Remember that Suicide Squad was an international cast film, it had Japanese, Latino, Black and White stars who were all very advertised but Wonder Woman was advertised with just its Lead who happens to be traditionally white character

Harry Nelson but I think that would only affect the asian market, because as a Latino, I've never seen people disappointed that there isnt a latino character in a movie, we're kind of used to it, so I DOUBT that if WW had a latino character it would've done better in the latinamerican market

Yes, and that cast was again horribly and stereotypically protrayed. WW was the exact opposite.

Rob's Gaming Channel that is wrong. the fast and furious franchise does amazing internationally because of its inclusive cast. no matter what it does in the US, it will always do a billion world wide. Latin America and South America is slept on as far as the box office goes.

James Biggins it depends on the market, I think the inclusive cast helps a lot with the african-american and asian markets, and maybe even with latinos living in the us, but I'm fairly sure that the movies would still be a hit in latinamerica even if there were no latinamerican characters, and yes, I'm aware that latinamerica aint a big market, with Mexico being tje most important latinamerica country when it comes to BO

I agree with you. Wonder Woman had no lead cast of colour didn't appeal the to international audiences like suicide squad. Disney have leaned diversity sells which is why all their franchises from Star Wars, Marvel and the fairytales all have diversity and all make billions internationally. Wonder Woman was just too white to be a global success

Harley vs. Diana would be cruel to Harley. Now, if you want to have them forced into fighting on the same side for a second, since Harley is more anti-hero these days anyway, that might work... I just don't really see how Diana gets involved in a (supposed) heist film taking place in Gotham City. I love that Wonder Woman is such a smash hit and I have NO problem with the female member of the Trinity being the face of the DCEU, but, they don't need to go all Tony Stark with her and shoehorn her into every DCEU movie just because her movie was a smash... as much as I would love to see Gal Gadot in every movie from every studio from now on.
@bbbnnnlll
@bbbnnnlll 7 жыл бұрын
They certainly don't need to fight each other (as others have said, it would be over in seconds anyway), although a quick Wonder Woman cameo in Gotham City Sirens could still work. In the comics, Harley admires (and possibly has a crush on?) Wonder Woman. She even has a shrine dedicated to Diana. I think that would be a funny dynamic to bring into the movies.

In addition to that superhero comics are just not that big in Europe as they are in the US. Wonder Woman is just not that well known in a lot of countries. Plus from what I hear from my US friends ... the women in the US may have it a bit worse than most women in Europe. Stuff like maternal leave etc. The women in the US may need her a bit more than we do. ;)

Grace, let's not forget that BvS and Suicide Squad are team-up movies on par with Avengers and Guardians. Wonder Woman is a solo movie and thus should be compared to Man of Steel, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man etc. And you can see this even with budgets where Wonder Woman has the lowest budget for DCEU and has a budget on par with the lowest of MCU's.

I think Wonder Woman did absolutely everything it needed to do and more. In the beginning of the year Industry insiders were predicting a $225M Dom and $550M WW for the movie to be a major success considering the break even point was in the $350M- $450M range. As we all know it blew past everyone expectations and will probably end up at $350M Dom and +$750M WW, that's huge. This is the first outing of a untested IP which as iconic as it was was not really popular or trendy and that not even counting the burden of DCEU this movie had. Those results are fantastic.

WW is doing phenomenal overseas especially if you consider that WW as a comic character has not been that famous overseas in the past 75 years. Still much better results than Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, etc., - solo super hero movies without Batman, Superman or Spiderman who are arguably the best known superheroes internationally
@ramialj2875

