiming ADHD medication got her to do what she did...The medication either works or doesn't work - if it doesn't, nothing changes, and if it works it improves your neurological functioning and even improves your mental health, it did mine because ADHD can cause depression and other mental health issues like other learning difficulties can. The medication has side effects but none list acting out of character as being one other than becoming super withdrawn or quiet if the dosage is too high than what you may require. The methods these types of people conjure up to escape responsibility...Like, if it's that scary to take accountability for your actions how about then not committing those actions.

like, i get side effects. i understand and relate. i had a breakdown because i thought my friend was mad at me and ghosting me when i took adderall. it made me so anxious and self loathing. but i can't help but think everything they did was deeply seeded in racism and white victimization. like... the idea that my friends hate me is deeply seeded, so of course that would be enhanced by the adderall. but knowing that they had this elaborate plan to do all of this they clearly had a lot of jealousy issues already pre medication.
