You might want to look into Yoga for this. They are among the few experts when it comes to breating for various results. Their discipline goes back for thousands of years. Of course they are not the only group focusing on breathing [even in Hawaii back in the older times the breathing techniques were used for praying, healing and other benefits]. This technique it's called "square breathing" and it's only one of the vast so called pranayama techniques used in Yoga. There are many others each of them giving you different results. Most likely the Navy Seals [their experts ] took it from Yoga because even the name was not changed from the original. And this technique can do a lot more then just calming you down. Btw, "pranayama" also has a complex meaning which I won't get into details here but it means much more then just breathing techniques. Just my two cents here.

I have never in my life heard that this was some magic Navy Seal thing even though I grew up around the military and know SF & SEAL veterans. Now yoga, massage therapy and other therapy circles on the other-hand, I have heard of all kinds of breathing techniques.

Never in my life have I ever heard of box breathing in correlation with SEALs. I am pretty sure they have more high speed “secret” weapons than breathing.