Comparing WW to the arguably the first superhero movies before the whole superhero movie crave is just unfair. More people love watching these movies now in the cinemas, more than before for sure.
@alexmiller6644
@alexmiller6644 7 жыл бұрын
Rami Alj are you forgetting how DC/WB hurt their superhero cinematic universe so bad with SS and BvS and a less than impressive MoS. WW followed what has been a major crisis in DCEU. Also, as I said,WW as a character is not that famous internationally - that is simply a fact. Now she's entering the collective consciousness of many new demographics. Think back to b.o predictions for this movie and how it now only overcame them, is now going to be the most successful dc movie in terms of domestic b.o and is the most critically acclaimed superhero movie with the exception of Dark Knight
@alexmiller6644
@alexmiller6644 7 жыл бұрын
Rami Alj also, we are living in a saturation period for super hero movies. To be this critically acclaimed NOW is much more difficult than if WW had come out in the beginning of the renaissance. WW doing better than Superman or Batman at box office in renaissance period is mind-blowing

This movie was backed by so many famous women that praised this movie because of the whole first superhero female led movie so this would break those predicted numbers with or without the history of the DCEU. I liked this movie but I feel like people are overreacting as to how good this movie really is and overlooking the flaws that this movie behold. I watched this movie opening night even when I hated Suicide Squad and only though BvS was ok, and I will continue to watch every DCEU and MCU movie until I die, despite the reviews or history. I'm pretty sure there are more like minded people out there. Iron man and Captain America were not at all that well known when they first hit the screen. As I said before they came out before people started craving superhero movies as much as today, if the MCU started today with Iron man 1 coming out this year, then it would easily earn more than before. Not as much a WW because of the whole, every actress backing WW etc.

Alex Miller That's a lot of bull. Even if the DCEU was damaged by BvS and Suicide Squad (again complete bull). Why would Wonder Woman be doing exceptionally well domestically? Wouldn't it have been damaged by the last 2 DC movies as well? Hell, why did Suicide Squad almost match the earnings of BvS (and in some cases even surpass it in certain markets )? And Wonder Woman is doing fine internationally, but it's not the hottest film out as its competing with other successful franchises and much bigger actors.

Wonder Woman being on course for $700 million at the global box office is an incredible feat. Mind you, no other female-centric/female-helmed film has ever truly lit the global box office on fire: the Hunger Games films were driven by the domestic market and apart from Star Wars Rogue One and the Force Awakens, the masses are only beginning to truly be exposed to female-led blockbusters. Wonder Woman is a great success and it saddens me that in this day and age, women and people of color still have so many hurdles to pass over. When will they ever be good enough? Hopefully it's soon.

How is not doing big numbers? This weekend it will hit 700 million worldwide. Its only been out this month. It still has 4 to 5 weeks left to go in theaters. Suicide Squad to took 2 months to cross $300 million domestic. Wonder Woman took only 4 weeks. Batman v Superman took the same amount of time to make $300 million Domestic as well. But that film also had a higher Opening weekend, and massive drops the next few weeks afterwards. While Wonder Woman opened strong, and has been holding up with fewer dropped weekends to hold itself up. In its 5th weekend Batman v Superman made $308 million, and opened at $166 million Wonder Woman is which hasn't completed its 5th weekend yet is at $318 million, with a $103 million opening. Wonder Woman is looking to have maybe an $800+ million dollar box office

I´m living in Spain (originally from Puerto Rico) where WW finally opened last Friday and I could watch it. And I don´t know the rest of the country but in terms of advertsing in Seville has been pretty bad. For BvS and Suicide Squad you could see posters everywhere. But that´s not the case this time. Sure, you can see them in all newspapers stands (that are a lot and all over) but they´re not placed on bus stops and in regular promoting places as the other 2 movies. I went to see WW with my friend and he really liked. He even said that, if he had known that it was going to be this level of "family entertaintment" he would have brought his little nephew. So I´g going again with him. Still, the movie opened the Night of San Juan where it´s tradition to go to the beach and they take all weekend. So that might have hurt the movie. Still, just opened...we´ll have to wait and see.

I think if you were to compare WW to the other dc movies, it performs less overseas because if 2 things: 1. WW is a largely American brand. She does not have nearly the worldwide appeal that Batman and Superman have. 2. Stylistically I think WW didn't look as FUN of a movie. Suicide Squad is a very colorful and stylized movie, which I think was a huge appeal for it everywhere, and especially in places like China or Japan.

I think part of the issue with the difference between US and foreign box offices is targeted marketing campaigns. The Mummy, for instance, had a MASSIVE push here in the UK, and so when I went to see it second weekend, there were more people in the cinema than there were for Wonder Woman's opening weekend (which had under-screened adverts and none of the cast on the publicity circuit). It seems to be becoming a more common tactic too, particularly with films that look like they'll get a negative US reception.

Yes, it's true that OS markets will make sure TF5 does not lose money. The DOM vs OS divide simply no longer applies in this case. TF5 is being now universally rejected by all important markets, dropping 30% to 60% from TF4 in major markets, the only reason that OW didn't drop that much from TF4 is because of China, however, the trajectory this film has in China is simply terrible. Despite making more in Opening weekend, TF5 will likely end up making 80 to 100M less than TF4 in China, this is significant rejection in a ever expanding market where sequels don't drop in box office. TF5 will make barely 600 M WW, which will be a significant decline from 1100M TF4 made.

I love Wonder Woman, watched twice. I think the reason Wonder Woman isn't doing as well overseas is mostly related to Gal's citizenship. This is coming from someone who lives in a Muslim majority country. There are many Muslims who blatantly reject/boycott this film just because of her citizenship, many of whom would not give a second thought to go watch a super hero themed film. BTW, i am a non-Muslim living in a 'moderate' Muslim majority country.

I'm from a remote overseas country called Romania, I saw WW 3 times: once in IMAX and twice in regular 3D and all the friends that came with me each time loved it, even guys that had little to no idea about the comics or character. I think that a big problem with WW was advertising, they chose to display Gal Gadot as not only front and center but the only face on the poster. I know it's not a team movie but maybe some more images of the supporting cast would have helped a bit. It's a very diverse cast and for instance, a lot of people found Etta Candy really funny and Antiope really badass. I'm not criticizing the movie in any way, it's one of my all time favorites and I was on board with casting Gal Gadot from the beginning but maybe sharing the spotlight a bit would have helped get more people to see WW. Hey I loved Wonder Woman and my screening in North West London was packed! It was on the Saturday of the opening weekend and people loved it but I do think movies are getting way too expensive over here. I watched it at a vue cinema and it was like 12/13 pounds for one adult ticket and only like a pound fifty cheaper for a student ticket so I think most people have stopped going cinema in general and prefer to wait for on demand xx

She beats Mummy in the second week here too, and beats Baywatch, that only opens here in June 15. The numbers of the last weekend are not released yet, but I really think that WW is still #1 because the movie that opens here with more strengh to do so, is The Circle and I know that, unfortunatelly it didn't debut very well. Judging someone's look and spreading negativity from behind your computer or on a phone is not real life. As for actual real life, it can be quite warm and fuzzy if you choose not be surrounded by people who feel entitled to judge everything negatively for no reason, most people are actually nice.

Whatever, I just think your remark was mean and unnecessary. I am definitely not the online justice bringer but I’ll quickly tell you how I feel about all this and then I’ll be done with this conversation. When someone comments “I love your hair”, the recipient either doesn’t care or it makes them happy even if it just puts a smile on their face for half a second. Obviously, you don’t have to agree with the comment, I’m actually not a fan of the hairstyle myself, but you could have just said you liked her everyday style better. But you used words like “horrible” and even said “she looks like she's about to kill someone (or just has)”. Now if Grace or anyone you’d give a similar comment reads your comment, they’re either not going to care or they will be hurt or offended that you feel entitled to give such negative comments, this is what I mean by spreading negativity, and that’s what I believe was not necessary. Call me corny if you want but I choose to only make personal judgment comments when I think it’s going to make the other person feel good, I think a lot of people would feel better if they didn’t receive unrequested hurtful comments either in real life or in the comments section. Now I won’t be hunting you in the comment sections, so feel free to not take anything I said into consideration and keep expressing your opinion the way you do if that’s what you want. Have a nice day, rest of the day, evening, night, wherever you are in the world. Ok, I lied about being quick.

+ Outlaw7502 outside of the US not many people care about "hidden messages" in movies or what it "represents" we look at as it is, a movie, wich is made to entertain so there is not a fever of feminism and people like or dislike the movie based on what they saw and not what they think a movie stands or should stand. Wich is good, nobody is fighting over a movie.

Hi Grace! Question, how do studios decide release dates for movies in different markets? Take for example, Wonder Woman opened in Hong Kong and Taiwan on 30 May, and then opened in a few more countries like Singapore, South Korea on 31 May (interestingly, movies in Singapore would open on Thursdays - and Wonder Woman was initially slated to open here on 1 June before being moved to 31 May, Wednesday about 2 weeks before it was set to open). The movie then got its chunk of openings on 1 and 2 June; but in some countries like Spain and Belgium, the movie literally just opened in the end of June. And surprisingly, Wonder Woman only opens in Japan on 25 August. Wouldn't holding a movie out that long hurt its run at the box office? The hype for the movie would have settled, and there is a greater window for viewers in the markets that open later, to catch the movie online for free. Please enlighten us on the logic of the studio's release strategies! (Ps. I got all the opening dates from IMDB) Love your videos Grace, keep up the great work! From a big fan in Singapore :)

critical praise is a big reason, Ive started to notice a trend since the devastation that was BVS and subsequently SS that American Audiences are more sensitive to critic reviews. mk6rfc1 hmm...maybe it has to do with WW not being this big cgi action movie, like Doctor Strange, Avengers, BvS, etc. WW was rather grounded and tame with the exception of the small boss fight at the end( rather grounded and didn't feature much visual stimulation). Movies that do extremely well overseas tend to be big cgi/action destruction type movies regardless of quality. WW was one of the more grounded superhero movies, and was also a solo superhero movie and not a big team up, those tend to do much better overseas as well.

People overseas go to the movies to unplug, not to think. Which is why franchises like Suicide Squad or Fast and Furious work so great. They have the perfect combo to appeal male audiences who don't really want to see something deep: Gorgeous oversexualized women, guns, explosions and dudes being heroes. Wonder Woman is a superhero movie and yes it has guns and explosions and dudes being heroes BUT it's a deeper movie. It forces you to use your brain and it definitely does not have oversexualized women. So of course domestic audiences who have now become more demanding about content are not going to be as happy as overseas audiences who just want action packed films or pretty women in danger.

WonderWoman is doing bad oversees because she is woman, how many countries in Africa n Asia legit respects women? How many of those countries have women ready to challenge the men for their rights? America on the other hand is beginning to have women come out, so that's a big difference. Don't also underestimate the power of hate, Gal Gadot is Israeli, which means a lot Muslim populated countries don't like her, therefore the movie, talking about North Africa, the entire Middle East, that's a lot of money people.

Why the hell should AMERICAN audiences give a shit about the opinions of Chinese audiences? Wonder Woman is an AMERICAN super hero and the movie should be more for American audiences. Sure you can argue that she's not from America but Paradise Island but she was created by Americans for American comic books for an AMERICAN audience. Just like Superman. Hollyweird use to not give a shit about whether the movie did good overseas but focused more on American audiences and you'll notice the movies were better quality back then and foreign audiences liked them anyway. Now Hollyweird prefers to cater to foreign audience while ignoring the feedback or concerns of American audiences and the quality of the films have dropped!! NOT A COINCIDENCE.
@thereturningshadow
@thereturningshadow 7 жыл бұрын
@Jess Diez Which is why they are putting out more shit than quality films. All they care about is the fast buck. Make a couple hundred million in one month on a shit film instead of a quality film that will make just as much in two months and can last longer in theaters. Movies just don't last as long in theaters as they used to. For example Empire strikes back averages 6 months in theater on a regular run and I know one theater that held it over for ANOTHER 6 months and it still made money. Raiders of the Lost Ark also was in theaters for 6 months. Both quality movies that not only made lots of money but are consider some of the best of all time to this day. Now movie studios prefer to put out a dozen or movies per year and some are just tax write-offs. Some are higher levels of shit and only two or three are good blockbusters. They couldn't care less about audience feedback which would drive what kind of movies they would produce. If people would just wise up and just stop spending money and going to see these shit movies year after year and it hits them in the bank account they might realize.

Question/Commentary: Are overseas numbers driven more by the novelty of Hollywood movies than by actual tastes of foreign viewers? 15 years ago very few foreign markets got to see Hollywood movies in theaters on a wide scale. For example, How the Grinch Stole Christmas was the biggest movie of 2000. It grossed $260M domestically and only $85M worldwide without a significant numbers in China, Japan, South Korea, Russia, etc. It’s easy to forget how new Hollywood blockbuster are to foreign movie goers, and that’s not going to last forever if Hollywood keeps pumping out sub-par quality movies. The day may come when Hollywood depends on the foreign box office to save a movie and the foreign box office won’t be there because they’ve been burned by one too many Michael Bay or Vin Diesel movies.

Okay, this is a serious message and hopefully it'll get read and will shed some light on this situation. First things first: when talking about "overseas" or "international box office" it's important to differentiate between China and the rest of the world, because I can tell you people from Europe do NOT have the same taste as Chinese people and our respective box office numbers are never equivalent. Second: Wonder Woman didn't premiere in Spain until this week, so I didn't get to see it until two days ago. I was so hyped, I was SO excited, I wanted to like it SO much. And, yes, it was a MAJOR disappointment. The movie is full of cliches, FULL of cliches, and it's so incredibly sappy and corny there's no way to take it seriously when they're talking about how love is worth saving humanity and all that jazz. To my European POV, that's TOO SAPPY FOR A GOOD MOVIE. Now, I'm gonna say this once and for all and I don't know how many Europeans follow this channel but most people around me agree: Americans seem to like theatrical and over dramatic storylines and dialogue more than Europeans, I don't think most Europeans can get past the sappiness of it all. Wonder Woman won't be considered a success in Europe, I'm afraid, and you can't imagine how sad that makes me, because like all of you I was rooting for Gal and for Patty and for everything the character of Wonder Woman stands for. The movie though, wasn't good.

I think the problem with Gal Gadot is that she isn't well known..I think people overseas (at least Italy) go to the movies when there's a big movie star that they actually know. In America is different cause you watch all these stars going to interviews and talk shows, but those things don't really reach other countries. That's why in Italy everyone went to see Pirates (Johnny Depp) and the mummy (Tom Cruise) and Suicide squad (Will Smith); they recognize famous actors and are drawn to them. So I guess you could say that even tho' star power isdying in America, in other countries it's still a big reality

I am a bit concerned about your last review owing to you have said that Wonder Woman is grossing enough outside the States. My concern has got to do with the fact that Box office mojo is not updating properly the information overseas. There are several countries , for intance Israel, Croatia, my country Chile (where bvs grossed about $5.000.000. and MoS 2.000.000 and WW is been doing great) so if you count all those countries that don't appear in the list the foreign gross could be a bit bigger. Reasons Wonder Woman is not doing "that well" overseas: 1) Many of my friends hated BvS and Suicide Squad, so they won't be going to see it. 2) The ad campaign was weak. 3) Many people said that they ripped off Captain America's 1st movie, which was a disaster. 4) Wonder Woman came out so late in a lot of places, the online buzz was already down. 5) The third act is not that much better than BvS' last act, which many people (me included) commented on.

+Sharkgirl94 I only agree with you on the first part of the op's comment. The third act was easily the best part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Marvel's third acts aren't that bad at all.
